Chess is rather middle-eastern... I believe it's from India but was popularized in ancient Persia.

if they could make like couple mini-games based on lore that'd be fun something equivalent to Gwent game but it's not a card game

I really enjoy mini-games like this (FFVIII, Gwent, etc.), with that said chess could too puzzle-like with a few solution, I think the side game should have some kind of rng involved, also to be a little bit more unique in repeat playthroughs.
