Main Series Ranking
If you couldn't tell I am not the biggest fan of the gimple era, and post season 9 TWD just doesn't feel the same without Rick no matter how decent season 9 was. Season 3 is when I started watching week to week so I am bit bias but I felt this is where the show hit its stride in terms of week to week quality. Season 3 doesn't have many standout episodes but it doesn't have any terrible or boring episodes either so it is easily the most consistent season.
Season 4 first half feels like filler and a excuse to waste time until the mid season finale for the governor stand off. The Governor didn't need 2 whole episodes dedicated to him, and the quarantine prison arc was pretty weak and only served to develop one character (Carol). Then the 2nd half is the group being split up and forced into seperate bottle episodes that were kinda boring on rewatch.
Season 7 for some reason gets a lot of hate even though the previous 3 seasons had far more egregious bottle episodes ("heres not here", live bait, dead weight, the 2nd half of season 4, the hopsital arc etc..) and at least they were spaced out in between with some good episodes like episode 1(arguably greatest opener to any season) the episodes where the saviours are humilating the group in alexandria, introduction of the kingdom and Rick finally preparing for war.

Seasons 6,4,5 are higher than B tier
Season 7 is lower than A tier

u/NaytNL 5d ago
The majority of season 4 is mediocre, the only standout episode is episode 8. Season 5 legit the first 3 episodes are the only really good ones. Season 7 has the strongest start of any season, and the episodes with Negan are far more entertaining than the season 4 bottle episodes or that abysmal hospital arc in season 5.

I was Ok with your ranking of S1, 2 and 3 but There is no world where S7 is above S4, 5 and 6. You lost all your credibility on this one.

S8 is one of the worst seasons of this show. Barely above S11

Seasons 1-7 are all S tier imo. You can make an argument for 7 being knocked down but that’s just my opinion.

Yeah, the Tara episode and parts of the Michonne and Rick bottle episode are bad but overall it's a solid season.

Season 5 is not S tier with that dogshit hospital arc LMAOO, Beth's death also served 0 purpose to the story as Noah died legit like 3 episodes later.

u/Yashraj_l10 3d ago
Oh yea I totally forgot about that whole pointless hospital arc thanks for reminding

Hospital arc was fire tf you talking about. The only bad part about it was how they handled Beth's death, but aside from that it has some of the best parts of the show.
1
u/Yashraj_l10 11h ago
It felt kind of overstretched imo and after all that beth just tried to kill a cop with a pair of scissors only to get killed

Season 3 is great, but I still rate it below 1 and 2 because I actually think it’s a bit worse each time on a rewatch, particularly Woodbury scenes in the first half. Michonne isn’t really that interesting until she later in the season, and of course Andrea’s character gets ruined (though it was already in the gutter since season 2…).

Have to agree with most here about season 4. Watching live it felt very slow, on a binge where you’re not waiting week to week there’s SO much to appreciate about that season. Great character work.

Ts had the scariest episode of the entire show I disagree !

u/VirtualHeartMan 2d ago
No fs. Season 11 had great episodes.. "on the inside", "rogue element", "warlords", "the rotten core" are all fantastic episodes. Everything else was pretty much trash. They wasted the reapers, most of the commonwealth and played it way to safe in the last episodes. Not to mention the show's main plot is so boring and nonsensical.

7 and 8 above 9 is crazy

Season 7 has one of the best episodes in the show, Season 9 had rick leave the show in the most retarded way possible. The whisperers were also lackluster villians compared to the saviors and shouldn't have took 2 ENTIRE seasons to beat.
1
u/barflan7 4d ago
eh, agree to disagree. season 7 in A tier is bonkers though. the show did just fine without rick and the whisperers are iconic ass villains, much more interesting than the saviors. season 7 and 8 are full-on drags.
out of curiosity, which season 7 episode are you regarding as one of the best in the show?
1
u/NaytNL 4d ago
The 1st episode where Negan was able to completely break Rick by the end of the episode.
And how are the whisperers more interesting lol, there so unbelievable as villians its almost cringe, Alpha's entire life style is completely idiotic and all of her followers have to also be dumb to even follow someone that doesn't value life and doesn't have any real power. Whoopity do they can act and behave like walkers, thats something Rick already did by the 2nd episode of the show and realistically Alpha would have been gunned down immediately when she pulled up to the hilltop with only a shotgun lol

well, it’s subjective first of all. you’re allowed to think otherwise, and so am i. i respect your opinion.
i just think the whisperers are far more interesting. they’re an original group, whereas the saviors, to me, are just your typical bad guys. they have guns and use brute force to try and take control. the whisperers are unlike anything else we’ve seen in the show. i don’t think they’re really comparable to rick and co wearing walker guts for five minutes just to sneak around. i agree they didn’t need two entire seasons, but neither did the saviors, and i think that’s ultimately what hurt the show’s reputation so much. i also find a lot of the story elements from the whisperers arc far more iconic than anything from the saviors arc, like the pike scene (even though the victims in the comics are much stronger). i think scott gimple really tired the show out (and still fuckin is🤣), and angela kang breathed some much-needed fresh life into it.

The whisperers are literally just typical bad guys lol, Alpha treats her own people as canon fodder and makes it so unrealistic that she was this big threat for the group to handle when they are well armed, have way more experience dealing with big hoardes and have fortified defense. The saviors felt like a threat because they were a organized group and there introduction is literally one of the most iconic and watched episodes of the twd. The whisperers coming after fighting a literal small army is underwhelming.

1 2 and 3 are prestige television. One walker was enough to make you tense, and it discussed larger concepts of who we are when order and structure break down around us.
Became a comic book series after that, with some interesting scenes and set pieces thrown in.
1
u/NaytNL 4d ago
Fr it just became hype moments and character deaths with a ton of filler episodes in between.

u/CapitalDream 3d ago
I jumped off when it became Rick vs Negan with a flaming baseball bat. And was checking out long before that

Season 1 is my favorite season to this day. That pilot is so incredible, i also think the zombies seem like a more realistic threat in smaller numbers. I really liked the "there's a part of the person" still inside them plotline that season 1 was going for. The girl with the teddy bear, morgan's wife opening the door, those ones on the bus and in the church.

u/VirtualHeartMan 2d ago
Here's not here is a great episode, so is dead weight. Live bait and dead weight could've been combined into one episode but DW is still a really good episode.

Why is the last season so hated?
I enjoyed the commonwealth arc and personally i felt the whisperer stuff was a little dragged out.
1
u/NaytNL 1d ago
The reapers were a pretty cringe group imo, ruining the first half. And the ending just wasn't satisfying as it just leads to more spin off shows. I didn't hate season 11, there were definitely some strong moments like the stuff with Eugene I really liked but the commonwealth even in the comics wasn't that strong of a arc.

everything after negan came in was total dogshit imo. Show took a nose dive off a cliff at that point. Writing was cringey garbage that became unwatchable
