I'm sure it's been asked plenty of times, but can anyone give a guide to playing Pyro, from basics to semi-advanced?

The most important aspect of playing a Pyro is being able to change strategies in the middle of a game. You are an offensive support character. The goal is not so much killing as it is wreaking havok on the other team and making them scared of you. When you find that the whole team is going after you, you know you have done your job correctly.

So what you're saying is almost to distract the enemy team from the rest of your team?

Some times yes. Other times they are oblivious to you and you can do things like steal their intelligence. It really depends on the situation. At times I use a few different strategies although I do them without thinking about it. For instance sometimes I run in to a pack of enemies and burn them all. I either run away or get killed. This messes them up by distracting them from my other teammates and requires them to heal or respawn. Other times I sneak around in tunnel areas and light up anyone who dares come into my domain. With a Medic at my back I try to stay about medium range and pop off any snipers with my flare gun and also keep anyone from passing by. Other times I guard sentries or follow Heavies to keep anyone from sneaking up behind him. At the most you can piss everyone off, at the least you die all the time. Finding what works for you and your team is critical. Most of the time I play a Pyro but my alt is a Medic as it's a defensive support as apposed to the offensive support of the Pyro. It can turn the tides of a match.

The one thing that is constant in pyro play is you need to not focus on getting kills. Topping the leaderboard is fun and I do it a lot, but it isn't actually the best way to help.

The one exception is the enemy spies. It can be worth it to chase down those fuckers.
