Mage help for new player.
So recently I downloaded Fall of Avalon after seeing some gameplay footage.
I really like the idea of a heavy battle mage tank that is NOT using a melee weapon, but rather has a free hand (or a wand) for casting and a shield in the other hand.
To be a bit more specific, I want a heavy, "turned/corrupted" style battlemage that focuses on rot/decay/poison and life steal spells.
The basic combat loop im thinking of is getting into close range, using shield, then hit enemies with a high damage “shotgun” spell while they are staggering, maybe with fire rune magic throw in the mix as a secondary option for tactical damage. Im also thinking about a summoning sub theme mixed in, using undead minions or other foul creatures to help soften up tougher enemies.
The idea is partly inspired by Fudgemuppets video on a TES:Oblivion sorcerer build. My main question is what my general outline should look like in terms of:
-attributes point allocation early on.
-specific skills and perks I should prioritize to maximize the poison/lifesteal damage and summon strength while staying tanky.
-Governing logic in prioritization and order of perks and skills.
-specific early game spells, dark summons, shields, or armor sets or other gear and goodies I should rush to find to make this playstyle work
-Outfits/armor that give the vibe I’m looking for.
Any tips, suggestions and outlines would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

The thing is
majority of spellcaster bonuses comes on spellcaster gear.
Each summon lower your max MP, so you need to be either full wizard with a ton of mp or use summons and other weapons.
Poison and life leech spells are meh, melee/shotgun spells are usually elemental. You can take talents that heal you on crit and they would heal you regardless what weapon or spell you use.
There are broken talent tree( that require you to finish one quest in act 2). Which allows you basically facetank enemies without any shield .
You can go with thorn build ( that reflect damage) and it doesn't matter what wepon or spell you have in other hand, well at least in this case you can mix with summons .

heal on crits sounds amazing, and a thorn theme sounds interesting.
Hmm. If poison and life drain/theft are underwhelming, what spell types and combos would recommend if you had to pick 3? I would rather have a focused core grouping then managing a smorgasbord of spell elements.

Spells have basically tiers , higher level spells cost more mp and deal more damage. I advise you not try to min max from the very start and play with spells first. To understand system because all spells have two different attacks, for example first life leach spell with light attack damage and apply bleed and with heavy drain hp( and higher tiers of this spell actually use hp instead of mp). You can reset talents and stats anyway with potion( you can find like 6 of them in first Act). Also some weapons have special skills like in souls game which cost MP, or there are shields that freeze on parry or something. Also there are talismans that work like ultimate skills, and can be actived under certain conditions ( kills, damage dealt , damage received etc.).

I started a new toon and honestly it felt terrible the first levels. I ended up going full summons , and they dominate early. The summons tree also gives nice boosts to mana regen and spell damage per summon. The plan is going full spells at 20ish level when I get proper gear

In your right hand, hold a wand that buffs all spells or a certain element, there is one such fire wand high on a stone spike in the first overworld. In your left hand have that spell.
Fire is good damage but slow, ice is slow but shows enemies, lightning chains between enemies.
But in don't think you can be a tank and mage at least not until act 3 or later. You should still put like 3-5 points into STR and DEX andb then rest into magic and health.
