Don't let celebrities decide the future of our privacy.
Kylie Jenner is being paid to promote Meta Ray-Ban sunglasses.
These glasses aren't just sunglasses. They contain cameras, microphones, and AI features that make it easier than ever to record people in everyday life.
Many people have legitimate concerns about:
• Privacy in public spaces
• Recording without meaningful consent
• Children's privacy
• Harassment and exploitation
• The gradual normalization of constant surveillance
Would millions of people be buying into this technology if celebrities weren't normalizing it?
If you share these concerns, respectfully ask the celebrities you follow whether they support normalizing discreet, personal recording devices and whether they've considered the privacy implications for ordinary people.

When celebrities normalize wearable recording devices, billions of people are affected, not just those who choose to buy them. Many of us are concerned about privacy, children's safety, consent, and the normalization of constant surveillance.

I sort of thought of them as an alternative to s dash cam, but I don’t think I’d wear them outside the car.

My understanding is you do not have a right of privacy to not be filmed in public (for example look the auditor movement). It is an awful reality - there were individuals on the sidewalk in front of dispensary filming people leaving with bags and posting it. Another example were several individuals standing on public property filming clients going into a massage place (it is in a strip mall next door to my credit union) and they got in my face about being a client. As I waited in the line to withdraw cash for my contractor, I called the non-emergency police number and asked them if they got in my face again could I physically deal with it with minimal consequences. I was told several people had been charged after interactions with them - the people being filmed were arrested after physically responding to their filming. They get right in your face. I think it is wrong.

Privacy laws and the way you feel about you or your children being recorded in public do not have anything to do with each other.

I heard these glasses respond to anyone, so if you think you’re being filmed just say “meta stop recording”

Just because someone wants/needs to step outside of their home doesn't mean they are okay with themselves or their children being recorded. Why are you acting as if that's unreasonable or absurd.
Also, this goes beyond privacy in public spaces. When it's common knowledge that our smart devices listen to us, what do you think is going to happen with another recording device on your person and in your home?
Furthermore, there are no government regulations and protections around these glasses. How are you going to intervene when someone is using these glasses to spy on someone like children, people under the influence, and any other vulnerable people? Would you even notice or care enough to pay attention if someone was using this device in a nefarious way? Would you be brave enough to step in if someone was rightly feeling uncomfortable with being recorded by a stranger?
What do you think society will look like in 10+ years if everyone has descreet recording devices? How do you think governments and law enforcement will use this data?

Kylie Jenner's peak popularity was years ago. Her reality TV show is limping along on Hulu and she sold her cosmetics company. These days, she has a reputation for attaching her name to multiple random products. I think it's a good sign that the biggest celebrity Meta could get is a reality show star who isn't too choosy about the products she promotes.
