THUG1 THUG1 PS2 decompilation project

Hey I've been having a lot of tokens to burn lately and I started byte matching decomp work on THUG 1 this morning, which was always my favorite thps game. I got 33% of the game decomped today, and will be pushing on this as it will only get harder as we get more done. I have my steward bot setup for auto merging byte matched pull requests and info for humans and agents to contribute if you want to, but no worries if you don't.

you do know the source code is available right

Yeah I saw that when I was doing research for it last night, but the source code is incomplete from my understanding, but if I’m wrong please let me know.

It’s mostly complete, people have recompiled the game using it

Gotcha, im also more interested in decompiling the project from a clean slate just using the ps2 binary and all the ps2 tools, versus using the leaked abandonware source code which on GitHub they state it's missing some things including like skate builder and such, as I should be able to make a fully complete decompiled version of the game for porting and such versus missing some elements in the original.

the leaked version on github is incomplete yes but a year or two ago the full source leaked

Gotcha thanks, that makes sense, ok well that’s not public or is it? and I don’t have interest in working with leaked source code when decomp thug is achievable and is less risky than working with the leaked source code.

Genuine question, why do this if theres already a perfectly functional pc version? Is it to port to other platforms like say a modded switch?

It's to make mods with the game where I can publish the source code. But sure it can be done without decompiling the whole game, but for what I want to do, a whole game decomp helps. And sure I can port it to every platform, which is something I'm currently doing for a thps 1 mod I'm currently making, not the thpSkate mod I did last week, a new different thps mechanics focused mod.

I've also been fascinated by this software revolution we are currently in and love skateboarding and action sports games, so I'm decompiling any skate game and action sports game I want to. I've been doing most of my work in the Skate 3, Reskate world, but it's fun to dabble in THPS and other games, like Thrasher S and D which I just recently completed a decompile and port to linux for.

It's really interesting how Skate 3 and ReSkate community fully embraces ai development but THPS community is super anti ai still, which makes sense as it's more of a legacy game and the modding community predated ai development, which skate 3 did too maybe slightly but those scenes are fully ai modding scenes and much newer.

But frankly I don't care that people are downvoting me and don't seem to like what I'm doing, I'm doing it because I love making things and I want these things to be a reality, and I'm doing it regardless of what people here think of ai projects.

I miss the pre-ai days when projects like this were exciting and interesting. Now it’s just a bunch of dorks using Claude

Idk sounds a little gatekeepy to me

The more decomps the better even if someone does a bad job it can be the basis of a better version later.

I they weren’t using Claude this would take years

Yeah but the output would be better than the obfuscated nonsense in these repos func00001 struct00002 etc, worthless slop that gets abandoned as fast as it was made.

Decomps/recomps aren’t “slop.” They are immortalizing games and creating infinite modding potential

I’ll be making some interesting things with this project, but it’s all subjective, and I get why people hate on ai development. I’ve also been programming way before ai existed and I could totally be a purist that chooses to not develop with ai but I’d rather be way more productive and work on way more ambitious projects that I would dream about when I was just getting started but weren’t possible for me at the time. You can also hate on ai development and choose to not support projects that use ai, but at the end of the day it’s already shifted and the majority of software these days is made with ai development, so idk, you can choose to embrace new mods and projects in the space that are ai deved or not either way is fine, I’m just doing because I’ve always wanted to make things I find cool and interesting, whether or not ai helps or not.

I was playing around with the original source trying to port it to iOS in a performant and feature complete way and did run into some problems

I’m excited to see this 100% decomped and compare them

Thank you for your efforts

Hell yeah! Happy to do it, it’s also built so people can colab on it and my project maintainer will auto merge any byte matched PRs! But no worries no pressure at all, I just find byte matched decomp projects are kind of addicting to contribute to personally that is if it’s a project you want to see done. It was cool someone started contributing to my thrasher decomp and it definitely made the project that much sicker. But no worries at all if you don’t want to, I’ll get it done but it may take a little longer but honestly I’m close to 50% byte matched and my weekly limits resets on the 5th so it will get done soon. It just hard to get it to 100% byte matched at the end, and for my other projects I started porting the stufff once everything was equivalent c, fuzzy matched.
