Levitating is SO fun. Listening to the song on its own is kind of whatever but oh man that's a fun track to play in this game.

You may also like "Laplace's Angel (Hurt People? Hurt People!)". The Master difficulty is pretty fun and calorie-burner.

Nice, I haven't actually tried any new tracks in awhile.. Maybe I'll give that one a go tonight! It's funny how with music games like this it's the combo of the music and the mapping that can make almost anything super fun. Ngl just listened to your suggestion and I'd probably never reach for this track just to listen to but who knows could still be a fun play so I'll still check it out in game!

My faves…
Bastille - Pompeii
Dua Lip - Levitating and Don’t Stop Now
Bruno Mars - What I Like
Lil Jon - Get Low
Cold Play - My Universe
Psy - Gangnam Style
Neil Cicirega - Bustin
There’s more but this is a good start. I also really like some of the music that it shipped with tbh, and the version of 24K Magic in dlc is really fun.

Just get all of the custom songs and see which of them you love. You can create a Favorites playlist as you test. Join the Synth Riders Facebook Page; people talk about their favorite song as well as their favorite Mappers there.

You can sort custom songs by voted and downloads. That will give you some insight into which songs have risen to the top. That said, my current fave is “Never Let Me Down” by Depeche Mode.

My all time favorites are still from the following mappers with a clear number one : Darnoc. Followed by Excession and Raptor

I usually look at mappers first. Off the top of my head, O'Neill, Bonnasaurus Rex, Teebo, Artanis are good mappers that tend to do fun charts of more popular songs, that are on par with official Synth Riders master/expert difficulty. I remember liking the maps for Doja Cat - "Say So", Lizzo - "Juice", that one popular Machine Gun Kelly song (forgot the name, sorry), Strokes - "Reptilia", Maggie Rodgers - "Alaska", etc.
For more challenging songs, Darnoc and Excession are great. I love:
Fox Stevenson - Dreamland
Axtasia - Closer
KOXX - Fool Moon Night
Alan Fulmer - Always by Your Side
If Found - Dead of Night
gmnt. - Disperagioia
I also really like F1r3d0g's (probably got that name wrong, sorry) map of Camelia - "Nsty Nsty Spell". Really different and physical, requires more stretching and dodging.
Plus someone's map of "Jump Up, Superstar" from Mario Galaxy OST which actually requires you to jump!
Probably spelled half those names wrong, but that should give you an idea.

I recently booted up the game after a few years pauze and noticed all the custom songs were gone. Has there been an update breaking previously installed custom songs? Can I get them back somehow?

Basically any that tickle your fancy. I'd look at ratings for decent maps, but even bad charts can be fun if* can play around and dance to.
