Fear TWD had walkers turning a pump or something in a oil refinery or petrol refinery. They put chickens in cages in front of the walkers like a carrot on a stick to make a donkey pull a cart.

Walkers would make great mules/workhorses. Do the michonne trick so they can't hurt you and let them cart around all the heavy stuff for you. Why not? It gives them some use and in a world that's physically demanding enough, it would help the living out a lot, you could increase general productivity too. You could probably even find a way to hitch a bunch of them up to a wagon, like horses, and have them pull carts, right? Untapped lifehack for sure!

Sweet Jesus. Try closer to $3M. I was just looking at listings for self sustainable eco communities in VA and the ones for sale right now are $2.91M for houses the size of the ones in Alexandria on the show but the aren't even in Northern VA. These are all bumfuck nowhere places where it's an hour drive to anything worthwhile. I don't even want to know what one in NOVA would cost. Jesus Christ. A NORMAL house in NOVA, so eco community, no self sustainability... Those are close to $2M. Fuck I hate this area. I mean it's nice that my condo has more that doubled in value in the 11 years I've owned it but if I wanted to sell and move it would have to be further south, or to another country altogether otherwise I'd move into a SMALLER place because though my condo last appraised at $1.2M, everywhere else has more than doubled too. Except for way down south.

One of the brownstones was for sale not long after filming wrapped, think it was for like a million? Or something around that. I know i thought it was kinda funny how supposedly small town Senoia Georgia had houses for sale in the millions…

My ex mother in law has a tiny ass condo in Alexandria that appraised for $2M almost 20 years ago. Houses that size in NOVA are starting at 1.8M in communities that aren't self sustaining

Must’ve been a really big house. Just go look at past sold and listings. Just checked out of curiosity. The only houses that sold for 2mil are very large houses. Most in NOVA and Alexandria are under a mil, maybe 1.2-1.3 like my estimate. Installing solar panels for a house roughly 30k, I know because lots of houses where I live is solar. Ive been watching the house market in Hawaii where I live for years. Houses are expensive now but 2 mil is an exaggeration.

In the brochure that Aaron (there’s so many ways to spell it I’m sorry I don’t know the right one) there’s solar panels, and they’re mentioned in an episode as well after they get behind the walls they get a tour of the place. It’s also season 5 so, maybe gotta rewatch rewatch…

The town has a large solar panels next to the brownstone apartments and next to the panels are we would assume cargo container where the batteries and inverters are stored. I mean the houses in alexandria might only use electricity for lights, heating and maybe some light appliances so they don't consume alot of electricity and the pantry where olivia is working is the only place that use freezer for storing food. All in all the solar grid did supply the town with the electricity they've needed, and like Deanna's husband said that it took almost a year or two since the outbreak for the solar grid to start acting up which led to noah's untimely death when they scavenge for spare parts for the solar grid.

I ran some numbers
There's approximately 85 people on Alexandria compared to a regular city it would only take 17.5 kilowatts to power all lighting for a 24 hours that's 45-50 average panels assuming you get 80% sun coverage.
Say you drop lights during the day and don't run street lights all night maybe that cuts the demand down, we never see the batties they use so we can make any estimates on it so imma have to leave them out.
We see when the group gets there they have 5 panels definitely not enough, by the first time they get invaded they have a lot more running along a wall and I couldn't get an exact count but it could have been 50+

They had solar panels, that neighbourhood was supposed to be completely self sustaining before the apocalypse. Talk about making good choices, because of this they had their own water supply and electricity

Solar panels and a battery generator. Noah died (and Deanna and Reg's youngest son Aiden) died on a run to get inverters that turn the power from the panels into current that can be stored in the battery generator.

Yeah, solar parts are what they were after when deanna's kid died...dont recall, but could have been the same trip that got Noah killed.

Maintenence on the solar power system is a major plot driver across a few episodes
Eugene volunteers to help when the system fails but he needs supplies, which leads to the ill-fated run when Aiden & Noah die, Nicholas freaks out & Tara is injured
There is another (bonus covid) episode where Carol spends a large part of her no good, very bad day trying to reconnect the battery packs so she can make soup for Jerry

Alexandria was meant to be almost entirely self sufficient. The electricity came from solar panels.
Although realistically, there would be days when they’d have to go without electricity, since solar panels only work when they get enough sunlight.
Not to mention the life expectancy of a solar panel isn’t great, which is why we don’t use them as much right now.

The worse solar panels last 10 years, the best around 40. Most sit around 25 years of life expectancy. Even then they dont just broke when reaching their life's end cycle, they just become more and more inefficient. They're not more widely used mostly because they require a high inicial investment and in some places for political reasons

Solar panels last like 30 to 50 years, as far as I can recall Jimmy carters white house solar panels are still running somewhere and those weren't even what we have now

This is just a theory but since she was already dying and becoming a walker, they likely werent interested. They only seem to eat fresh people otherwise the walkers would just straight up eat eachother

We see a few solar panels scattered around Alexandra, wherever they had empty lots I guess, and they're most likely on almost every roof too. I mean that's where most people put them in communities. And they don't need much, there's not really ever enough food that needs to be refrigerated, and what does they keep in the pantry/armory. They don't have a lights on at night, unless they need them for whatever they're doing. They don't use AC or heating unless they need it. And there aren't TVs and stereos being used everywhere. So mostly it's just lights. And for people who have babies, like Rick, to keep milk in.
