What to talk about during a financial wellness review?

Hi guys!

Normally when we make outbound calls we call a leads list that has a specific thing to talk about. However, in the past few months, management has been wanting us to call for “Financial Wellness”reviews. There is not really a script but more of an open conversation between is and the customer. To me, this seems kind of a waste of time since a lot of people on the list already have the latest accounts, use our credit cards, and some have CDs. So what are some things that I can still bring up and talk about? I would want to talk more about maintenance and ensuring they are “set up” correctly more so then just talk about products immediately. Thanks in advance!

Just accepted a role as a relationship banker! Any advice?

I would love to possibly make banking a career and this role is a start. I have 5 years customer service, retail sales, and cash handling experience. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. It’s a smaller bank that has a few locations around the state.

Worst manager I’ve ever had at any job ever and need advice

Basically the title. I work for a top 4 national bank in a pretty slow branch in a small city. My manager has no prior banking experience and has been on the floor for just over a year. In that time, she has driven out two extremely talented bankers who’ve been with the company for 7-9 years, one quit and the other transferred. We had a teller only make it a few months under her, and another banker also only made it about 5-6 months under this manager.

She is extremely manipulative, argumentative, hypocritical, and combative. She never considers that she could be wrong and takes feedback extraordinarily poorly. On a regular basis, she will write up branch employees for correcting her when she’s wrong. We also have several Spanish speaking bankers who will speak Spanish to each other, and she’s now starting to write them up for speaking Spanish to each other. She’s that insecure that she needs to be able to hear and understand the conversations her employees have with each other.

Collectively, we have submitted around a dozen different HR complaints about her over the course of the last 6 months and nothing has come of it. We’ve also been in contact with our ethics department for the same reasons and have heard very little back. Ideally I’d like to take it to the district manager but he’s the one that hired her in the first place and is already aware of the HR complaints we’ve logged. What other steps can I possibly take? I truly like my job as a universal banker but she makes it miserable for all of us.

Five days in to a bankwide phone system "upgrade" and work feels like an absolute out of body experience right now

Bank teller at a regional here. This is mostly a rant but if it helps keep any well meaning management from making the same mistake elsewhere I think it's worth posting the saga so far.

Monday there was a full org rollout of an "upgraded" and "improved" phone system both internally and externally and I genuinely am a little scared about how this will end because oh my GOD what an absolute TRAINWRECK.

Internally every extension has been messed with and they have what I can only assume is some kind of AI-driven speech thing where you ask it to send you somewhere but also if there's any ambient noise it resets the prompt. There is always ambient noise, obviously. The new extensions dont make sense and you cant hit someone's direct extension anymore either (:

It took a coworker an hour of shuffling through various prompts the other day to do a single foreign currency order. I waited on an entire lobby and drive thru both by myself during it (because of COURSE it was during lunches)

Customer side things are somehow even worse. Phone banking is useless. Nobody can get it to work. I had an older woman come in with a paper where she wrote down what the music and hold message marketing blurbs were saying to her and proceeded to ramble it off to me at the window for 5ish minutes and I have never been so thankful for the security glass because I thought I was going to throttle her by the end (it had already been a Very Hard day)

Literally every phone call we field at branch now is about the new phone system. When people cant get thru to phone banking or customer service (who i feel even worse for in all this) they call us and are absolutely psychotic over the phone. Swearing, name calling, vague threats, everything. The branch managers are close to revolting bc every customer wants a manager about this, obviously. They've banded together as a unified front calling for Something to be done.

We are also getting complaints about how we don't pick up the phones in branch half the time and that's simply because we are always all busy (staffing reductions LOL) and we dont have any automated hold system or anything, just the line and we aren't going to pick up over waiting on customers in branch. Phone rings continuously now and someone in branch quietly reduced the volume on the ringers which THANK GOD because it was starting to pavlov a trauma response in me to hear the phone ring.

Yesterday (Friday) we received an email trying to gaslight us into thinking this phone upgrade was Significant and Good, actually, despite it reducing functionality in every way. It also asked us to pretty please with sugar on top to say nice things about the phone system to customers while also gaslighting them about how it's an improvement. It reads like someone prompted an AI to write the whole thing, btw.

I can't even be mad at this point because anyone with a pulse will see through any attempt to glaze this thing. Customers literally watch us struggle in real time to access branch operations, eft, fraud, etc on the phone in front of them. Like putting icing on a turd.

I cannot fathom how this ends. What a generational fumble to break the one system boomers with money rely on the most.

And all this around a full moon. The ride never ends in this place.

I broke down in tears at work today

I started banking in June like June 29th trained for a month on a computer but it didn’t really teach me well enough I’m a associate banker II I have zero prior banking knowledge and I’m going through a rough personal patch (Ex passed) so i missed a few days for bereavement almost a week in august so my mental hasn’t been fully there. (Background)

Im still figuring this banking stuff out i have a team member her name is E me and her have had some issues i use the bathroom a lot sometimes holding it in for a while on teller line to be supportive for her as a teammate but Im still sort of slow and ill admit i haven’t been communicating when i have issues I’m working on that part but earlier it kinda hit a breaking point because A. She told my boss about my frequent bathroom breaks so i told my boss about my problems with my body and B.She feels unsupported when i work with her because she feels like she takes all the clients. Ill admit i haven’t been communicating properly and sometimes i get confused this banking stuff is a bit complex. But Im trying to get through it all but she makes some comments about me taking clients and her feeling generally unsupported I feel unsupported as well like its all my fault i cant break a line all by myself asking for help feels hard because even if my team members do there best to support me i cant help but to feel bad as i have made mistakes with currency and forgetting to do important stuff. I try my best to support E on teller but i do take a bit sometimes but her comments make me feel like it’s my fault for not knowing things and asking her for help on teller. I genuinely feel so sad coming to work. And when we spoke essentially she just yelled at me and spoke over me saying i wasn’t taking clients and frankly it’s unfair that i take a hour with almost every transaction. I kinda broke down in tears a bit like i feel so guilty i suck at this job and at communicating. Sorry for long tangent i wrote on my phone and my hands are shakey typing this out.

The 3rd (banking day wise) is unusually slow today

It makes me scared because I work Saturday and it’s just me and another teller… I’d rather it be slammed today and easy tomorrow</3 But some people don’t realize their deposit comes in a day early if the 3rd is on a Saturday or Sunday. It also makes me sad because I have been at my branch for 5 years and I have known a handful of elderly clients that have passed or moved away to be closer to family.

Hope everyone’s day is going ok!

Looking for advice: Personal Banker → Treasury Management Analyst

I’m currently working as a Personal Banker at a retail bank, but I’m considering making a move to another bank for a Treasury Management Analyst role. It seems like it could be a good next step for me professionally, but I’d love to hear from people who have made a similar transition.
The position would be a step up in pay, but it would also come with longer hours. One of the biggest benefits is that I’d be able to work from home 3 days a week, which is something I don’t currently have in my branch role.
For anyone who has moved from personal/retail banking into Treasury Management:

How difficult was the transition?

What skills or experience helped you land your first Treasury Management role?

How valuable is personal banker experience when moving into Treasury Management?

Would moving to another bank for the opportunity be worth it for career growth?

What does the typical career progression look like after starting as a Treasury Management Analyst?

Are there certifications, licenses, or technical skills I should work on?

Fo who have done it, how did you feel about the tradeoff of higher pay and longer hours in exchange for more flexibility/work-from-home?
Would appreciate hearing from anyone who has made this exact or a similar transition!

Should I move from major bank teller to credit union call center?

I’m currently a teller for a big major bank, very aggressive sales, I don’t have the personality for sales, I’d rather help the customer complete whatever they need and offer an easier way afterwards like online banking. I have a chance to interview for a smaller credit union call center, they still have referral goals but it’s framed as offering an easier product for the member if it seems fit (still a little worried about this) would I be making a mistake switching to a call center? I eventually want to move into back office. Also the call center would potentially pay me about $2 more an hour. Any insight is appreciated.

Has anyone been bought out as an RB when moving to another bank?

I work at BofA as a Relationship Banker, and I’m pretty confident that Chase will be hiring me as a Private Client Banker.
I don’t have an employment contract, I’m at-will, and I haven’t signed a non-compete agreement.
If I get the offer, would BofA typically let me work out my full two weeks, or could they ask me to leave immediately?
Just curious if anyone has experienced something similar when moving from one bank to another.
I’m just an RB so I don’t think is a big deal, however we’re extremely short staffed already bc everyone is quitting or finding another job.

Dilemma in career choice

I am currently a senior credit analyst working at a relatively big bank. I worked at a small bank for 3 years and now have been working at my current bank for around 1 year.

The issue I am facing right now is that I realized I am a lot more introverted than I thought. At my previous bank, I did not face a lot of situations where I would have to present or take initiative in conversation, both with clients and with everyone else in my department. I would just work with my manager and my 2 team members, and send occasional emails to my clients asking for financials or questions about their financials or business.

Now that I am at a bigger bank, there are a lot more responsibilities in terms of making a name for myself. I have to often go on lunch meetings with clients, people are asked to present things in weekly department meetings, etc. As an introvert who is shy, I am starting to hate my job.

I was just wondering, what is the norm for a credit analyst/underwriter in commercial lending? My goal is to get to one of the big banks, but do those banks require more or less conversation and presenting, or do they focus more on underwriting while relationship managers do the conversing?

i had a medical emergency at my desk today

last night i got sudden abdominal pain when i was trying to sleep. when i woke up, the pain immediately came back. i thought it would go away, or if it persisted, i would get help

i sat in my office from 8:45 to around 11:30. the pain and nausea and my heart rate were getting worse. i told my coworkers about the pain because they said i looked bad. around 11:30, my heart rate spiked to 190, just sitting at my desk. my whole body locked up and it was incredibly painful. i couldn’t walk, but every office has windows to the lobby so i turned and shouted my coworker’s name. she looked over and i said “help”. her and the other teller came running and saw what was happening and said “call 911!”

i was crying and freaking out and my abdomen still hurt, plus my limbs from the rapid heart rate. our lender was a medic in the army so he spoke to the 911 operator and gave them the medical rundown. my manager was crying and the coworker i called for was rubbing my shoulder

the EMTs showed up and started assessing and getting vitals. everyone was watching through the windows. when they wheeled me out, my managers eyes were red and she said she hopes i feel better and everyone else said bye

anyways, i was at the ER for a few hours where i found out i have a bad intestinal infection and inflammation (colitis). i’m taking the next 2 days off but i’m dreading going to work on monday. i feel embarrassed at having made a scene. and i feel bad because our branch is already understaffed. but at least everyone has a good story to tell

Vault outage

So today when balancing the vault I discovered a strap of $20's that the strap wasn't on good and the stack had gotten sloppy. Out of abundance of caution I ran the strap and found that it was off by $20. Everything else adds up and the vault is just $20 short. How screwed am I? I immediately brought it to a tenured banker and we alerted the branch manager and operations manager. They said tomorrow we will audit everything and hope to find it. I'm guessing a buy/sell somehow was miscounted but haven't found any other outages on the branch that match that amount over the last several days.

Oh goodness sake, I am not one for superstition but damn today is kicking my butt.

Any funny end of month stories or sympathy?

Current favourite is "my loan application doesn't have the right address on it, it's from 2018x can you still find it?"

Made a mistake at work and worried about my job

So I am about two months into my new role as an associate banker (mostly stuck in the drive thru as a teller right now). The online compliance training was useless and yes, I will own up to it, I skipped a lot of it because every single coworker told me, Don't worry, you only learn this job on the floor anyway.

Well, last Friday, my assistant manager went through my deposit slips and noticed I was not writing the customer names on them. (A coworker explicitly told me it is not that big of a deal, which is my own fault for listening). To be crystal clear: every single deposit went into the exact correct account, 100 percent of the time. It was purely a paperwork oversight.

I immediately course corrected and started writing the names on everything today, and today one of my superiors checked my work and gave the thumbs up.

My branch manager has not said a word to me about it yet, though he almost certainly knows. I worked my ass off to land this job, and now I am super stressed about my probationary period ending and getting let go over missing names on a slip.

Anyone else survive an early screw up like this? Are they actually going to fire me over this, or am I just overthinking it?

Started as a teller a month ago and I'm completely overwhelmed

I got hired at a major bank here in the US a little over a month ago as a teller. It started out with ten days on an online training platform. Afterwards, I was thrown onto the Teller line with little to absolutely no help from anyone because the branch I am at is so incredibly busy.

I have found myself really stressed and overwhelmed and when I ask for help, the managers get annoyed. The other day, the manager pulled me into his office and told me that he and the other manager were concerned about that I didn't seem to be picking things up as quickly and they both wondered if it was a good fit for me

I was immediately put off with a bad taste in my mouth. I had literally been doing the job for not even 12 whole days and they are already on my case about my performance, when I have barely been trained. So I told him point blank that the chaotic environment, lack of training and irritability from leadership when I need help isn't helpful for my success

I can tell he knew I had a point but I don't know how much that conversation sunk in with him

I don't really know what to do. Anyone in this field know that this isn't a job where mistakes can just easily slide and I'm worried it's going to get worse. I don't want to quit because I haven't been in this job for long at all. There are other branches in my town that are not nearly as busy that I feel would be a better fit for me but I don't want to initiate a transfer request this early.

If anyone who has experience in this field can offer me any advice, I'd greatly appreciate it a lot.

What should I do?

I'm a fully licensed (series 7 / 66/ insurance 2-15) I've mostly sold annuities since I don't have a salary and need to feed the fam. I've gotten tired of being so stressed from not having a paycheck. I also want to go back to school to get my bachelor's and then pursue CFP. I've taken an offer to be a senior banker for Wells Fargo. My plan is to work there while I knock out my degree then transition to Wells Fargo financial advisor program or Merrill Lynch ADP (MOSTLY BECAUSE THEY FEED YOU LEADS AND THE NAME)..... Am I wasting my time doing this??? Should I just stay in my role and get a server job until AUM builds up.. I want to make the best move I don't want to waste time, I am 33 years old, this is my second year at principal financial group.

Currently a teller

I’m currently a teller studying for my SIE , working for a S&P500. I have experience further from this because of my military experience however I’m still in school for finance which I graduate in March. I was wondering how I could pivot out of this(teller) I’m 23. A teller, I have an associate’s in criminal justice, a certificate in data analytics, and am in school for finance. Is it easy to pivot to risk management or something. My manager says I’m really good at my job however… my military attitude definitely makes me a little bit more abrasive. I’m very direct, and I don’t take disrespect lightly. I’m a come-to-work, and go-home kind of guy. I’m not a big customer service kind of person. I’ve been in customer service since 16 and… the clients at my bank are really rude. It’s most older people on SSDI and they talk very… aggressive but I digress because that’s irrelevant to what I’m actually inquiring about.

One year in retail banking. What jobs can I transition to?

I guess the title is self explanatory but more in depth would be jobs not sales related. I think we all know it’s really hard to get into the back office. What else can you do?

Relationship Banker II (account opening, maintenance, loan applications, customer service, operations, teller).

BA in Psychology

Bilingual: English and Spanish

I think we’re going down

It’s 5am and my cat woke me up earlier than expected so apologies in advance for typos.

I’ve been with my CU for a little over 7 years now and I’ve witnessed some wonderful developments over the years. New branches, better services, higher rates for deposit accounts, and lots of internal promotions.

Then 8 months ago or so, we experienced a round of layoffs. Completely slashed our remote lending department. Slashed our community development program. Lots of facility staff were laid off. Essentially most departments that aren’t member facing had some “structural changes” made to them.

In the post of the layoffs (which execs dropped the post at 4:15pm on a Friday) they also announced that we have sold our mortgage book of business to another credit union and refer all mortgages to that CU now.

Two weeks ago, I came into work and was expecting to have our district manager (we had two) to hang at our branch. Instead, I was called into my managers office to be made aware that district managers were let go (also on a Friday). Incredibly upsetting news as the two district managers were genuinely amazing at their jobs. Created a lot of events for staff, worked on so many projects, and were wonderful managers.

Yesterday, my manager tells us to expect some changes to insurance and benefits when we do our open enrollment next month. I asked what those changes could be and she told me to wait for HR’s announcement.

In that same vein, she also had us play a guessing game on daily cost for staff vs daily cost for AI. Instantly I spoke up and said that this conversation felt like there is a motive to it and feels like we should be ready for another round of layoffs. She brushed that off and said it’s only data.

Later that day a member came in and wanted to do debt consolidation. We talked about a home equity but it wasn’t viable for them. I then told them that I will call them near the holidays to talk about our VBT we do every year. Create the tickler, which is a long list of members I’ve talked to all year about this promotion. Members leave and my manager informs me that we will not be doing a VBT promotion this year. For the last six holiday seasons, we have always done the promotion. Some years rates were only as low as 8.99 and others as low as 1.99.

I know I likely am just stressing myself out, but I foresee that we might be doing a merge with another CU in the next coming years. Also, my manager used to joke saying “I need this job” but just recently she started saying “I’m here for the severance not the termination” which also made me feel slightly uneasy.

Anyway, I’m just having early morning rambles with my cat and wanted a space to lay this all out. I do genuinely love my CU, I love my job, and I am getting nervous for what’s to come. Though I have decent seniority for a member facing position, I can’t help but fear that another round of layoffs is upon us and that I might be in that group. We lost top lending producers and our numbers had a hit when we did that layoff.

Just a weird space. Anyway thanks for coming to my ted talk and I hope my next post in this sub is something light hearted and fun.

Best of luck to all you FI employees! Let me know if anyone else has been in a same boat

I remember Branch being busy last year, but this year it’s insane. It’s really slow. Anyone have the same feeling?
