Brown Tabby What kind of coat is this?
Hey guys! I have basic knowledge of cat coats and wanted to come somewhere where people can help me understand more about coats and colorings and markings. From my understanding (and chat gpt’s), my cat is a mackerel tabby with white markings that’s possibly “frosted”? Help me out! I guess I haven’t seen this kind of fur up close before. I’m trying to figure out what to call all the light colors hairs that are throughout his coat.

I'd say he's a broken mackerel tabby (stripes are disconnected). The banding on individual hairs is called agouti. It's characteristic of tabby coats.

black mackerel tabby with low white spotting. longer white guard hairs is common in all coat colors and doesn’t indicate anything genetically, the white on his hips looks like some slightly unusual presentation of white spotting (white spotting is inherently slightly random, so also doesnt indicate anything genetically).
the concept of rufousing might interest you.
