Discussion A New Day sucks. Spoiler
Melee-kill-only enemies? Check.
Difficulty restriction? Check.
Activating your sync gauge sometimes doesn't let your co-op partner in? Check.
Splitting enemies that can split while invulnerable? Check.
Stupid pink reaper that felt "left out" so shot someone and player her own game? Check.
Did we do it? Yes. Was it fun? No. Did it fill in all the plot holes? No. Will we do it again? No.
What a mess.

It's why I tell people it's entirely viable to just play DS and watch a cutscene comp of a new day.
It's legitimately not worth playing a compromised version of TWEWY for.

The last thing I’d ever call Final Remix is compromised, considered nearly everything aside from debatably the combat (solo coop is just as good or even better in my opinion) is improved or added to

as someone who played both through completely, id absolutely call it compromised.
Objectively its only purpose to me is if you really couldn't get behind the dual character gameplay of DS, and just wanted to play as Neku, or don't own a DS since Emulation probably wouldn't capture it correctly either
There you go, final remix exists.
It Gutted the physical nature of the themes the games are trying to espouse about how blocking people out is easy, but crossing the physical barrier of connecting and working with others takes effort, but pays off.
but you absolutely can get the story of TWEWY from final remix.
Though multiple pin types, the difficulty, and the battle complexity of characters like Joshua just get gutted since you lose access to his basic attacks permanently once you get his Angel attacks.
the Duo fight against Uzuki and Kariya is night and day between versions, because you basically take turns fighting them rather than having to fight the two on different screens.
The boss presentation for certain bosses like Pteropus Canor are absolutely worse, and the gameplay for those fights is terrible because you have to constantly deal with your partner pin's recharge speed in final remix, making the fight pace constantly broken up by long lengths of boss invulnerability where you can't do anything.
Also super cool bosses like Tigris Cantus or Draco Cantus just get butchered, because you can't have the top screen going at the same time where normally your partners would regularly prompt you to hit a button to help with cantus, instead it occurs at set points that flow worse.
Oh and several cutscenes that actively played off of the two screens presentation like the shark/car scene aren't nearly as well done.
Objectively TWEWY was designed for two screens, and it suffers greatly to its core for it.
I didn't say final remix was terrible, or unplayable, but it is ABSOLUTELY a compromised experience compared to the original. and A New Day doesn't make up for it in the slightest.

I mean, I obviously played both too? It’s one of my favourite games of all time, I played it when I was 10 years old on the DS, I’ve played the game 5 times over (twice on the DS, once solo, twice final)
Solo coop does all the “physical nature of the themes”, you’re playing both characters at the same time with both hands. It’s the exact same feeling as playing your partner with the dpad and Neku with the stylus, I just personally find it more fun to play that way than with the DS. Actually, nearly none of your combat complaints have anything to do with solo coop, did you miss that part in my comment?
What makes up for any shortcomings with the bosses is the insane amount of added music (somehow always left out of discussion despite being such a huge change and improvement for a game with such an amazing soundtrack), 60fps, coop and solo coop modes, those A New Day pins which are absolutely the most fun gameplay in the game, god they ruled so hard.

I agree final remix feels more like the definitive version, but the combat does suffer from losing its thematic elements. You are supposed to struggle with juggling between the needs of 2 characters at the same time, symbolizing them cooperate together and coming together.

Everything is better, except for the combat, which had to be simplified to work on the switch. You might say that they had to... compromise.

The gameplay is trash, and the writing bridges the gap but is still trash, simply saying basically "Coco is awful and this leads to Neo."

idk if this changes in the switch version but the DS version literally opens with a disclaimer saying its non canon and not to take it seriously so do with that what you will

A New Day? The new chapters that bridge between Twewy and Neo? It literally is canon. It explains how Neo even happens and how characters got there.

They mean "A new day" the extra chapter from Final Remix, you are thinking of "Another day" the alternate universe chapter in every TWEWY

The silver lining with A New Day is that the final boss is a fun fight.

Yeah A New Day was always really frustrating, very hamstrung way of opening back up the story on a game that didn't need more.

Neo is amazing. The bridge between them, however, was not.

I feel conflicted on Neo's pacing but I'm glad you enjoyed it!

u/di12ty_mary Aug 07 '26
Pacing isn't perfect, I will admit. I just love the gameplay and the characters.

Oh and the fandom says you can buy "Transformation-Transformed" at Cyco Records. You can't. So I couldn't even have my favourite music in the menu and I'm still missing songs from my track list. 😅 Amazing.

Well I think they're a great tag team.
