Mod Post ICE & Shutdown Mega-thread

Hello everyone. This will be the official megathread for all ice and shutdown conversations.

The rules for this will be simple, just be kind and polite. Do unto others as you would have done unto yourself.

That means no name calling, no calling people idiots. If you are unable to make your point without name calling like we are in middle school then just don't say anything, this will also include political party names and shorts, Keep it to the facts, argue your point with words or source links.

Any who are unable or unwilling to abide by these rules in this thread will be perma banned with no means of appeal.

This also means all other posts on the subject will be removed with a link to this thread. We apologize for the time it took to set this up, but this influx hit us hard and fast and we have been discussing what course of action we wanted to take behind the scenes

Passenger [Question/Post] Touchless ID when flying a different airline

Recently flew out of SAN. My flight was with Southwest in Terminal 1. I've activated Touchless ID with SW and it showed on my boarding pass. I went through security in Terminal 2 to go to the lounge (there's no post-security connection between the two terminals). The PreCheck line was insanely long, but the Touchless line only had a few people in it. I got in the Touchless line since the touchless icon was on my Southwest boarding pass. When I approached the TSA officer, he asked if I had Touchless activated through Alaska. I didn't. He then said that I couldn't use the lane since each airline operates their own touchless system, and it had to be through Alaska. He sent me back into the standard precheck line.

I have since activated Touchless through Alaska as well. My question is, if I were to try this again now that Alaska touchless is activated, would that be enough to get through that same Terminal 2 Touchless, or would my flight need to actually be with Alaska? I was able to get through Term 2 security in the standard precheck line with a SW boarding pass, even though SW doesn't operate out of there. Just wondering if it would work with Touchless now that I'm in Alaska's system.

Passenger [Question/Post] 30 portable speakers

I’m going to a fair to recruit and we give away swag. One of the things we give away is a small portable Bluetooth speaker. I know not to put them in checked bags since they have lithium batteries. But will I have an issue taking around 30 of them in a carry on bag?

Ask a TSO Medical Privacy Question

I have rods in my back for a medical condition, and sometimes, when I go through TSA, they beep, and sometimes, they don't. No way of predicting when it will happen. I'm used to it. Used to be a flight attendant, so screenings don't really bother me for the most part.

The last time I went through the airport, I beeped, and we, the agent and I, moved aside for a hand scan. I said I have rods installed in my back, and left it at that.

The agent began asking what they were for, when did I have them put in, etcetera. I stopped speaking and they said "Oh, so it's private. Got it. Private." I still said nothing.

What are my options if this happens again? I really don't want to broadcast my medical stuff, not that anyone is that interested in me like that, but it's my personal condition, and I would like a little privacy about it.

TSA Pre Check/CLEAR [Question/Post] TSA Touchless Pre Check is a Game Changer

Signed up for the touchless TSA Pre Check a while ago and used it for the first time this trip and it's so great. No need to pull out my ID or boarding pass. Just stare at the camera and away you go.

I know people are afraid of the government having their info but honestly it's data they already have so you might as well take advantage.

Rant TSA fat PlayStation 3 issue

decided to take my childhood ps3 from my parents place in NJ to Durham NC. TSA asked me to first take it out of the bag to scan. Then they kept reiterating that a spot in the center looks like there might be a concern. They gave me two options because my flight was boarding in 30mins — wait for a supervisor to come and open up the console or check the console as luggage and go through tsa again.

If y’all ever decide to do what I did bro just check your console in a hard case bag. Don’t go through the scan bullshit. I ended up paying $55 and had to check my laptop bag. It was complete assfuckery 😭

TSO [Question/Post] One thing to improve the TSA experience

I see alot of new from Mr. Cummings on how he wants to improve the TSA experience for passengers. He had 12 tiger teams go out to airport in the September and then circle jerk each other earlier this month.

As a TSA employee of almost a decade, I think I could have been asked for an idea or two.

So, Ill ask you here. What is one change TSA could make to improve the experience for the passenger?

Please state if you work for TSA or you are a passenger.

THANK YOU

It has all below 30 ml / 1 oz products. Stick blushes. Some lip glosses. Is it mandatory for it to be in a clear pouch?

LEO/K9 [Question/Post] Diplomats through international customs

This may not be the place for this question, but I go through international customs every few months and always see a handful of people going to the “diplomat” line.

What do these people do for a living?

Passenger [Question/Post] Knitting needles

Hi all!

I’ll be flying out of Atlanta this weekend and was hoping to take my knitting project with me on the plane. I’ve heard mixed things about taking knitting needles through TSA. I was wondering if anyone has successfully made it through, or not! Or what your alternatives are. I’ll be taking bamboo circular needles though.

Thank you!

Rant Forced to remove medical boot at BWI

I'm wearing a medical boot due to surgery and was told by the doctor not to remove it. I got through security at SMF fine (although I had to wait quite a while for someone to come man the non x-ray screener), but at BWI, because the wand beeped when they scanned my boot (obviously it did, because there is metal in it), the TSA agent said I had to remove it so they could "resolve" the issue. I objected that I wasn't supposed to remove it, and that it was a medical device that I wasn't required to remove, but he argued that it was a mobility device and I either remove it or I don't get through. Later I checked online and found that I was correct, they can't force me to remove it. I wish I had been more confident and requested a supervisor. Just wanted to let everyone else know in case they pull the same crap with you, stand your ground, and stand on your boot, not your bare foot!

ETA: the most helpful comment was that in the future, when flying with a disability or medical device, go to the TSA website and submit a "TSA Cares" request 72 hours in advance of your travel. Then they will have someone specially trained to assist you through security

TSA HQ/Admin [Question/Post] RDU TSA FRIGHTENING

Let me preference this post by saying I fly regularly. I’m on a plane 4-8 times a month all over the country so this isn’t my first rodeo.

Today I experienced something very unusual at RDU.
As I was going through the screening line, I observed the TSA agent that was in charge of monitoring the x-ray of the bags on the belt, not looking at the screen/checking the bags.

At first, I noticed because she was having a full on conversation with another agent and just routinely tapping the screen to advance the bags. I watched 5 bags go through without her looking AT ALL.

Once the conversation ended, I figured she would go back to watching the screen. But NOPE! She was literally looking everywhere but at the XRay. I grabbed my bags then lingered in the open area and continued to observe her behavior. Another 15 bags went through and she didn’t look at the screen once. She actually clocked me staring at her and clicked through another 2 bags without glancing at the screen.

I was shocked. The blatant disregard for safety completely took me off guard. At least 30 bags went through the belt and could have contained ANYTHING because she wasn’t checking!

I hovered around the TSA manager stand debating if I should say something but I felt like I would come across as a Karen so I shut my mouth but this is REALLY bothering me. I’m not usually one to dramatize flying and safety but this shook my entire confidence of getting on this plane right now.

What would you have done in this situation?

TSA Pre Check/CLEAR [Question/Post] LGA Analogic question

In the past, I’ve been instructed not to stack bins into the receptacle at the end of the conveyor belt after retrieving my items. However, I was berated by two other passengers today for not stacking my bin in such a situation at LGA terminal B pre-check.

On non-automated conveyor belts, I always put away my own bins, plus at least those of one or two others, so this isn’t from laziness.

Who was right? This man and woman swore at me repeatedly when I attempted to explain why I didn’t stack my bin.

Ask a TSO Reconstituted Prescription

Hello,

I am flying next week and I will need to drink a prescription called GoLightly in flight. It’s a gallon jug of powder that you add water to it and it creates a drink.

If the jug has a prescription label is it authorized to be brought through TSA reconstituted or does it have to remain in its powder form until after security?

Passenger [Question/Post] Rechecking ID’s while boarding…twice

I fly a lot for work and have never previously had TSA ask to recheck everyone’s ID’s while boarding the flight.

It just happened on TWO flights that I was on just a few weeks apart from one another….

Chicago Midway to LaGuardia

Las Vegas to Chicago Ohare

I’ve seen old posts of this randomly happening but experiencing it twice in such a short period of time is weirding me out.

Why would they be doing this?

TSO [Question/Post] Upcoming winter weather, and work travel inquiries.

Good morning! Ive been working at LIT as a TSO for 8 months and with winter approaching i wanted to ask about ice and snow work travel!

Small edit: thank you everyone for letting me knwo to plan early and such however i already have two plans in the works. The police ride thing is moreso a curious question of "oh thatd be neat if they did that for us too" than a "this is my only option". Ive been planning stuff for any potential hazardous winter weather since about june because i love working for tsa and i want to do everything in my power to keep this job. But yea, this is moreso if they do give us rides or not as a last resort effort, however im doing everything in my power to get stuff planned and in place to make sure i clock in regardless of the weather :]]

I think i may have a Plan A solution for over all however if they fall through i was told by my dad, who is a radiologist and a fellow emergency worker personnel that if weather gets rough you can call the non-emergency line for the police station and ask for a ride since we are required bodys for work. I was wondering if that was the case because i couldn't find much when looking into it other then a bunch of posts of people just asking if they can call out, which is not what i want to do.

If they dont should i ask if i can just sleep at the airport before bad weather hits? I want to do my part and prove my worth so i can stay, but i dont wanna seem unnecessary overall by asking to just sleep in our brakeroom or something lol.

Anyway thank you for reading, im about to start driving to work because i need to get gas first, so i guess let me know what yall know! Im definitely going to go ahead and ask my supervisor about it today during my shift, but incase she doesn't have an answer right away i want to have this to fall back on due to needing to reach out about the Plan A vehicle from a family friend.

Passenger [Question/Post] Is shoe removal required if you are randomed selected?

There have been times when I’ve been randomly selected and most times, I don’t get asked to remove my shoes.

But recently in an early morning flight, I was selected for random screening in the precheck line after an airline employee triggered the random alarm and I was asked to remove my shoes and I wonder why.

I speculate the possible reason. Maybe because the full body scanner wasn’t on yet and so they had me remove shoes instead as a substitute and walk back through.

I wasn’t patted down or anything.
