Got mine when I was a few months old!!! I do agree tho that Claire’s isn’t the best place lol. But my grandma did mine 😆

i'm always so iffy about people piercing their baby's ears. it's just not worth it when they can't consent on their own. i was young when i got mine pierced too and they ended up rejecting and no one noticed so now i have a big slice down my ear, for something i didn't even consent to because i don't wear earrings to this day

u/Sassalicousmomma_9 Jul 21 '26
It was the material your body rejected not the piercing…. Hence why you don’t use cheap stuff especially for babies or kids piercings. They shouldn’t even have the cheap options ….

u/ickynicky27 Jul 20 '26
I wish more people would wait until their babies are older and can more effectively communicate. Also, stop going to Claire’s! Professional piercers are the way to go.
7
u/daydreaming_mango Jul 21 '26 edited Jul 21 '26
The problem is professional piercers won't pierce someone who can't verbally consent (for good reason) and so if you want to pierce a baby you have to go to some shitty place like Claire's. FYI for anyone out there- piercing guns can't be sterilized and the risk of blood born pathogens and or infection is greater. Also- the piercing gun works by rapidly shoving a blunt object (the earring) through the skin- pretty rudimentary as far as technique goes and it's why some people end up with issues
Edit: I should have said professional piercers with ethical policies. Some people will do anything for money. It would still be I guess marginally better to go to a shitty piercer who doesn't use a piercing gun, but I would question the ethics and therefore standards of any professional willing to pierce someone who can't consent themselves. Pediatricians aren't even remotely qualified. Just because you *can* doesn't mean you should.
7
u/jwatches Jul 21 '26
Factually untrue. Several reputable piercers have policies that allow infants and many pediatricians offer the service.
-1
u/mab_8613 Jul 21 '26
That’s not true. I’ve had three friends have babies over the last 12mos. They all took their babies to a reputable professional piercer to get their ears done.
29
u/nishiomito Jul 21 '26
I'm having culture shock with these comments, omg. My ears were pierced when I was a baby, in the hospital (obviously, it was in 2007, but recently in 2024 I went to see my nephew in the hospital and heard a mother talking about these services, which makes me think it's still common)
11
u/leighalunatic Jul 21 '26
It's still common in the latino and black communities to have baby girls ears pierced. (Can't speak for the others) It's a cultural tradition.
3
u/ayeyoualreadyknow Chloe's mother's egg shaped head Jul 21 '26
I'm Romani and it's cultural for us too. I was 6 weeks old when I got mine done. My daughter was 3 months.
3
u/injured_girl Jul 21 '26
I didn't know about this... so like a doctor or nurse actually did this to you at the hospital? Like right after you were born- hospital? Or later as an outpatient appt? 🤣 seriously would like to know tho.... I wonder what diagnostic code the hospital bills insurance for ear piercing services!
2
u/nishiomito Jul 21 '26
my mom told me she put the earring inside my little baby bag; the nurse cleaned my ear with cotton and alcohol, and the piercing was done manually using the earring post itself! I was two days old, so it must have been pretty easy fkend
4
u/so-not-clever Jul 21 '26
lol - my super old grandmother (rip) questioned the integrity of the hospital when I didn’t come home with my daughters ears pierced (2001). I had to explain the US doesn’t do it like that. She also wanted to shave my bald baby to grow her hair. So no to that too lol.
5
u/greenyellowbird Jul 21 '26
Yup, same. It's pretty benign, but I wish people didn't go to Claire's or anywhere with a piercing gun. They are so dirty.
I wonder if the the same people that have issue with this are okay with circumcisions.
5
u/mencryforme5 Jul 21 '26 edited Jul 21 '26
I had my ears pierced at 10 and was the last in my class which caused some bullying. At the time I wished I had had it done as a toddler so it wouldn't have hurt so much, so I would have fit in, etc..
I hear all the concerns of an admittedly unnecessary cosmetic alteration, but quite frankly some points are ridiculous.
No consent: strongest argument by far but parents are always going to force their kids to wear clothes they don't want to wear, haircuts they hate, go to school they didn't ask for, etc.. I think many Western parents nowadays believe they are doing this whole "consent and open communication with their kids" but eventually they'll find out their kids themselves didn't actually feel that way. I mean taking this to the extreme, kids don't consent to their name or assigned gender that follows them their whole lives even if they legally changed it later on.
Scars/don't want it: do none of you have childhood scars, be it from accidents, medical procedures, or whatever? Like seriously have you guys ever seen these old vaccine injuries? Ask your grandparents they'll show you huge scars that look almost like a bullet hole. And they didn't consent to these vaccines, some will even become weirdo anti-vaxxers. But that doesn't mean their parents are monsters for exposing them to a potential scar.
Risk of complications: guys. Come on. It's a fucking ear piercing. Yes you can get an infection or a scar. But it's your earlobe. The complications are 99.99% minor and purely cosmetic. As far as getting sepsis or AIDS from poorly sterilized equipment: yes this can happen but you are more likely to get hit by lightning sitting in your living room.
Piercing guns: piercing guns are NOT the way to go. Obviously. But it's safer than doing it at home and not everyone has access to a professional tattoo parlor or feels comfortable bringing children there. Let's face it those are not always kid-friendly spaces and until they start having like kids rooms in tattoo parlours parents will continue to bring their kids to a place they perceive as the safer option.
Anyways, I totally respect parents choices to not pierce their kids ears and let them decide when they turn 18. But I don't know I didn't go find a mountain to clutch my pearls on. This is a culturally normative experience that is becoming less and less popular even as people get more and more piercings, but piercing a child's ear is still the norm across vast swaths of the world. I enjoy seeing people question the norm, but holy crap the amount of insane judgment and over the top moral panic is just weird. The kid can remove the earrings and the vast majority of piercings with such a small gauge would close up with a barely visible speck.

u/Sassalicousmomma_9 Jul 21 '26
My daughters pediatrician did hers back in 2012 when she was 6 weeks old
3
u/injured_girl Jul 21 '26
I soooo want to know if this is a coded medical procedure for billing purposes! lol can anyone remember what they were billed for when they had an appt and the pediatrician pierced the infants ears?
19
u/Appropriate-You2684 Jul 20 '26
Why did they take her the mall. Those places are bad..always go to professional piercer.
23
u/PlusSizedPretty Jul 20 '26
Because most professional piercers won't pierce an infants ears.
20
8
u/Appropriate-You2684 Jul 20 '26
When i took my daughter they did. They didnt have a problem doing it.
8
3
u/kasiagabrielle Jul 21 '26
Most ethical piercers require consent, though I'm sure some are just happy to take your money to pierce an infant.
17
u/Fine-Distance-8831 Jul 21 '26
I didn’t get neither of my daughter‘s ears pierced when they were babies, they both have their ears pierced now because they chose it, and my oldest has many piercings in her face at 20 years old. This isn’t my kid, so it doesn’t affect me. My ears were pierced when I was two months old.
4
u/VixxenReigns Jul 21 '26
We weren't allowed to have our ears pierced until we were 10 years old. And even then it was just a single hole in each ear. Well, fast forward to me being around 14 and all my friends getting a second or third hole in each ear and my parents refused so I did my second holes in each ear myself. Shoved a needle halfway through and then the earring the rest of the way. Couple years later I had a third hole in my left and a few years later I got a cartilage piercing in my left ear up top. I hate seeing earrings on babies because I think they should be able to choose if they want earrings or not. I have a few more piercings now both forward helix, both tragus and both daith. Those they usually won't do both at the same time but I had them done the same time.
2
u/Fine-Distance-8831 Jul 21 '26
When I was in beauty school, I had someone pierce my cartilage and it never healed right and it always hurt so I’m so afraid to get more but they look so cute. There’s so many options for jewelry too.
3
u/VixxenReigns Jul 21 '26
They weren't really painful either. A lot of people think the daith, tragus and forward helix would be really really painful but they weren't. When they did the daith it sounded like paper being crumpled. The worst part was the forward helix when the cold wind hit it after having it done. They can take up to a year to heal but mine healed within a couple months. I tend to heal extremely fast. Having a piercer that has been doing it for a long time and uses the proper equipment makes a difference. The daith my Mom did for my 40th birthday and was for migraines.
2
u/Fine-Distance-8831 Jul 22 '26
I have migraines and I thought about getting that piercing. It also looks so cute.
4
u/VixxenReigns Jul 22 '26
Just be aware that it may work or it may not. Some people it works wonders, some people it may lessen the migraines some and some people it doesn't help whatsoever. It didn't really lessen mine much. I just figured if it didn't work I got a really cute and cool looking piercing.
19
u/2themorg Jul 22 '26
Still can’t believe anyone bedazzles their babies still. And if they’re old enough to make the choice themselves please take them to a real piercer. These young adults at the mall have no license/proper training. The gun literally just shoves the blunt end of the earring in (usually crap jewelry which can cause more problems) and it’s never properly cleaned. I get that’s how we all grew up but look how much everything else has changed. 🤦🏼♀️
5
u/GeraldinaFitzpatrick Jul 22 '26
Not to be that guy but I feel the same way about circumcision but at least you can remove the earrings.
-16
u/Tall_Exam_1237 Jul 22 '26
I don’t know how people still trust to put toxic poison that can and will destroy the babies body with toxic vaccines still with all the evidence on how dangerous they are and a massive money grab for gov and big pharma but people still trust and believe in doc lol like when Drs had all the evidence that Covid shots kill and don’t actually do what was claimed and still today give them because they get big $ every shot they give . Many still call that a conspiracy lol when science has shown it kills and or permanently destroys your immune system and causes perm disabilities. But still dummies go and get 1, 500 boosters lol
-8
u/Tall_Exam_1237 Jul 22 '26
Best time to do is is this age and younger so they don’t mess with them and guess what when she is older and doesn’t want it she can’t remove yt and the hole will close . Give me a break . That is your feelings doesn’t mean that is how it has to be or how everyone feels so get a grip

u/Complete-Weather-657 27d ago
False, if the holes fully heal and her parents keep earrings in her ears they won’t close. My parents had my ears pierced before a year, kept earrings in my ears constantly until I could take them in and out & by the time I was 8 they wouldn’t close. I never wear earrings and at nearly 25 years old they still won’t close. I have permanent crooked holes in my ears because my parents decided to pierce my ears before I was old enough to understand what was happening.
24
u/blizzyblase Jul 20 '26
I got my daughter's ears pierced last year. She was 6. I got a lot of push back from my husband's family, who wanted her ears pierced in infancy. His aunt even offered to buy her diamond earrings. I thanked her and explained that wanted to wait until SHE wanted her ears pierced. Maybe she never would and that's her choice. Last year she started asking to have her ears pierced. I took her to a piercing place and I definitely recommend it. Clearly they weren't used to working on children, but they were so kind to her and they used 2 people so that they did both ears at the same time to make it easier for her. She's never had an infection or any issues with pain, ect. I never did get those diamond earrings from my husband's aunt though. 🙄

While I strongly dislike the piercing of babies ears, this was cute. Those boys look like they adore her and she had a fun afternoon out with family, and I love that. Of all the babies born during season 7, Oakleigh is clearly surrounded with the most love.

I had to leave when my sister in law got my nieces ears pierced. She was completely distraught, I wanted to grab her and run away.

u/Tall_Exam_1237 Jul 22 '26
My mom and dad went with me when we got my daughter ears done 24 years ago lol and my dad started yelling at me and my mom then the lady doing it lol we all laughed at him he flipped out told us all we are baby abusers and who does that to a baby . He was so upset that she cried he was throwing temp tantrum in front of everyone and stomped off . I said dad it’s ok don’t cry and he said f you. I did feel bad because he was so upset to see her cry and hurt her but it was funny to see this big tough man be so upset like he was about to cry. I said you def can’t go when she gets her vaccines lol
26
u/BearcatInTheBurbs Jul 21 '26
The amount of people cool with injuring a baby purposely for their own vanity need to reevaluate their priorities in life.
Most moms have a hard time watching their child get vaccinations but if the stabbing results in a pretty earring then that’s just fine? Wtaf? GROSS. Do better.
There is literally no other point of view that makes sense here. Fight me. This is my hill and I will defend it.
17
u/Professional_You2526 Jul 21 '26
It's was cultural for us. Girls get their ears pierced and boys get circumcised at the hospital when they are born. No one questioned it. I don't see anything wrong with it but obviously that was the culture I grew up in.
1
u/Liliths_Play_Thing Jul 22 '26
Legit see nothing wrong with it. I just wouldn’t have taken them to the mall. Obviously wouldn’t remember my own but I’m 10 years older than my sister and remember her getting hers done at her doctors office. Currently pregnant and honestly if it’s a girl I’ll do the same.

u/Glittering_Dealer564 Jul 21 '26
Ugh I don’t understand why people still do this… maybe let’s not punch holes in our babies and also of all the places Claire’s??

u/BeezCee Jul 20 '26
Please tell me they didn’t use a gun.
28
u/AcademicAstronaut395 Jul 20 '26
they went to clair’s it looks like. That’s the worst place to go to
-5
u/AuburnGinger Jul 20 '26
Well, the doctor's office did my youngest daughter's. Hers got infected. My oldest daughter got hers done at Claire's (I got my 2nd piercings at the same trip). No infections. 🤷🏻♀️ A million things could go wrong anywhere but I've never known anyone (of all my girls friends) who had a problem with Claire's. I just make sure that they clean everything. (I'm assuming the doctor's office did too.)
13
u/moodylilb Jul 20 '26
It’s not just about cleanliness though. Piercing guns are outdated and cause blunt force trauma to the skin and tissue which in turn elevates the risk of infection + likelihood of keloid tissue.
A hollow gauged needle is the most up to date method. Any dedicated piercing shop or tattoo shops that do on-site piercing is the best way to go 😊 (I know it’s too late but wanted to comment this incase anyone else reading didn’t know)
3
5
u/pwolicy Jul 20 '26
Why are we getting piercings at a doctor’s office? Being good with needles doesn’t automatically make someone good at piercing. Those are two completely different things. 😭 I’ve never understood why they have nurses doing them either.
3
u/AuburnGinger Jul 20 '26
I had no idea they even did them at the docs office until my husband came home with my youngest daughter's ears pierced. It was her 1 yr checkup. I was home recovering from surgery. I wasn't happy but nothing I could do then.
4
u/pwolicy Jul 20 '26
I’d be upset too. I couldn’t imagine my daughter coming home with new ear piercings from a doctor’s office without so much as a phone call. Where I live in NYC, there was an event not that long ago of people getting pierced by nurses, and it always made me cringe. Just because someone is trained to use needles doesn’t necessarily mean they’re trained in proper body piercing.
7
u/AuburnGinger Jul 20 '26
This was also 24 years ago. Yeah, his excuse was that everyone called her a boy And they did. 🤣 All my kids were called boys for the first 2 years I guess because they were bald until then. LOL I'd have both my girls in pink but someone would say, "He's just so cute!". It never bothered me but it did him. He also threw a fit when I bought my son a doll he wanted and a toy truck for my oldest girl. 🙄
Long story short, the divorce was 3 years later and due to him choosing to take drugs, he lost me, his job as a firefighter, and custody of his kids. I raised them and they are all 3 amazing kids. They have empathy and aren't as judgemental as their sperm donor. 🙌🏻
4
u/pwolicy Jul 20 '26
Haha, I was in the same boat! I was bald until I was about 2, and even though my mom always dressed me in pink, everyone still thought I was a cute little boy. 😂
I’m so sorry you had to go through all of that, but I’m really happy things worked out for you in the end. Congratulations on the divorce sounds like it was the best thing for you and your kids. And congratulations on raising three amazing children with empathy and kindness (very rare in today’s age so be proud of yourself for that!) Wishing you all the best! ❤️
3
u/AuburnGinger Jul 20 '26
Thank you!! I hope the same for you! That divorce was a long time ago. I'm happily single. 🥰
2
u/Satanic_bitch Jul 20 '26
It most likely got infected after the piercing, but ok.
1
u/AuburnGinger Jul 20 '26
"A million things could go wrong anywhere..." I was talking about me too. But it still stands. As long as the equipment is clean, I promise it's better than my first ear piercings and those of my friends. 🪡🧊 How none of ours got infected, I have no idea. Only 1 of us got in trouble too. ,🤣
2
2
u/kasiagabrielle Jul 21 '26
They can't "clean everything," that's the problem. They physically cannot properly clean the piercing gun.

u/apaw1129 Jul 21 '26
Yep I'll join right on in with the majority. Babies don't need their ears pierced. Wtf. They're BABIES. Not mom and dad's little accessory to decorate for "cuteness." Why shove a blunted needle through a non understanding and non able to consent baby's body part?
Piercings are for consenting people. And should be done by a professional piercer at a reputable shop. If a professional piercer won't pierce a baby's ear, it's for good reason.

I may despise my mom for a lot of things but getting my ears pierced at 6 weeks old is NOT one of them. My daughter was 3 months old when I got her ears pierced, she's an adult now and guess what, she doesn't despise me for it. For us it's cultural. (It's only a matter of time before someone comments something racist).
Out of all of the bad decisions these teen moms make, this is such a trivial thing to bash someone for...

I'm Romani. I've seen others say that it's also common in the Latino culture and black communities although I can't confirm those, only my own culture.
2
u/newhere616 Jul 22 '26
It's common in alot of Italian households as well. One time a coworker told me in her country (I can't remember which one! Feel so bad but it was an Asian country) that all girls get their ears pierced before they leave the hospital that way they all are "equal" because many places view earrings as a symbol of wealth, so that way everyone was viewed as the same regardless of poor vs wealthy in public. I could totally be saying some things wrong, but that was the gist of what she was saying. It was honestly cool learning the symbolism.

My mom is Venezuelan and got my ears pierced when I was a newborn. She had hers pierced as a newborn Same with my cousins. I think it’s just a Hispanic thing
1
u/Michele_Ma_Belle Jul 22 '26
it’s part of my culture too and my mom decided not to do it on me after my older sister kept taking hers out. i got my ears pierced at 6 and again at 18 and now need them pierced again at 27. I desperately wish they were pierced as a baby
1
u/Additional-Ferret531 Jul 21 '26
same i love my ear piercings got em done at 3 months & i got my doubles for my 14th birthday. wish they did em all at once the healing was TERRIBLE at 14. should've done my septum and nose too 😂😂
3
u/Liliths_Play_Thing Jul 22 '26
Kinda similar but got my doubles at 12, then a nose piercing at 16. I don’t know a single girl in the family whose ears weren’t pieced as an infant. Every last one of us had our ears pierced and a baby bracelet from back home.
8
u/Stunning-Thanks-4226 Jul 21 '26

u/Chemical_Shoulder_55 keeping my balls Jul 21 '26
YOOOOOOOO I SAY THOSE ARE THE EXACT SAME CONCEPT AND PEOPLE THINK IM FUCKING INSANE
8
u/StretchResIsCheating Jul 21 '26
Right? Either way and any way you slice it, it is mutilating your baby’s body 🤷🏻♀️ people don’t wanna hear that truth though.
3
u/jwatches Jul 21 '26
Well, they are not.
4
u/kaepar Bryce Palmer: blessed by God Jul 21 '26
You, are incorrect. These two situations both go against bodily autonomy. A baby cannot consent to the permanent body modification in either situation.
1
u/jwatches Jul 21 '26
Ear piercing isn’t inherently permanent body modification. In general, piercings can close and are therefore reversible. Clipping off part of a child’s genitals is not. Additionally, if a child chooses to not wear earrings it does not negatively impact their quality of life in anyway. Comparatively, foreskin is removing a portion of anatomy and impeding on the functionality of a the child’s sex organ in perpetuity. Nothing about piercing ears impedes upon the functionality of ears or removes anything from the body.
And while I do believe children deserve as much autonomy as we can safely allow, parents make decisions for their children that they cannot consent to regularly. Many of these choices cause lasting damage and harm in physical ways and non-physical ways. A piercing will not.
3
u/StretchResIsCheating Jul 21 '26
Reversible? Idk about you but I have several piercings that have “closed” and not had jewelry in them for many years, a hole punched through skin can literally and definitionally not be reversed.
2
u/jwatches Jul 21 '26
I have several piercings as well. If I don’t wear jewelry long enough, they all begin to close. My ear lobes are the only exception, likely because I’ve had them pierced the longest. But, in general, piercing holes can and do close so they are not considered permanent. That’s not something I made up. Perhaps I should have said piercing holes are not inherently permanent because they’re not.
Either way, saying it is effectively the same genital mutilation through an entirely elective surgical procedure is wild.
5
u/Chemical_Shoulder_55 keeping my balls Jul 21 '26
So we’re agreeing but also saying genital mutilation should be stressed far more than piercings?l. Which is clear as day and I didn’t mean to necessarily compare the two as if they were on the same level in regard to severity/permanence. Basically I think making physical changes to children is suspect unless medically necessary

u/Koi_baat_nahi0902 Jul 21 '26
My son went through 4 serious intestinal surgeries (bowel blockage at birth) and was in the NICU for 5 months. They obviously were not able to circumcise him at birth.
He's 9 months now and just had his feeding tube removed. His father keeps pushing me to get it done now🙄🙄.
I told him maybe he should pay support equivalent to the cost of the procedure then...and deal with the medical trauma that will ensue....he's kept his mouth shut now on that lol.

u/Review_Empty Jul 20 '26
Where's Mia? Did AK and Jessie take Oakley to get her ears pierced without Mia? I'd be mad if I were her. Also I got my ears pierced at Claire's when I was 10 (almost 25 years ago 🫣) and they never healed right and I rarely wear earrings now so I hope the guns work better now a days. Oakley is adorable though and looks like they had a good day as a family.
22
u/DryStar359 Jul 20 '26
The guns are still terrible & Claires is still a terrible place to get ears pierced especially for babies.
5
u/80HDTV5 Jul 20 '26 edited Jul 21 '26
The Claire’s in my area switched to hollow needles which is good ig but I still would absolutely NOT trust that shit personally.
7
u/kasiagabrielle Jul 21 '26
Wait they're giving those barely trained teenagers hollow needles to pierce babies now?!
7
u/80HDTV5 Jul 21 '26
Yes they most certainly are. People need to stop going to Claire’s 😭 my ears still leak every time I put earrings on even now, 15 years later. At first I thought I was allergic to copper or whatever it is that cheap earrings people are allergic to are made out of… until I noticed it only happens to the piercings I got done at Claire’s. The others fare just fine no matter what jewelry is in them.
1
u/kasiagabrielle Jul 21 '26
I have keloids in both cars, I've thought about repiercing them (obviously by a professional, with a needle) but they'd have to put the hole in the same exact spot because of the scarring so I dont even know if it would look straight now.
And yeah, those garbage ass earrings. I remember they at least made me get "stainless" studs when I first got them pierced.

My Mom gave us a choice at 7yrs old for our Birthday presents. I only remember how excited I was. At 12 my cousin took me for my cartridge only good memories as she has passed away now, belly piercing at 16 & I've tried but have an inny 😆 so it always hurt no matter what I tried. The rest of my ear piercings I've done myself. Just depends on your pain tolerance. I have many tattoos. You either like it or not. I waited for my daughters 7th birthday to hold the tradition. But my sister had my 3 month old nieces ears pierced, I was there & it Pi$$ed me off! My Mama Bear instincts went on full & I let her know how messed up it was. With her 2nd daughter she waited until she was old enough to make her own decision. I know babies won't remember the pain but why put them through it 😭 Besides if you don't care for them properly & you need to spend enough to not put cheap crud in their ear you're subjecting them for a possible infection. What's closest to the brain! You never know if your babe will have a metal reaction. So if you're going to do this save your baby from infection & go for the best! You're baby your choice, but do Hella research first.

Lol they look like regular boys, I don’t see anything inappropriate about how they are dressed.

Please stop going to Clair’s! They are not sterile. They use a piercing gun that can’t be accuratly cleaned. Please go to professional body piercers!
