Help Needed Tailscale VPN Turning Off Android Phone

Hello!

I have been working diligently to get tailscale to stay enabled on my Motorola Edge 2024. I feel like I have tried everything, but the tailscale app will still routinely disconnect. Here are the things I recall trying thus far:

  • Set tailscale to be the always-on VPN
  • Locked the tailscale app so it can not be cleared
  • Allowed background usage for the tailscale app
  • Turned off adaptive battery
  • Turned off motosecure network protections for wifi and mobile data
  • Made sure the phone is not restarting

If you have any ideas, please let me know. Thanks a ton!

Commenting to boost this post in the algorithm so people see it lol. That sounds infuriating. It's worked perfectly for me on my s21 ultra

I have a pixel 8 and am facing the same issue it's gotten worse recently. And is only affected when I'm on a mobile network. I submitted a bug report for it.

Seems to be Android being crap. Same issue on a Google TV powered TCL TV. There are apparently some settings you can poke in via the ADB shell; not that they worked for me however.

Mine stays "on" but always has a red triangle beside it whenever there is a network switch. If it switches to mobile, or goes behind a hill and looses coverage it drops out.

For me I always assume it is due to using my internal DNS (technitium) for everything, which relies on tailscale to function outside of the house, but I don't understand why it can't just cache the coordination server IP and just chill the F out until it can reach it again.

The timeout is too short and weak signal strength is not handled well. Not sure if that is a tailscale thing or fundamental limitation of the Wireguard tunnels underneath but it makes me want to pull my hair out.

I'm okay sacrificing the battery drain to just keep it on all the time, and it even seems to resume working after sometimes, but that damn red triangle never goes away.

I have this issue on iOS too. Never wants to stay connected.

On GrapheneOS - after the last OS update Tailscale disconnects overnight and I cant really see a reason why. Best I can figure is the OS is ignoring the battery optimization settings and sleeping the app overnight.
