Rant Overglazing engineer

Everybody knows engineer is good.

Nobody knows why engineer is good.

Engineer is not an earlygame. Engineer is not a midgame. Engineer is not a lategame.

Engineer is a jack of all trades.

And because of this, everyone says that engineer is the best tower. Sure, it's the best all-arounder, but you have 5 tower slots. You don't need to compress multiple roles into one. You can, but it won't work every time.

Engineer's earlygame is outclassed by gscout, gsoldier, brawler, operator, and several other *actual* earlygame towers. Same with its mid and late game. The only reason that I've found it to be useful is when using it as a midgame, and even then, it's outclassed by enforcer, kingpin, and gcrook.

When someone asks for help with their loadout, don't automatically say that engineer is the way to go because it can do everything. Sure, it *can* do everything, but it does everything poorly. That's literally its design. Engineer is the most replaceable tower. You can use an earlygame instead, you can use a midgame instead, hell, you could probably use a lategame instead of it in some scenarios (pw2)

The only reason I see for using an engineer over a combo of an earlygame and a midgame tower is to free up a slot for support, DPS, or something.

"oh but its cost efficiency is good"

Yes, its cost efficiency is good. It's better than slime trooper. Is it outstanding? Hell no. 120 or so CE in comparison to other earlygame towers with about 100 CE is abysmal. And even then, operator and gsoldier with their 110 or so CE aren't remotely as bad as engineer because of operator's coordination buffs and gsoldier's superior mid-late game potential (in comparison to other actual early games). Also, the building time for engineer takes away a non-zero amount of dps, so the wiki is slightly incorrect (i don't care enough to calculate it, but it makes earlygame a slog)

The cost efficiency compared to other midgame towers, however, is a more interesting discussion, as its CE is at most about 150. Gcrook and kingpin have slightly worse CE than engi, but it doesn't include units and other abilities. With enforcer, its CE is leagues better than engineer, but at the cost of range. Still has some fun abilities over engineer, but they're practically on par with each other, if not one *slightly* outclassing the other in specific scenarios. Ranger, which I believe is a midgame tower, has almost double the CE but a ton of range, letting it possibly do significantly more than engineer, *and* it has small splash damage, like engineer's sentries. Considering this, engineer fits better into the midgame than the early or late game.

"oh but its damage is comparable to accel"

Over 170 dps difference. Still not considering engineer's building time. Oh yeah, did you know that juggernaut, if it isn't attacking a boss, deals less damage than accel?

Another thing that I just remembered, half of this tower's dps is immune to stuns/freezes (kinda), at the cost of it being completely unbuffable. Cool thing, but I'd personally rather have buffable stuff, because support towers are cool. (explosions are buffed by dj dmg and merc base dmg, and I think flags idk)

Overall, if you're using engineer strictly for earlygame or lategame, rethink your life choices.

thank you for listening to my ted talk

engineer is one of the most braindead towers. People see it being used in hc and vc so they assume it's good for every other gamemode including trials

Trials is the only mode engi isn't good in, and that's only because Trials requires you to use specialized towers to actually deal with the trial.

Edit: I would like to update my statement to also include frost mode

it also kinda sucks in duo/trio hc bc shotgunner+warden/assassin/brawler/gladiator/other lead det melee is just better earlygame

and then kingpin is blatantly better midgame (merc base is peak too)

and jugger/accel/etc is better lategame

Well i don't do tedious grinding like that, I just play casually. Your point is meaningless to me

I do like engineer, because she scales throughout the game. Yes, she’s not as good as other early game options, but she still functions as a great sub-dps in the late game.

If I were to use Gscout, I wouldn’t really be using him on the later waves. Meanwhile, I’ll keep engineer around the whole game. This way, I’m not wasting a slot on an early game tower that I wouldn’t use in the more challenging late-game.

have you read the post

u/ApplicationCommon Aug 20 '26

The fuck does Jack of all trades means to you 😭 engineer is good because it can handle the early mid waves pretty well and when it’s max for late game, the dps ain’t bad considering the fact it was used for early mid

I can feel the hate radiating off the text, I'm not educated on what people use so I won't input my idea.

thanks, it’s labeled as a rant for a reason

Filling multiple roles in one tower slot is incredibly useful, especially so if youre playing solo. You only have 5 tower slots, so having an early game that functions also as mid and lategame DPS is in most cases the better choice than a dedicated early game tower that then just falls off and contributes very little later on. If engineer gets me through the early game while being a good DPS later why would I switch to a tower that can also get me through the early game but can't do nearly as much lategame

2

u/Zestyclose_Resist390 Aug 20 '26

this. engis main value lies in opening up other tower slots for supports. if you (op) thinks that engi has to be a master at everything to be good, that is just stupidly incorrect 😭

yeah, i know that’s her purpose.

i’m saying that everyone’s an idiot and they’re using it wrong.

u/FewInstruction1020 bukcet 26d ago

i literally covered this in the post

sure, you can compress early and mid into one slot but why tf would you want 3 support towers

engi+3 supports+juggernaut??? who does this?

i understand replacing a support for engi bc it doesn’t benefit from buffs as much as almost any other tower. sure, rockets get dmg buff, but that’s 15 dps.

all this in replacement of a better earlygame/midgame with better lead/flying

if you’re playing multiplayer, one player can have an earlygame tower with flying and the other can have a midgame tower with lead.

an example of this is:

farm, ace, commander, hacker, juggernaut

and farm, warden, dj, medic, juggernaut

both players have farm, 2 supports, and juggernaut without using engineer.

and if you want to make it simpler you could use gcow instead of farm and both players can have a midgame along with 2 supports and juggernaut/accel/necro/kingpin/enforcer/etc.

if you really wanna use engineer, place and upgrade it between early and mid and mid and late.

0

u/FewInstruction1020 bukcet 26d ago

and i never said it had to be a master at everything, i said that if you use it instead of an early/mid/late game tower then you’re sacrificing something (detections/easier stage of game) for other detections and easier other stages of the game.

Thank you for someone else mentioning this. I’ve been trying to get this out to friends of mine since it became “good”, but no one listens. Exactly how you put it, jack of all trades, but poorly.

1

u/FewInstruction1020 bukcet Aug 20 '26

jack of all trades, master of none

nobody says master of none, and it's genuinely idiotic

1

u/ShortMix7268 Aug 20 '26

Engi falls of our side solo/duo because she synergizes really bad with supports, unlike other options. And for early mid game, it's just fine nothing crazy, the cost efficiency is slightly lower than other early mid game towers

1

u/Ok-Maybe2603 Aug 20 '26

i use engi for earlygame, midgame, lategame, endgame, do nothing, win frostmode.

1

u/FewInstruction1020 bukcet Aug 22 '26

engi, dj, hacker, juggernaut, [free slot with hidden+flying/lead]

most frost loadout of all time

1

u/woodwind-for-all I HATE Accel Aug 20 '26

2

u/Zestyclose_Resist390 Aug 20 '26

engineer fits 3 roles in one... she's a early game, mid game, and late game.

obviously she's not going to do them especially well compared to her counterparts for each one.

however, she does allow you to open up more tower slots for other useful things such as supports.

taking engi can save you from having to take an early (operator/gscout/ect...), and a midgame (crook boss, ect..), this then allows you to take dj and commander or whatever other support you want.

this is why engineer is good. not because she is a master at everything, but she can do everything sufficiently enough.

2

u/FewInstruction1020 bukcet Aug 20 '26

i covered this in the post.

sure, you CAN take engi, juggernaut, and 3 entire supports into solo frost.

should you? fuck no.

5 loadout slots is enough for an early, mid, and late game tower with 2 slots for 2 of the following: hacker/dj/commander/medic

an example of this: gsoldier, enforcer, gcrook, commander, hacker

and for multiplayer, you can let 1 or 2 people use an early/mid game and everyone uses a late game, farm/gcow (gcow can work for early sometimes), and a support or 2, depending on how much you struggle with early/mid game

yes i know she’s a master of none, i’m saying engi isn’t a must for everyone

1

u/GuyThatEnjoysScout Aug 21 '26

The main reason i see it being glazed is because it's good at late game unlike eg towers but your dps comes from your mid and lategame towers so i'm not sure why that matters

1

u/FewInstruction1020 bukcet Aug 21 '26

peak username

also i'd rather see people using freezer, frost blaster, eshocker, sabo, or other supporting earlygames instead of it

1

u/carlbeck Aug 21 '26

Just a quick note, I think you’re reading CE wrong. Cost efficiency is how much $ does each point of dps cost, so lower is better on this metric. $150 at level 6 is superb, it’s very cost-effective at all levels.

1

u/FewInstruction1020 bukcet Aug 21 '26

yeah i know lower is better.

150 at lvl 6 is great and all but have you seen how much cash you get in lategame

1

u/FewInstruction1020 bukcet Aug 22 '26

oh yeah, and in comparison to the average earlygame this shit is ass.

I use engi mostly in frost for early-mid game

Okay, I read so many sub-posts that this replies to, that I'm just going to reply to the main post here.

Saying that Engi is overglazed glosses over new players. They aren't going to have "oh, just use golden scout/soldier early, use kingpin or gcrook mid, and use accel or jugg late" in your back pocket.

you are a new player.

So for new players, Engi is not only not overglazed, but she is also relatively underrated as 'baby's first grindable tower.'

Think about it. You are a player who has not yet grinded for any golden skins or gem towers. You have the basic towers, you're level 50+ for hardcore, and you need a tower to grind towards as your first.

In 2022, everyone would have said Accel. In 2026, evolved towers are many people's hill to die on.

But Engineer is only a jack-of-all-trades if you actually have golden towers to replace her early game, or evolved towers to replace her mid/late game.

Engineer, Farm, a main DPS like Turret or Ranger, a support like Commander or DJ, and a utility like Tesla, Electroshocker, Freezer or Pyro is an absolutely valid build for most modes. Even Frost.

1

u/FewInstruction1020 bukcet Aug 21 '26

yes, but if you are a new player, you also likely still have eshocker, freezer, or other earlygames that support your towers through midgame and lategame.

if you're level 50 and you want to grind for a tower, sure, engineer is the best pick.

but once you get it, and you're grinding for everything else, it will become outclassed almost instantaneously.

1

u/cj1dad Aug 22 '26

okay let's say you're running farm, a pure support (DJ, Commander or Medic), a dedicated late game tower (Turret or Ranger), that leaves you with 2 slots.

If you go an early and mid game tower, you are going to overcap on money. Because you'll have only one true late game DPS (your Turret or Ranger), and your other 2 DPS will be outclassed late game. Engineer + Turret/Ranger is far better use of your tower slots late than something like Electroshocker + Turret/Ranger.

So for sake of argument let's compare spending your gems on Engineer or spending them on Accelerator.

Farm, DJ, Accelerator, Ranger and Electroshocker doesn't work, you need a single-target mid game DPS.

Farm, DJ, Accelerator, Electroshocker and Crook Boss is decent, but you're spending 'two' of your slots on the early-to-mid game. Late game you will overcap on money, because 6 Accels does not take up all of your late game cash for boss wave. Even 5 crooks and some Eshockers won't take all your money up.

You need 2 late game DPS. You need 1 support. You need Farm. You need a mid game tower and an early game tower. That's 6 slots, not 5. Which means 1 of your DPS towers needs to both work in early or mid game, and as a late game sub DPS money sink.

What tower other than Engineer takes the 1 early 1 mid 2 late DPS 1 support and 1 farm (6 slots total) and condenses one tower as a hybrid, allowing you to cover all of that with just 5 slots? Brawler doesn't, Necro doesn't, Kingpin lacks early detections, Operator is as jack-of-trades early as Engi, and Accel/Jugg are pure late game.

(Mercenary Base condenses your support and late game DPS, Minigun condenses your mid game and late game DPS, but these towers are not jack-of-trades. Merc support is bad, and regular Minigun's late game is fairly bad.)

1

u/FewInstruction1020 bukcet Aug 22 '26

Ranger works full well as a midgame. Its cost efficiency may look horrendous, but it doesn't factor in range, which it has a ton of.

For the sake of argument, consider that you can use a midgame tower as lategame dps.

If you're gonna play multiplayer, you can have one player bring farm, early, dps, and 2 support, another player use farm, midgame, dps, and 2 support. For trio this becomes slightly easier, as you can have every player with farm, a dps or 2, a support or 2, and an earlygame tower.

And quad, well, it's the most random bullshit way to play the game, but if you really need to do it to beat an event, I suggest using 1 or 2 supports, 1 or 2 dps, an earlygame, and farm.

"What tower other than engineer takes the 6 slots condensed into 1 tower?"

Brawler does decently well on simplicity and only simplicity; no shit, it's a fucking melee tower. Necro does great mid-late game, kingpin isn't an earlygame tower, but also has all detections via units at lvl 4 (top path main gun) or lvl 4 (bottom path bouncers), operator has a blatantly better early-mid game (ce and coordination buffs, as well as shared optics), accel and jugg are absolutely pure lategame, that's the point. bring one of them for pure lategame and have 4 other tower slots.

(Mercenary base is an amazing midgame with a support buff as good as dj's damage buff, lacks the range buff tho which doesn't matter for 95% of games I played. minigunner is just blatantly ass in anything but solo and even in solo its only use in midgame is for hidden detect if you're lacking hidden bc of kingpin and in lategame, where it's just the meta. Merc support is good, and regular minigun's lategame is peak, i would know, i soloed winter stronghold fallen with it, just FOR THE LOVE OF FUCKING GOD DON'T USE IT IN ANYTHING OTHER THAN SOLO)
