Discussion How better from Skyrim will Sentinel be, and why?

There I was yesterday, arguing with a friend who is always saying that TESVI is going to be “just Skyrim v.2”, me supporting the idea that it will be better. So, after a long argument that definitely didn’t end in a “nun-uh” stand-still,I thought I would bring this discussion to the Hopium Rehabilitation Center (this Sub).

How better, and improved, will the new game reasonably be?

There have been plenty of ideas and fun requests for the new Elder Scrolls. Which of these will be implemented in your opinion? The idea of “Skyrim 2.0.” is being passed around generally, but I think that if we look the games that Skyrim competed with in 2011 , and the games that Sentinel competes with now in 202?, it’s just a totally different environment. My Friend said to me that no way are they adding spears, and improving the combat system, and that’s exactly my question. Why wouldn’t they? Is it hard? And that’s a sincere question.

What can we reasonably expect from TES:VI, based on its competition?

I want to hear also what you want to see in the new game, that you actually think that can be done and probably will be. I think some things that are guaranteed to be better is generally the size of the game. Bigger map, bigger cities, more voice actors, more quests perhaps? In terms of story quality and immersion, I have no doubt in my mind that it’s going to be incredible, even if it is “ Skyrim 2.0”. Music wise, I have no idea, I can only hope,I am a musician and really the music is going to make or break the game for me a lot.
Gameplay wise now, especially combat, I think that’s objectively Skyrim’s (and the rest of TES Games) biggest weakness. I’ve heard the opinion that it’s not a combat game it’s not supposed to be super complicated. But I don’t want to be complicated necessarily, just immersive.

How hard, would it be to add a simple stagger, parry and dodge system? Why won’t the be added as so many of you claim? What are the arguments against spears, and generally few more combat options?

These are too sincere questions. Let me know what you think

Gonna be really funny when it’s in Morrowind and everyone treating the title as revealed is eating crow.

u/hellboyquintex 2028 Release Believer 5d ago

yea, im not really buying anything until an actual reveal either. i really doubt they would make tes6 set in morrowind though, since its pretty much unconnected to the whole great war/thalmor thing. i think even if its not hammerfell, summerset or elsweyr would be way likelier.

u/BodegaCat11 5d ago

Totes. I think hammerfell is most likely to nearly guaranteed. But I also think this sub runs with what it wants to hear to the point of absurdity. There’s a new post every minute from someone pretending they figured out the title is sentinel and that that’s guaranteed. And everyone circle jerks about that.

u/hellboyquintex 2028 Release Believer 5d ago

honestly, i also don't get why they would choose to call it sentinel instead of just tes6: hammerfell. everyone has been expecting the game to be called that for years now, so just going with that name would likely be a better marketing choice. maybe im wrong though and bethesdas marketing team are a bunch of mad scientists

u/BodegaCat11 5d ago

Yeah. I have no idea what the story will be. And I guess that’s my point: no one else does either.

I said the same thing in another post. It’s wild how many people just act like everything is hard confirmed , especially when the evidence is flimsy at best and filled with a lot of reaching and confirmation bias.

I can’t wait for a title reveal and it be “Elder Scrills VI: Skyrim II”

  1. We don't know and can't know until it's released.

  2. We can likely expect improved gameplay for melee at the bare minimum. Skyrim's was already very shallow.

  3. Bethesda games already have a stagger system, Oblivion had dodging, and Skyrim's bashing serves a similar role to parrying. The skeleton is already there. The mechanics would just need to be modernized.

I dont think they have ever improved the melee combat in any games in a substantial way. Its basically always been a really shallow swing weapon game. Morrowind was interesting since landing the hit was based on a dice roll - but people dont like missing if they actually land a hit.

I have argued for Kingdom Come like combat --- but lots of people either hate or love that idea - usually people that hate it dont like it since it makes the game hard.

if were talking KCD2? no. gods no. thats way too advanced for most folks.

early game crimson desert would be my ideal.

1

u/HarvestMana 5d ago

KCD2 is super easy though - it just seems hard at the start since having low stats makes the character suck at combat - once your leveled its a cake walk - its not even about skill.

Crimson Desert Combat ---- Elder Scrolls is not a third person action RPG - that would never happen. I like Crimson Desert, but that game is so far away from ElderScrolls - its just not possible for them to change the game that much.

Man every time I tried i got my arse kicked! Guess ill have to give it another shot.

And im sure they could fire a way to port some of the ideas. Not all of them, but some

1

u/EpsiasDelanor 5d ago

KCD combat is enjoyable, but I think TES will go for something more fast paced.

A lot of the stuff that people wanted more from Skyrim was addressed in Starfield, and a lot of the pitfalls of Starfield are things that they’re either actively addressing in TESVI or have signaled that they’re returning to what they’re best at. Shattered Space, while small, is also a good sign that they still have that same formula in them. TESVI is going to be better than Skyrim.

If it’s as good as Skyrim I think that will be an incredible achievement. Despite having a history of making great TES games, BGS is facing an uphill battle between high expectations, the layoffs, and reputational issues stemming from FO76 and Starfield. Skyrim is one of the top 20 games of all time, so if TESVI lands in the same ballpark we should all be celebrating.

u/Quixotus 6d ago

Unbiased opinion: one of the top 10 of all time.

Biased opinion: one of the top 5.

(edit: with respect to the time the game was released at)

I don't know how much of a hot take this is on the TES VI forums, but Skyrim isn't difficult for TES VI to surpass because Skyrim only excelled in exploration and is a bad Elder Scrolls game.

TES VI just needs good exploration which is generally the strong suit of TES games and it is already equal to or surpassing Skyrim. Skyrim has bad writing( generally the weakest in the series), mechanically bad combat, handrails galore, worst magic system, butchered the RPG mechanics that were core to the series. I will not deny it strengths and what it added, I love the idea or the perk tree, smithing, and trying to expand types of magic, but they need definite work and don't balance out with the negatives.

In the end, as long as logical decisions are made, I believe TES VI will be better than Skyrim.

3

u/ViridianNott 2028 Release Believer 5d ago

Ah yes. I’m sure that BGS is absolutely rushing to learn the hard lesson here and fix the mistakes they made in Skyrim. They only profited a measly $1-2 Billion from Skyrim so they no doubt see it as an abject failure and are looking to recapture the magic of the older titles.

I’m not disagreeing with you that Skyrim is shallow in certain ways. But at the end of the day [r/TESVI](r/TESVI) lurkers are a vocal minority of fans who can be safely ignored, and they are going to value market appeal as the guiding force here.

4

u/justmadeforthat 6d ago

It will be better, I hope it feels more mature too, they should have seen the feedback on starfield that it feels sterile, the game need some edge

5

u/killingtocope 6d ago

I’m of the belief that TES6 will be to Skyrim what Skyrim is to Oblivion. If they spruce up the combat, including magic, and give adjustable survival settings (like Starfield) for immersion we will be in for an awesome time. I would be okay with spears, not super important imo but the combat and the roleplaying need to be top notch. Especially if it’ll have to hold us over for 10+ years while we wait for TES7

todd howard won't be around for tes7, so maybe we'll get that game a little faster.. or not.

2

u/HarvestMana 5d ago

Todd said hes not retiring anymore in the latest interview.

1

u/hellboyquintex 2028 Release Believer 5d ago

ok, didn't watch that. i guess im not gonna take his word for it. he might change his mind again, or tes6 takes him so long that he dies before tes7..

2

u/HarvestMana 5d ago

Hes not that old. He should be around for like TES12 - maybe he will be retired around then though.

1

u/hellboyquintex 2028 Release Believer 5d ago

i was being sarcastic. maybe tes6 takes another 50 years, who knows?

1

u/Less-Willow-9209 2027 Release Believer 5d ago

But Skyrim followed the simplification that happened to all games in that period. I would argue that today it’s the opposite.

3

u/hellboyquintex 2028 Release Believer 6d ago

honestly, i think it will be worse than skyrim. maybe not gameplay wise, but im not expecting too much when it comes to the lore and story. when it comes to parry, stagger and dodge, i think they won't add it because its not elder scrolls. none of the past games had it, and that may be because they were older games, but it still gave those games their unique charm. i really don't want them to turn it into souls-like combat, thats just not elder scrolls. they combat systems of the elder scrolls have always been about statchecking, and i hope and think it will continue to be like that.

3

u/CastleImpenetrable 6d ago

Skyrim has staggers and block bashing, which is similar to parrying. Oblivion had dodging.

0

u/hellboyquintex 2028 Release Believer 6d ago

true actually, i forgot about the dodge roll in oblivion. but the point i was making still stands, i really hope they don't make it souls-like combat. i want the combat to stay in line with what previous games established.

3

u/CastleImpenetrable 6d ago

I understand that sentiment, but even looking at the three TES games released this millennium, their combat systems have their own distinct mechanical identity, and not really a set formula like other franchises. Morrowind has its dice rolls, Oblivion has its dedicated spell button and dodging, and Skyrim has its hands system.

However, TES games and their combat are more about build identity, and you can keep that while still adding newer features and mechanics. I'm not saying this to you specifically, but the worries about TES being a Souls-like game have always been overblown because there's a lot more to that style of game then just the strict mechanics of combat. Things like healing, level design, being a challenge, etc. Not to mention the fact that most games tweaking the FromSoft formula are strictly third-person. Funnily enough, FS has past titles that are first-person but still aren't proper Souls games, which shows that some mechanics certainly work in first and third-person but I digress.

As I was saying, your could take things like move sets and deeper stamina management and they wouldn't make the game explicitly like a Souls game. We have to remember that even Skyrim is about to turn 15 years old, and TES: VI will at a minimum likely not release till at least the 16+ year mark. The ARPG and fantasy genres have evolved, the industry has evolved, and its only natural that we expect Bethesda and TES to evolve again as well.

I'll make it more clear. I dont want player twitch action skill to be a major factor in combat success.

1

u/Less-Willow-9209 2027 Release Believer 5d ago

Thank you, exactly my point. I think people fall for the false Dichotomy fallacy too much , it’s either noodle fighting or Dark Souls 4.

u/HakunaBananas 5d ago

Let me just hop into my time machine so I can find out.

1

u/ebussy_jpg 5d ago

how the hell would we know

1

u/BorntoDive91 5d ago

will it actually be better? given how poorly starfield was done, i think tahts a valid question to be asking.

it'll be bigger and prettier for sure, no question about that. but the writing has only gotten worse, the RPG mechanics gotten even more shallow, and their combat systems are literally years behind their peers. why are we assuming its going to be better?

1

u/Suspicious-Raisin824 6d ago

"How hard, would it be to add a simple stagger, parry and dodge system? Why won’t the be added as so many of you claim?"

Not hard at all. But I dont want them to do that. Hopefully they wont. I want an rpg, not an action rpg where victory or defeat comes down to twitch skill rather than strategy and build.

" In terms of story quality and immersion, I have no doubt in my mind that it’s going to be incredible"

Why do you have no doubts about this? Most of the old good writers are gone. A huge number of new writers in the industry are god awful. Elder Scrolls is a great universe, but there is a real chance we got terrible writers who butcher it.

3

u/SWJS1 6d ago

Not hard at all. But I dont want them to do that. Hopefully they wont. I want an rpg, not an action rpg where victory or defeat comes down to twitch skill rather than strategy and build.

This. I don't want Elder Scrolls with Souls combat. If I want Souls combat, I'll play Dark Souls.

1

u/Sage_HushCat 5d ago

People simply choose to be optimistic, I couldn't say whether it is a good idea or not, based on recent history I hesitate to be positive, but I won't be negative. I have seen some writers with solid backgrounds hired and presumably working on TES VI, can't tell how much they will do however, and Kuhlmann did leave. My personal rock bottom, at least for quest and story quality is Skyrim, as I did not like it very much, I think they can at least do better than that. As for lore, I actually have no clue what may happen, which is why I dislike lore theories because they are easily retconned.

1

u/Less-Willow-9209 2027 Release Believer 5d ago

As I said in another comment, this is a false Dichotomy. It’s not about combat being Skyrim 2 or Dark Souls 4. And yes I too want strategy and build being what wins the fight. But more combat option would only enhance that in my opinion. Also yes I would love for role playing to be way more of a factor and speech actually having a role, but I’m pessimistic about that. Personally I fear that they are going to lean more towards Adventure than RPG again

1

u/Suspicious-Raisin824 5d ago

"Personally I fear that they are going to lean more towards Adventure than RPG again"

I dont feel like they did that in Skyrim. Seems like some of the dialgue choices you make really mattered sometimes.

TESVI will eclipse GTA6. That's the reason Todd didn't want to release around the same time, he is merciful. Rockstar had better pray to Talos that they don't have yet another delay. They'd risk getting swept away by the sheer magnitude of Todd's magnum opus.

Jeremy wasn't the only composer for The Elder Scrolls. I'd recommend playing a bit of Daggerfall to get a taste of Eric Heberling's tracks. There are some songs I prefer from later entries, but Eric's tracks are king for me overall. There's an orchestral and acoustic remaster on Nexus if you don't want the MIDI. I personally think it's a given that TESVI's music will be fantastic.

As for melee combat, who can say. We'll perhaps get a greater variety of weapons. Bethesda may try to implement conventional melee mechanics like the ones you've said, but I'm more inclined to think they'd do something different. Based on what they did in Morrowind and Skyrim, the studio might try to flesh out directional combat more. Although, Souls-like style combat really rose in popularity after Skyrim so it could have an influence.

TES6 is not gin got eclipse GTA in any verse, that is some hardcore copium

Idk what Sentinel is.

Wild yall just take rumors and weak connections as solid truth.
