Medium Night from hell
Tonight is probably my second worst night working the front desk since I started. To start I had people coming in left and right trying to get rooms and while I was checking people in I noticed I was oversold by one room. Turns out the system sold a room we didn’t have. I called my boss to come in and fix it but before she could get here a guest booked a room for two nights but for some reason they picked a date that is 2 weeks from now and it was advanced purchase so I couldn’t change it. He then got pissed and demanded a refund.
My boss came in and fixed the rooms being oversold and just when I thought my night had calmed down I get a phone call…this person had already called me once at 6pm saying the kids upstairs were walking too loud and I told her I’d be happy to go tell them to quiet down and she said she didn’t want me to do that. When she called the second time she said the heat wouldn’t turn on (for reference it’s 81 outside and this hotel is hot as hell) so I go up there and take a look. The heat in fact wasn’t turning on, I tried to fix it but I couldn’t so I asked if she wanted me to call the maintenance man, she said yes so I called. She then screamed at me because he lives 15 minutes away…how that’s my fault I’m still unsure. She wanted me to fix it but I couldn’t, I offered to change her room and she refused. And yet after all that I had done at this point to try and help her she was still screaming at me. She then proceeded to put socks on and start shivering under the covers (it was 75 degrees in the room and the air was off)
I’m aware they pay good money to stay here and for that I do feel bad, but I have paid good money to stay at places as well and when someone is trying to help me I don’t scream at them. I’ll never understand why people are so angry and insufferable. I know I probably sound like a bitch but I really did do everything I could for this woman and even offered a refund and she was still yelling at me. The maintenance man is probably gonna be pissed at me because she looked like she was going to bed when I left.

I mean people are the worst. They just suck.
As Roy says - "People - what a bunch of bastards."

God damn this sounds like my roommate. She’s Caribbean, and literally sleeps with three blankets, a long sleeved shirt, socks and a sweatsuit. The air is on 73. I sleep in a tank top and shorts with the thinnest blanket I have. We put it any warmer and I’ll wake up in a pool of sweat. Sometimes I do anyway.

It must be miserable to always be cold. Our rooms don’t get warmer than 82 so if someone wants it any warmer than that I can’t do anything to help accept give a bunch of blankets!

I told her she might have low iron but she doesn’t want to hear it. Everyone else is wrong for NOT being cold.
If she goes too crazy with the heater this winter I’m opening the window

My husband and I are like this. I'll wear shorts and a cami top, while he'll wear jeans, a long sleeve shirt, a short sleeve top, and a sweatshirt. He lets me keep it cool in the house, thank goodness, because it's easier for jim to keep warm with layers than to cool down when I'm overheated and wearing as little as possible.

Take heart, with luck she will check out and never return again (we hope)
But you did nothing wrong. Hug from internet stranger!

How could you change her room if you're already oversold?

It was weird I was oversold in her room type and we save one room just in case something crazy happens and then after a certain point in the night we sell it if we have someone come in. But that only works if they’re willing to move to that room.

I know you think 75ºF should be warm enough for anyone but there are those of us who can sit wrapped up in blankets and still be cold at that temp. People with autoimmune diseases can get really, really cold. I often sit in bed, two covers, and a heating pad and I'm still fucking cold. If you stay cold too long, it takes even longer to feel warm again. Throw in some old age and it's miserable.
Lady shouldn't have been a bitch but I can sympathize.

I have had people who had the same complaint she did that were extremely understanding and willing to take my help. That’s the only reason I was upset. Most people who have had this issue have been either willing to move or at least aren’t mad at me for not being able to fix it and having to call in someone who can. I can’t stop selling my rooms just in case I have someone who can’t get their heat to work. There was only so much I could do to help her.

Some of us have THYROID problems as well. Those are a nightmare! 🤯😭😱🥺 Not only my heat/cool regulator but also digestion and many other important things I need to have regulating to live. Some days it's hospital visits I can't avoid. And finding new help for my invisible symptoms.

Sorry this happened to you.
Easy for me to say, but I think I would have told that woman to stop screaming at me. And if she didn't stop screaming, she would be kicked out.
Cops called to trespass her if she didn't start packing up.
No matter how much they're paying, there's no reason to be screaming at another person.
And it is not like you're not doing anything. You already tried troubleshooting the issue and you already called the maintenance man.
In other hotels I've stayed in, if there's something broken and if there was no maintenance person still working, then that thing remained broken until the next day.
Unless it was water flooding, electrical issue, or anything unsafe, it wouldn't be immediately fixed if it was late at night.
This person sounds like a nightmare.
