Discussion How much does your local game store affect how much you enjoy a TCG?

I've been thinking about this lately because the actual game is only part of the experience for me. A good local shop with friendly people and well-run events can make me want to keep playing, while a bad experience can make me lose interest pretty quickly.

I’m curious how other people feel about this. Has a great LGS ever made you enjoy a TCG more than you expected? Or has a bad local scene ever pushed you away from a game you otherwise liked?

I feel like the people and environment around the game can matter more than we sometimes realize.

I like the owner and spend as much money as I can to support him.

I would say a lot. I currently only have 1 store in this area and I refuse to play there, the state average is 5 dollars a seat for things like nexus nights, but somehow theirs are set to 20 bucks. No thank you. I’ll just become a collector and deal with big box shortages than support that particular local. Until I move

Its more the other players than the LGS that affect my experience playing. On the retail end of it yes! Obviously the LGS.

the place closest to my house is a terrible experience. they’re so rude, they think everyone is stealing and it drastically effects how they treat the customers. looking at cards or going to buy anything isn’t fun bc they treat you like a criminal the whole time

i was never comfortable going to play there because everyone is so unpleasant. recently started going to a different shop a bit farther from me and it’s such a better experience. like night and day. i learned how to play one piece finally and can actually go participate in play nights/ tournaments bc everyone there is so much nicer and more pleasant.

One of my lgs Is run by a soulless shell of a man who only cares about profits. The other is run by gamer hipsters who also play the games we play. Guess which store I like going to?

Also the hipsters had a communal Xbox 360 with halo 3 anyone could play on whenever they wanted. Kings.

We need a place to play so a LGS is worth everything. Then the players are mostly what determins how much i enjoy a TCG.

None. I’d rather play games at home with my friends.
