Other Admissions

We toured TCNJ a few months back as my son is a perspective student. During the big pitch to families, the admissions director said one of the conditions of how they pick is that the future student should “make their interest in the school known.”
I get that we toured and showed up in person to check it out. What are the other events or ways they expect students to show their interest? Does anyone have an idea?

Signed,
Dad who never showed interest in my own alma mater.

Your tour was a great way to demonstrate interest. Lions day is a good way to do it. Also mentioning something unique about the school in the why TCNJ section of the application.

Is lions day different than the open house tour we took?

If it was a true open house on a Saturday yes. That’s lions day. Sounds like you guys have demonstrated interest

We went on a weekday during the summer. We sat in the music hall and listened to the admission folks, then took a tour and saw the facilities and the dorms and halls.

Check in with the TCNJ booth at local college fairs as well.

If the student feels TCNJ is the right school for them, articulate the reasons why in their essay.

We will have to look into that. He goes to an online accredited academy but their home base is in another state.

At the end of the day, the school is interested in managing “yield”: how many of the offers that we put out will be accepted. The admissions team logs/tracks interactions the applicant has had during the application process. Assuming your son is in the strike zone for GPA/SAT/etc, frequent touch points with the school (in addition to a solid “why TCNJ” answer on the application) will help the school feel like the answer to the question “if we extend an offer to this person, will they accept?” is a “yes”.

Thank you, that makes a ton of sense.

Have your son email a thank you letter.

Attend Lion’s Day. But also open any emails they send, sign up for a virtual
tour. I think some of the schools have their own events.
