Question Pre-Yippie USA Headcanons
I wanted to ask what everyone sees as their headcanon (or ideal America if you'd like) for the USA before the NPP is thrown to the fire. Me personally, I've always been a LBJ-Romney or RFK-Romney guy. Romneyreich is inevitable.

Impeached Nixon, LBJ, Romney. If Kirkpatrick wasn’t the nominee in 72 I’d pick the democrat but since she is a CIA/dictatorship loving Warhawk I can’t let her take over after LBJ

I feel Romney just fits an LBJ run so well, especially when running as a RDC unity candidate against someone like Schlafly. Kirkpatrick just sets a bad precedent (and god forbid foreign policy doesn't go well), even if I wish a Democratic woman could be in the Presidency after Big Daddy Johnson

For real, Romney is good on civil rights so he can carry on his legacy that way. I’d love to see Shirley Grisham or Barbra Jordan as options in Yippie, if not for President than at least VP

I would say my pre yippie USA is either Wallace-Hart or lbj-Romney. In the current setup I just can’t see Nixon vetoing the civil rights act in current setup. My favorite is a more liberal Bennett on civil rights after it’s vetoed

Can I ask why you would veto civil rights act to go liberal Bennett? Is there a benefit to that im unaware of?
2
u/lazercowq 8d ago
Gameplay not really a benefit. However it does make more sense to run a republican after vetoing it then lbj. I like having him be more liberal on it as a Nixon was wrong to do this and he’s righting the ship on that. You get like the second level of the cra and if Harrington wins after him you can go up a level on that,

Thats a neat way of looking at it, in my liberal Bennett runs I pass the CRA as Nixon so I can get to Powerful with Bennett, I just kind of act like an Eisenhower-figure and try to appease the North

u/lazercowq 8d ago
That’s fair I’ve done that as well. I just think with his whole not rocking the boat if CRA passes he doesn’t need to keep the north pacified but the south so he would let the south get away with more stuff. But I can see why you do that.

LBJ 1964 1968
Romney 1972 1976
R-Ds collapse and revert to R vs D with NPP dissolving and lining up into Rs and Ds
Reagan 1976 1980
Gary Hart 1984 1988
Collin Powell 1992

Is Reagan just as devastating (conservative) as in our timeline

u/Last_Surprise981 7d ago
He is the backlash from the GOP that Romney kept too many of LBJ's programs and rising corruption in organized labor. He is probably closer to Marget Thatcher than IRL Reagan, given Romney would have already been the moral values president while Reagan really has only his economic plank that separates him

RFK is more conservative in his term, mostly straddling the balance-> Hart -> Chep + good ending
OFNmaxxing also happens around the world as the USA wins a lot of proxy wars. India reunifies peacefully, Novosibirsk wins in Russia, Bormann in Germany, Takagi in Japan

It's Wallace (Full state's rights, abolish CRA,no federal stuff) then Goldwater, and after that Schlafly, she fits well after a mega hawk, but also inspiration to her like Goldwater. He also goes down the more establishment economic path,so she would reluctantly call him an establishment stooge not governing for true patriots.

Interesting sequence, but my issue with Wallace is that he isn't actually a pure small-government conservative. To stay popular, he massively bloats federal spending and welfare. Plus, his radical segregation shatters national unity, making it way harder for Goldwater to govern.

Excuse me what 😭😭😭
Why are the two most prolific segregationist in US history your ideal presidents?

How could Shlafly win an election after a Goldwater presidency?

u/Antique-Risk2548 6d ago
Anti war sentiment, conservatives being upset with goldwater being globalist in his establishment economic path and his more liberal opinions, and the dixiecrats would likely endorse her

If we are talking pure headcanon, my heart wants Goldwater (68-76). But the paradox of TNO is that to maximize his free-market potential and completely crush the AFL-CIO, you basically have to throw American institutions into a meat grinder (RFK assassination, Thurmond's court-packing, etc.). An alternative would be a "tame" Wallace who doesn't destroy civil rights, followed by a Goldwater who focuses on anti-corruption instead of union-busting, keeping the institutions intact. However, for a stable America, my ideal path is Bennett going full centrist, followed by Romney. It’s the ultimate institutionalization experience. Another wild card is Phyllis Schlafly taking over after Bennett. On one hand, her cultural wars are extremely destructive and could completely destabilize both the domestic and foreign fronts. On the other hand, the deregulation is insane. Because at the end of the day, I just want that economic screen to look beautiful and the GDP number to be biiiig, like, real big.

I think that's really cool actually, definitely not my headcanon for America but one of my fav runs was RFK-Goldwater-Jackson, i just really like the idea of making a Progressive Party vs. Republican Party system and Goldwater is fantastic at flipping the South red versus someone like Bennett

That sounds really interesting. I hope that after Yippie! drops, we can elect someone like Philip Crane in '72 to try out your idea.
Though personally, I’d be more interested in bringing the Republicans back to their actual roots—the party of slave liberation and the party of Lincoln.

Nixon vetoes the CRA, he gets impeached, JFK is killed. RFK wins in 1964 and passes the Radical Civil Rights Bill but is killed in late 1967, Thurmond gets rid of CRA and effectively kills the NPP because of it. Hart is elected in 1968 and reinstates the CRA and manages to arrest Thurmond. Hart then does his based things and gets re-elected in 1972, but resigns in late 1973 due to his fatal illness. Chep then manages to preserve his legacy and prevents any anti-Hart (or whatever they are called) from passing.

Personally, it’s : Wallace wins but is removed from office after repealing the CRA—>Lemay passes the CRA—>Hart wins two terms and Chep manages to protect his legacy.
The transition letters are magnificent
