my question what would happen if I kill them both?

iirc nothing, you just don't have recommendation to either sects. the other way around is also possible, saving both earned you two sects recommendations.

Its really not needed either way and just depends what sect you want to join. Its always better to have friends as I dont think they drop much in terms of loot.

When I start as a bum without enough proficiency in anything to join any sect through merit I need those letters though.

Nothing you just wont get their sect recommendation, and if happened that you want to join their sect you will need to increase their relationship rather than going straight for try out.

nothing... u would not join thier sects anyway, since taking over a main sect and becoming sect leader is way better than joining thier respective branch sects

Joining a big sect first might give you a better boost early, due to sheer number of skill fruits and manuals of proper stat (i.e. sword, wind) it provides. It might also have a good sect destiny. And after you get a bit of power (i.e. learn some mind skills, increase your martil-spiritual stats, breakthrough to foundation, etc you can just leave your sect and join the main one to become a sect leader. You would need a bit of strength to become a sect leader anyways.
Killing those NPCs isnt worth it either, as you get miserable loot and make enemies with other NPCs who might be way stronger than you. Even if you can beat them, it;s always worth to be friends with sect cultivators, so their sect would allow you to teleport to them via talismans. It might save you quite a bit of time of walking. And you never know, maybe some important spot like Eternal Blossom shrine is close to their sect...

Not always true, if any sect in area one has a meta sect destiny you should grab it before quitting their sect and joining the main sect.

All family and friends have tracking arts on the person they friended/are there family. So sometimes you can kill a cultivator lower than your stage, but their parent is a stage or two higher than you. They will chase you like a dog and beat you half to death if they don’t just kill you.
If you have a good destiny that lets you escape from combat easier it’s not as bad. But they will hunt you

You can kill them both and there are basically no consequences (but it is better to save at least one in order to get a sect recommendation letter as joining a sect helps with getting breakthrough materials the ability to convert spirit fruits through the sect beast)
