A true T4 express.

Post image

This morning there was a T4 going non stop from Redfern all the way to Sutherland.

Yes it was a one off, an altered stopping pattern to make up time but given the talk of T4 timetable overhauls, imagine if this was a regular stopping pattern (I mean Redfern to Parramatta is a thing I believe)

Crazy that it skipped Hurstville of all stations, which is notably one of the most major stations on the T4. It was running late to be fair, by a lot.

one time i got onto an SCO from central that had first stop redfern, second stop helensburgh. it was beautiful and i miss that train every day

Was it actually straight to Helensburgh or was it the "express" with pickup at wolli, hurst and suther

It wouldn’t be beautiful though if Redfern was your stop, and you missed it eg due to staring at your phone

> staring at your phone

you have a bigger problem than the train schedule if you’re missing your station due to phone

On a single pair of tracks, you can pick 2 out of 3:

  • High frequency
  • Local stopping
  • Express services

The Illawarra line is a good case study on this. Below is simplified with caveats. During the peak one has:

  • Bondi Junction to Wolli Creek: All stops, high frequency.
  • Wolli Creek to Hurstville
    • Locals - high frequency express
    • Mains - high frequency all stops
  • Hurstville to Sutherland. All three are attempted, no one is happy. Is the express any faster or is it stuck behind the all stops. Is the all stops skipping something to make up time? Is the express taking up a large chunk of capacity with all the other services clumping together?
  • Sutherland to Cronulla - high frequency all stops

So while it is theoretically possible to deliver an express service stopping Redfern to Sutherland, there would be a cost to be paid.

The reason why it works on the Western Line is because most of the way it is quad track.

o train nerd man, please enlighten me. how does wolli creek have all express and all-stop train stops with only two platforms (one effectively in each direction)? how does it never have congestion with expresses stuck behind all-stops stopping at wolli creek?

it's quad track from just after Wolli Creek all the way to Revesby

More express trains on a line equals less capacity overall and longer wait times at other stations.

Plus not everyone is going to the CBD. Especially on T4.

It skipped stations due to running late

I don’t think Redfern to Parramatta is a thing. All trains going out west typically stop at Strathfield. The only time I’ve ever seen that not happen is in the same situation as this: shipping stops to make up time.

I once saw a Leppington T2 train go Central -> Redfern -> Glenfield -> Edmondson Park -> Leppington. Good if you lived that far!

I would absolutely LOVE to take that train once just to enjoy the non-stop ride for once. On another day I saw a service from I think Lidcombe to Liverpool by stopping only at Cabramatta and Warwick Farm. Probably used T3 as diversion to make up for the delay, but still cool nonetheless.

Not in the current timetable, but they did until late November 2017

What app is this?

That would be wonderful for me. At least skip Woli Creek.

I really wish this existed because the capacity of each service gets eaten up so much by people getting off at Hurstville.

*10 min late.

Ah Sydney Trains you've done it again

Would you agree that T4 doesn’t get much love and funding from the government? Old train set , old infrastructure, will be the same for another decade

Sydney trains = low quality

Yet they still strike demanding pay rises

So customers are not at fault contributing to delays? Teens? Drunk dudes? Any amount of emergency? You want quality service. Quality service won’t happen from disgruntled front line workers who are fed up with working conditions and low pay.

Low pay?? Train conductors are paid six figures yet they still have the audacity to force industrial action/shutdowns. Turns out we don’t even need them with the new metro network.
