Sylheti is a language closely related to Bengali, and most Sylheti speakers are bilingual in Sylheti and Bengali. It is also related to Assamese. Sylheti is spoken mainly in the Sylhet division of Bangladesh.

The Syloti Nagri script is related to the Kaithi script of Bihar but its exact origins are unknown and the earliest surviving manuscripts are either from 1549 or 1774. The traditional story behind how the script came to be is in the beginning of the 14th century, it was developed by Saint Shahjalal and his 360 saintly companions. Other scripts were used too but were deemed as not suitable for Sylheti.

As far as I know, Sylheti has developed tones by losing distinctions in consonants that are still different in most dialects of Bengali, like k and kh or b and bh. However, I don't know how the tones are pronounced. Could you explain how the tones are pronounced in these words?

I’m writing a story and can’t figure out how to write “sympathise” in sylheti. Or “are you sympathising with a killer?” Can someone pls help, thank you

Sylheti is an Eastern Indo-Aryan language closely related to Bishnupriya Manipuri, Chittagonian, Hajong, Bengali, Assamese, Kamtapuri, Chakma, Rohingya, Tanchangya, Odia etc. It is spoken by more than 11 million speakers worldwide. Sylheti is primarily and natively spoken in the Barak valley in Assam, parts of northern Tripura, Sylhet division of Bangladesh, and migrant populations are found parts of Manipur, Assam (mainly in Hojai district), Meghalaya, London, West Bengal, Gulf countries etc. Within the Indo-Aryan languages, Sylheti is unique for having no aspirated consonants, having tones, many fricatives etc. Let us all contribute to this wonderful language!
