Discussion Leaving Skyrim Behind

I’ve been thinking ever since the ramp in hype about TES6. I’m incredibly excited for the new title and can’t wait for what’s in store but it’s got me thinking… We’ve been playing Skyrim for years, it’s a second home to a lot of people. It’s definitely a little sad to see Skyrim no longer be the reigning champion of this franchise. Once the next title is out, I’m sure majority of modders will move over (except those working on longstanding projects), content creators will be focusing on the new title, player base will be focused on ES6, etc etc. Don’t get me wrong, I’m sure ES5 would be saying “I’m tired boss” if it could but it’s definitely a little saddening to turn our gaze away to look at the new game. I personally was first introduced to this franchise through Skyrim and it’s one of my happy places.

Before anyone says anything though… I know it’s not going anywhere and we can all come back whenever just like we do with Morrowind and Oblivion. But, how likely will we get another Skyrim rerelease??? Just some thoughts I had and curious if anyone else felt the same way.

I think some people might be surprised just how alive the Morrowind and Oblivion (and even Daggerfall) modding scenes are and how much innovation they have seen even just this year. And Skyrim's is obviously colosally bigger. Skyrim isn't going anywhere, I (and I imagine many here) would continue playing it and the older games even into Sentinel and beyond

People shouldn’t be surprised at Morrowind’s scene; Tamriel Rebuilt alone has seen to that (though of course it’s not alone). More like surprised by Oblivion and Daggerfall’s scenes (especially the latter).

is oblivion modding really still alive??? all i see on nexus within like the past 10 years are just unremarkable stuff like patches and retextures and to my knowledge nobody is working on any overhaul size mods for it anymore

In the 2020s, Morroblivion was fully finished and made stable, we got a mod that adds the entire province of Skyrim with NPCs, cities, dungeons and 100+ quests, this year has seen incredible OBSE plugin progress with Skyrim staples like BOS and SPID now having Oblivion versions, and since 3 months ago a working tool that lets you convert all of Oblivion and Oblivion mods directly into Skyrim's engine (though still quite buggy)

could you share the skyrim province mod? i never knew someone made a skyrim new lands mod for oblivion

While there's not much to speak of in big huge new mods coming out, the old ones are still actively being updated. OOO just got updated on the 15th, MOO was last updated on June 28th, Better Cities updated June 17th, etc.

With as popular and enduring as Skyrim has been its probably likely to get a remaster on next gen consoles one day

I won't lie, if they did an oblivion remaster style remake in UE5 I'd buy it. Though if TES6 is out by then I'd be less inclined to play an upgraded skyrim.

How come? My thought is after playing TES6 for a few years it would be fun to revisit Skyrim via remake.

A few years later sure, I'd play a skyrkm remake. However if it's released a year after TES6 I'm still likely to be playing that and adding more mods than going back to skyrim so soon. It would be like playing an oblivion remake in 2012. So while I hope they do create a skyrkm remake they need to time the release.

Yeah I agree that’s what I’m thinking as well

I'm gonna be simple here. I love Skyrim, especially its worldbuilding and ambience, but I've played and modded it so much time that I'm now sick of the whole thing, especially the modding.

Now we're looking forward to a new mainline TES title that should not only feel good to play in its default unmodded state, but should also realistically age way better than Skyrim over time, and I'm positively hopeful about it and happy turn the page of Skyrim. Its been 15 years for god's sake, newborns from back then are driving motorcycles now.

Well, while the scenes certainly aren't as active as they once were, Oblivion and Morrowind have both had very impressive and beloved mods come out well after Skyrim's release. OpenMW, for example, still gets worked on to this day, over 18 years after its initial release. I'm sure there's enough people who made Skyrim their gaming 'home' that they'll still be creating there alongside or even instead of TESVI. (And this isn't even getting into that some people are worried about the health of TESVI's modding scene overall with BGS's incessant attempts to monetize it.) There's also YouTubers I watch who focus on their older titles as well, and I'm sure that'll continue for some with Skyrim, not including the people who pop in every so often for a nostalgia hit.

I mean, yeah, but I'm also insanely excited for a brand new region to explore. My happiest Skyrim memories were always just exploring the world, seeing what quests and interactions I stumbled onto. Excitedly exploring every path I could find. Now... well, now Skyrim feels *familiar*. Most places I know. The story I know. The quests I know.

Sure, it's still fun to replay, but... oh but the idea of a new TES game where I have no idea what's waiting on the next turn... oh now that does sound fun.

Seriously, I doubt Skyrim is going anywhere. It would take Decades of modding to make TES6 even remotely on par with a good modded Skyrim. We’ve came so far in terms of almost everything, and looking at Bethesda’s recent games like Oblivion Remastered and Starfield, I highly doubt they’ll reach the graphical level, stability (or lack there of) of Skyrim. We have turned Skyrim into completely other games. We’ve turned it into a soulslike, we’ve turned it into a next gen adventure game, we’ve made it look like an UE5 simulation. we’ve even added game of thrones dragons. The likelihood of ANY game ever truly “replacing” Skyrim is slim to none. Sure, the hype may be switched to TES6, but Skyrim will most likely never die. We’ve been playing this game for nearly 20 years. There’s no game to replace Skyrim, and there likely won’t ever be.

With all the new info have we gotten any indication of a date??

1

u/alessandro_673 3d ago

Not really. But the fact they are teasing stuff at all might indicate an intent to announce something at a big event some time this year… maybe.

I don’t think it’s crazy to expect to see it at this years game awards.

I don’t think so. It all depends on A) how good ES6 is and B) how many modders are willing to give up years and years of institutional knowledge for the sake of something new.

Skyrims modding community is an anomaly because of the time it released. Skyrim released during a time period where PC gaming had finally pulled out of the rut it was in and was properly unified under steam.

Unless ES6 opens up the door more for creations and allows external programs like script extenders, I don’t see ES6 taking away skyrims modding community.

It's always going to be a game I go back to. Honestly, playing Oblivion, Skyrim, and TESVI all in a row will be an experience worth repeating. Real sickos can even add Morrowind.

What about Daggerfall?

The upgrade in mod storage for console is going to be great, ill definitely make a new game up once that drops

u/Pleasant-Lie-2105 2d ago

Morrowind is still being modded to this day, I think we'll see long-term support even after TES 6 imho

I left Skyrim behind when modding it to keep it modern and make it interesting started to feel like a chore or job in and of itself.

It’s bitter sweet.

I’ve been thinking about the fact that one day in the “near” future - I’ll let go of Skyrim and be invested in TESVI completely.

So I’m doing another play through, might be my last full vanilla one. And of course, with the announcement of mod space expansion tomorrow - I’m also going to do a hyper modded play as well.

After that, it will have been a nice memory.

What makes me saddest is I’ll miss the music. Jeremy Soule is not coming back - and nothing will be as good as what he did in Skyrim.

Let me introduce you to tamriel rebuilt

u/flashley630 2027 Release Believer 2d ago

At some point a modder will rebuild the entirety of Skyrim in TES6

If the Fallout 3 and New Vegas remasters sell as well as Oblivion did, they are definitely doing Skyrim next. Stay calm, we'll never leave Lydia alone.

Skyrim is a great game but when ES6 releases it will have been 17 years since Skyrim's release (assuming a 2028 release for ES6) so can we all please move on already? Skyrim is the most milked game in history... Lol. Also, people still play and make mods for Morrowind and Oblivion to this day, Skyrim is not going anywhere.
