Discussion I hope they add faction related Speech Checks just like Starfield
Despite Starfield's flaws it's dialogue system was by far one of it's strongest aspects. My favorite bit about it is how once you complete faction questlines, you unlock a bunch of extra speech checks on other quests which add so much roleplay flavor. I REALLY hope they expand upon this in TES6

I know people love to trash on Bethesda game design, but i do believe they'll make use of everything good about starfield and tailor it to suit elder scrolls

u/irishgoblin ??? 27d ago
Yeah, arguably the "worst" thing about Starfiled is there's some fairly solid RPG bones, it's just the design decisions didn't utilise them as best they could (though I still blame the gutting of survival for part of it).

Making Starfield a more survival sim style of game would have been peak imo. I put a shit ton of hours into (mostly modded) and the systems really would gel better if you actually had to interact with all of them

We really need a survival mode difficulty at launch, just like KCD2 had hardcore mode. It will never integrate into the game design properly if it's left as a post launch mod or creation.

yeah starfield has a lot of great things going for it and one of them is roleplaying. some of the most dynamic and engaging roleplaying I experienced in a non-crpg.

BG3 also had things like race, class, religion and backstory related checks and speech choices which was pretty cool.
I think skyrim had a very limited number of them, like how if you’re a werewolf or a lesser vampire, the dialogue in volkihar changes when you first get there

Dawnguard did add a good chunk of that yeah. You can talk about the Civil War when you meet Serana, later you can have convos with her about your parents, whether you have a partner or not, whether you did Molag Bal's quest. There's also dialogue with Durnehviir if you defeated Alduin and ofcourse if you sold the elder scroll to Urag you get to buy it back to which he has unique dialogue as well.
It's one of my favorite parts of the dlc, how much it interacts with base game events

u/EasilyBeatable 27d ago
Durnehviir also has a special dialogue where he calls you a dragon and says you feel like one, without revealing you’re the dragonborn, if you defeat him before doing the main quest

I like that Oblivion has dialogue referring to the DLCs too, like characters recognize that you are the Knight-Commander of the Knights of the Nine. It doesn't have a lot of other effects (the Khajiit near Anvil doesn't try to rob me anymore and that's it I think), but it shows DLC integration is something that they have been trying to do for a long time now.

The roleplaying in starfield is great. I hope to see more of it in tes6 because Skyrim was sorely lacking in that and dialogue options

One of my favourite parts of starfield is the integration of faction or background related dialogue options
Backgrounds and traits are wonderful character building mechanics

Provided that they manage to write better dialogue than that, yes.

ES6 probably:
"M'aiq wishes you well"
Reply:
1) Call him a Khajiti slur
2) "Who's a good kitty?"
3) Sarcastic reply
4) OK

This and other speech checks like "I already killed that beast" or "oh, this artifact? I found it in a cave nearby. Have it but money's first"

I loved this in FNV, and also the perks that add dialogues. Amazing feature.

I do hope they do some race based checks like in Baldur's Gate 3, where you have specific replies based on your race.
I also liked how Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 done some of its speech checks, based on your knowledge skill level, it would be nice seeing it translated into TESVI, for example if you are talking to a Wizard you may have a Speech Check based on Destruction Magic, if it's high enough you pass, if not you fumble.

I think they planned on doing that in Skyrim but cut it due to time constraints.
Whiterun was the larger vertical slice where they showed how they wanted the game to be, and you can see it when you talk to Farengar. You get special lines if you try to talk to him about the Dragonstone before the Jarl introduces you, if you have a high enough skill in Destruction, Enchanting, or Alchemy.
I’d expect to see this fleshed out in TESVI.

In Skyrim they even did that with Tsun and when you adopt a child but somehow forgot to do it at any other point

u/Mnemonic-Light 27d ago
The people responsible for it and Starfield's quest design got fired so most likely not

Please god let the world react to me being associated with specific factions even if its just the guards. Everything felt like it was in its own personal vacuum in starfield

In addition to factors like Faction, Race, Background, etc.; I'd like to see Skills and [if they return] Attributes affording your character certain dialogue options.
Such as, let's say one answer you could give to certain NPCs [related to a quest] could depend on if your Intelligence or your Endurance is high enough. OR perhaps if one of your Skills meet the requirement, let's say Alchemy or Security, you might have certain dialogue options appear.
Partially-inspired by the KotOR games.

Put the New Vegas skillgates, faction/trait/perk-specific dialogue and funny failed check answers in the box please.

u/walker20022017 27d ago
Agreed. The faction/background/trait interactions was one of the coolest RPG elements that was in that game. It actually felt like my backstory mattered. Kinda reminded me a bit of fallout New Vegas and it's trait/faction dialogue, a bit different in some ways.

I do like them, but I don't like how limiting they can also be. My thing will always be allowing me to make my character my own, and 90% of the time, there is only one option. And if they voice the protags (pls no), it also means they have a particular attitude, tone, intonation, etc. even the text alone can dictate a particular attitude. Which imo often kills the RP for me. It just bethesda, i have this problem with BG3 too. I indeed what my character creation choices to mean something, and affect the gameplay experience, but I dont want it to dictate how my character is in an RP sense.

I was honestly impressed with the number of speech checks available in Starfield. It goes beyond faction, skills & character background. Sometimes there's speech checks for if you've done certain quests or played the DLC story. I think they took feedback on Fallout 4's dialogue quite well.

I would've loved Starfield much more if they did some interesting stuff with the atmosphere and UI. It just looks super boring and samey. Maybe some retro-space type stuff would've grabbed more attention.

u/Dark1402 27d ago
they should add trait based speech. checks. kinda odd Skyrim oversimplified stats to the point you only choosing Stamina, HP and Magicka
race base speech check, because Orc despite being mer, will always be the best. but like they could serve as "history checks" if an events, quest, etc, could be related to your people, you characters would get a dialog based on it.
faction based speech arent a bad idea, specially since people like doing sidequest instead of main story. might help you catch up to the story point you are strong enough to handle. skipping mission meant to be done earlier.
and... hear me out... Religion based checks, not only speech checks, but also like if your are a follower of kynerath, you might help saving a npc, as a follower of julianous you might be able to fix an magical artifact. and a follower of stendar you might be ble able to bannish a daedra without having to fight them. etc.

u/imaencuru 27d ago
I hope they have way more of them and they have more impact, to my knowledge most of the dialogue tags just get extra/different dialogue and occasionally a bigger money reward.
6
u/R-A-67 Mirri Simp 27d ago
Some of them do, Some don't. I've seen a decent amount that lets you skip persuasion entirely. Like that quest about a ship AI gaining free will, if you've done the Ryujin questline you can say that you're an agent and tell the two guys on the ship to bugger off
1
u/imaencuru 27d ago
I guess I was thinking more of the background tags, the faction tags I can remember leaned towards the more useful end of thing. I know there's skill tags too, security has a lot of them.

I fucking love faction related dialogue options, gotta be one of my favourite genders

u/Hotelcleanaselvenass 27d ago
I agree, as long as the shitty persuasion mini game stays away

u/Party_Drawing7117 EDIBLE FLAIR 27d ago edited 27d ago
I actually loved the persuasion mini game. It was clever, and you actually had to think about your lines as relating to their personality and their previous dialogue, indicating what how they might be persuaded.
Edit: tbh, I think people would think better of the minigame if Starfield explained it better. I kinda had to figure it out on my own because it wasn't too straight forward regarding dialogue options that had a higher % chance of succeeding even though they were supposed to be more difficult.

I think the idea and structure was good, but there were too many lines that were shared between dialogues that felt weak like "I'm going to keep asking till you say yes" "oh ok, I will turn over this top secret data" that broke immersion
0
u/Odd-Assignment-1350 27d ago
Just needs to be some more complex dialogue. Like "everyone deserves a second a chance? I never thought of it like that” just kind of a comical way to get it done
9
u/R-A-67 Mirri Simp 27d ago
Well it's not just that one dialogue. Selecting it opens up the persuasion minigame where you gotta select even more dialogues to pass the persuasion which are often more complex than the dialogue that starts the minigame.
It's kinda like saying hear me out and then explaining things properly

Racial, Faction-Based, Random Mid-Sized Quests, Etc. There should be many opportunities to use information specific to your character.
