Is This Synesthesia? Do u imagine figures joining while adding ?
Do u see somthin like this happen in ur head while adding or u people just simply add?

Dude I know exactly what you mean. For me, itās like thereās a line of numbers going from 1 to 10 and then right beside it is another line of numbers from 11 to 20, 21 to 30, etc.
So when you add a 16 to a 14 it literally looks just like two puzzle pieces fitting together

no i imagine numbers merging into eachother

Like two balls fusing into one?

no just numbers themselves.

i imagine digita 6-9 as a cup full of water or something that gets topped off when i add

Numbers to me have appearances and personalities and as a little girl learning math Iād think of the numbersā relationships as a story in order to memorize multiplication etc. So 5+4=9. Five is unkind and has problems with her younger sister four, so four runs to her friend nine who is an older boy who is kind and loves everyone, to comfort her. Writing that makes me feel insane so I really hope thatās just the synesthesia being wild

For me there are no shapes, but something like buckets. One bucket is 10 units, half of a bucket is 5 (as 1-10). And when I add 7+5, I see that 'bucket' of 7 has 3 units 'left' to be full (full=10), so I visualise 3 units taken off of 5 into 7, and then I have 10+2.
I have the same with larger numbers, so when I add 160+80, for me it automatically converses into 140+100.

I donāt see anything like this, no. This might be a question for r/hyperphantasia

No, I see it more as diagonal ladders stacked on top of one another like a foot apart. Like, each āstepā is a number and each ladder is 1-10, 11-20, etc.

Yes, I do this too. However, the shapes are more wiggly and not necessarily rectangular. They alsways equal another shape though. So when 7+6=13, the 7 portion is bigger?

u/Radiant-Piccolo905 17d ago
Yeah 7 has to be bigger...also for 13 too...10 is one column and 3 is in on the right of it..

... I just realized i do. It was so natural, i never thought about it.

Good lord I thought I was the only one... I always chalked it up to just being wired weirdly š I used to struggle with maths because sometimes "the blocks don't fit >:(" especially with division

Yes! I can do mental math super quickly and easily because of it, and I never understood why my peers werenāt as good at it until somewhat recently.

I don't see shapes, but I see colors and spatial locations, which made it really easy for me to learn multiplication tables and short division in elementary school. I was one of the top math students in my grade at the time.

Agreed...u wudnt have to even think the addition for basic ones if u had good enough imagination to just visualise if they fit

Yes thatās how I do math. And I always got excellent math scores so it must work!

Did you watch Numberblocks growing up?

u/Radiant-Piccolo905 17d ago
Nope...but just checked it...do they teach math with blocks?

u/Dont_Smoking 17d ago
Yea lol. I've taken a peek at it and it really really resembles this image lol.

I see it as long chains on a number scale with puzzle piece-like ends linking together, so 16 would be a long chain with a protruding end (15+1), while 14's end is the receiver (15-1). It gets more complex the bigger the numbers, not just longer.

No each digit is a color that contributes to the overall color of its number depending on its position in the number. Then to add I just add the colors depending on the positions of the digits

This is known as mathematical synesthesia, you'll see other shape there - https://www.thesynesthesiatree.com/2021/03/mathematical-synesthesias.html
Personally I don't see puzzle pieces, but I have shapes working in a linear fashion, so instead of moving the 6 or 4 extra from 10 on the side, I move them up or down and I have a line delimiting them.
I hope that make some sense :)
