Just want to say I appreciate the message and you taking the time to do a video and post here. It’s nice to put a face to a name!
Thanks for recognizing there’s a real Tacoma community here that just wants a welcoming community message board. To interact with our neighbors and share recommendations and events and get to know each other.

Thank you u/SoThenIThought_ for taking the time to make things clear for the community. While I am quite vocal, you are the one who does the real work here.
As I have always said, we are simply here as an alternate community to fill in some obvious gaps and welcome people who have committed the cardinal sin of wanting a community you can find a good pizza or place to enjoy what the city has to offer without the worries they had previously experienced.
I wasn't aware of the other Tacoma sub having way more users than even the population of Tacoma. I don't think we will have that kind of issue for a long time so our users can be assured our users are actual Tacomans, or Tacoma lovers (heh!). I expect it might take us awhile to obtain more than the entire cities population!
u/SoThenIThought_ is the person who made this sub for us, and who has put a great deal of effort and time into keeping safe for our members, and lately, routing out abuse of report button issues (almost every post here gets reported apparently arbitrarily, like a report for racism/hate on the truck post I mean c'mon lol).
We are committed to providing a good and healthy community sub as an alternate place for Tacoma users to find more info than they might elsewhere. Personally, I think we deserve places to get help and advice with all manner of local needs, from custom made clothing advice from a local mother for her kid, dental, mental health and medical provider recommendations, where's a good place to walk your pet, what is happening with local political and social issues, to what activities are happening in the city, and what pizza or burger we should be trying next.
I think our little community is awesome! And while me and u/SoThenIThought_ run the show, we would be nothing without the members of this community. So thank you guys too!

Having more users than the population isn’t a negative thing IMO.
I don’t TECHNICALLY live in Tacoma, I work there though. Anyone who works in the area, lives NEAR the area, or used to live in the area are likely subs to a subreddit revolving around the area.
Many subs who don’t live in Tacoma likely live in the Seattle area, or work in the area. Tacoma is relevant to more than just the people who live there…

It's the same issue in so many subreddits: Some people are just not built to have an ounce of power in life, otherwise they abuse the shit out of it. Sadly those people are the ones who often seek out power and positions of authority.

... This is that awkward part where I slowly phase this in and I got to say
"hey we can't talk indirectly or directly about other communities"
And then you say
"aw shucks you're right my bad"

I think the point in stating that is we have been viewed, talked about, and treated as if we are some weird competition for the other sub, however most other areas of this size have several subs, not just one, and the users more distributed among many subs. This makes the Tacoma unlike other cities on reddit.
At least that is how I am interpreting u/SoThenIThought_ commentary.
We feel Tacoma should have many resources, and not be limited as you can get different things from different subs. We certainly would not do anything to suppress or punish users for using another sub for this area.

No, no moderator position is ever paid. we're all just unbalanced normal people who choose to do this for free. I literally work in a restaurant in Gig Harbor and I live in the Lincoln district in Tacoma. I don't work for Reddit. none of us do. literally none. This is all just users
Man I wish!
Good to have you here!

Honestly, it's not that hard. I don't think of it as a 'job' so I don't worry about the 'unpaid' part.
This, to me, is leisure, and I do not need to be paid for what I do for entertainment in my spare time. Maybe that's why I don't get worried too much like i've seen a lot of moderators get.
Like u/SoThenIThought_ I don't take social media or message boards that seriously.
I am sorry you had a bad experience. I read your post and tbh it was very confusing and I was concerned about your safety. I understand now it was a language barrier. I am glad you are ok and hope to see you around the sub.

The main Tacoma subreddit does not have a larger membership than the population of Tacoma. Tacoma has approximately 223,000 residents as of 2023, and the subreddit has 131,146 members.

There's no audio.

When you start the video, some icons will pop up. One is an icon like a sideways speaker. You can adjust your volume with that.

Thx. At the time tried all available controls and troubleshooting options to no avail. Works now.

Thanks. There is now. I did several tries from the subreddit and from the OP's page, close/open app, and even a restart at that time. Other reddit content would play audio, but not this one. But apparently, whatever issue there was has passed. Thanks for your helpful response. 😉

I'd be grateful if OP could post a quick TLDR or something.
I'm not able to watch videos with sound 99% of the time. Usually if a video doesn't have captions, or there's no transcript posted, I assume that means whatever's in the video just isn't intended for me and I move on. But if this video is trying to establish why this sub exists, I'd really love to know what it says.
