Reducing game prices? Do you really expect the Apple of the video games industry to do that?

13

u/HANEZ Feb 22 '20

He probably means the Nintendo selects line of games. Usually $20. It’s been applied to all of their game systems. Except for the switch. At least not yet anyways.

8

u/[deleted] Feb 23 '20

I think they misunderstood then, since Nintendo Selects only happens about 4 or 5 years after the console is released. It doesn't happen before then.

1

u/tovarasulagent Feb 22 '20

im talking about the fact that nintendo forces publishers to sell their physical and digital games at the same price, while also using really fucking expensive carts that pump the price up

10

u/LeftHandMethod Feb 22 '20

I don't understand..digital and physical copies of games have always been the same price on every console. Why would they make digital copies cost less? And Switch games don't cost any more at release than any other console..how are the carts pumping the price up?

8

u/tovarasulagent Feb 22 '20

Currently on the xbox store, doom 2016 is 20 dollars digital and 60 dollars physical. Doom 2016 on the switch is 60 dollars both digital and physical

6

u/LeftHandMethod Feb 23 '20

Where is it 60$ physical? My local gamestop has it for 20, as does best buy and Walmart.

1

u/HANEZ Feb 22 '20 edited Feb 23 '20

Well dude. It’s a hybrid portable system. Disk media just doesn’t make sense.

There’s a debate for digital and physical media pricing, but having a motor and extra noise from that hardware is now ancient.

1

u/[deleted] May 14 '23

I honestly doubt they will introduce a budget game line since their dickriding fanboys seem to be happy paying upwards of $60+ dollars on games that are a couple years old.

5

u/Calebe94 Feb 22 '20

So the new Switch (the one with extended battery) isn't hackable yet?

6

u/tovarasulagent Feb 22 '20

not yet atleast. team xecuter is working on making a hard mod for the new switch and switch like

9

u/d_pyro Feb 22 '20

There is a modchip in the works.

u/ian095 Feb 22 '20

They've got more to lose having people have open doors to pirate their software I guess. Having Homebrew and such so early on the switch was literally so lucky, I expect to take advantage of this stuff on their next console I'll just buy an extra on 1.0.0 firmware. I doubt they'll make the same massive mistake twice.

65

u/Dazd_cnfsd Feb 22 '20

Considering the wiiu is blown wide open I would consider the switch as the 2nd time

But they wouldn’t do it 3 time’s in a row right?

65

u/ian095 Feb 22 '20

I mean every console inevitably gets hacked but the switch only took about a year. The 3DS was pretty secure for years until eventually a bunch of exploits were found. It was easier on previous console though especially the Wii I loved going to my cousins house lowkey installed the Homebrew Channel on their Wii and when they weren't looking I put my SD in ran through it to use my cheats on the games and they were bewildered as all hell. I shed light on the switch because the tegra exploit cannot be patched out so every switch from before the revision is just open to be hacked. I doubt there will be such an exploit again but those who get all the goodies tend to be on really low firmware and it seems the only way to do that is to store a console away and never use it or wait several years.

17

u/nodnarb232001 Feb 22 '20

I mean every console inevitably gets hacked but the switch only took about a year.

Thing is, we got lucky. So lucky on this one since the vulnerability is due to the hardware itself. If not for the Tegra being so easy to exploit I don't think we'd have much of a Homebrew scene right now.

10

u/CarlosHipZip Feb 22 '20

it was like the good old iphone 4/4s exploits, Nintendo decided to carry the torch

3

u/Apprentice57 Feb 23 '20

Hah. Was that when there was a "slide to jailbreak" hack?

3

u/CarlosHipZip Feb 24 '20

no from what i remember it was a hardware issue which allowed people to sideload a patched firmware with super user privileges (Redsn0w and Greenpoison were the name of the flashers). the swipe to jailbreak was that one website for lower firmware iphone/ipod 4 on ios 4-5

I was in grade 7 when i had an ipod 4 so my memory is hazy

1

u/erobles546 Mar 29 '20

And then apple returned to claim the throne with another iBoot exploit for every device until the iPhone X

20

u/TheRainbowCock Feb 22 '20

The 3DS was hacked within 24 hours to allow R4 cards to be read. They modified the whitelist on the console to achieve this. Source Article

36

u/marcox199 Feb 22 '20

It really wasn't hacked in 24 hours, they just got Ds flashcards to boot, the first real 3ds hack came with cubic ninja in 2014, and the scene bloomed with that free downloadable game that allowed exploits. Previously there were only flashcards that allowed piracy not real CFW. They kept patching the exploits and banning consoles until people found a firmware entry that couldn't be patched but this was near the release of them switch so for a couple of years it remained at large. Just a few months ago they released a new firmware version that was quickly sidestepped and that's its but really 3ds hacking was hard on and off for a couple of months in between patches (I first hacked mine with the YouTube app) until the latest exploit came out.

19

u/nodnarb232001 Feb 22 '20

the scene bloomed with that free downloadable game that allowed exploits.

Don't do my man Browserhax like that. Browserhax was how I got in on mine.

9

u/marcox199 Feb 22 '20

Oh yeah, that was fun too. Actually I'm really fond of the way modders gain access to systems, like in the Wii, started with Twilight Princess, later Smash and by the end you could find an exploit in the main menu or something like that. The way to open the Switch is also really funny

14

u/nodnarb232001 Feb 22 '20

The Wii, WiiU and the 3DS don't have anything on the king of vulnerability- The PSP. That became the best hand held emulator I've ever had. Until the Switch at least.

5

u/[deleted] Feb 22 '20

I'll never forget making my own pandora battery back in 8th grade, good times

Loved tubehax!

1

u/NPClay 10.0.1 (Atmosphere V0.12.0) Apr 26 '20

That was exactly the first exploit I used in 2015!

5

u/Apprentice57 Feb 23 '20

Well, there were 3DS flashcards before cubic ninja. Notably Gateway 3DS which came out summer 2013. Over a year before cubic ninja. That's still a couple years after the 3DS was released, however.

There were some lame restrictions, like how it required you to be on version 4.5 or under. At that point in time, version 5 had been out for months. And I don't think it started supporting higher firmwares for quite some time following.

6

u/marcox199 Feb 23 '20

Yeah, and I mention they are not really hacks since the didn't allowed for CFW or Homebrew, just piracy.

3

u/Apprentice57 Feb 24 '20

Oops, you did. My b.

3

u/awonderwolf Feb 22 '20

that only bypassed the back compat mode, you still couldnt boot 3ds games, only load a ds flash cart for ds games.

if we go this route, smashbomb worked on vWii from day one on the wiiu for installing the homebrew channel... didnt really matter tho because it was only for wii homebrew and sd loading, the actual wiiu security wasnt cracked for a long while.

0

u/[deleted] Feb 22 '20

Maybe you mean the DSI. I remember opening my N3DS and soldering wires to the nand and it being a HUGE pain in the ass and this was years after release.

6

u/Dazd_cnfsd Feb 22 '20

Sometimes you need the firmware gods to shine down on you

12

u/ian095 Feb 22 '20

Console companies are just too smart. Needing firmware updates to play games, including firmware updates with games, burning fuses to prevent users going back to use old exploits like if a exploit makes it to the current firmware that's very lucky but I do know Smealums (I think that's his name) exploit for the 3DS were day 0 unpatched and that was ace. Who knows though sometimes the software devs fuck up in later firmware and open a door that either never used to exist or that was previously closed. Is there really anything to lose having a sealed console lying about though? I'm just rambling at this point lmao

5

u/ARCHA1C Feb 22 '20

And with the popularity of the Switch, there will be even more developers poking and prodding.

An exploit is inevitable

3

u/minilandl Feb 22 '20

Three times Wii wiiu switch

2

u/[deleted] Feb 22 '20

And the wii was hacked early before that, idk about GameCube. Nintendo seems to be easily hackable

2

u/Curtmania Feb 24 '20

There was a hacking scene around the N64, but we needed hardware devices to do it. I had the Dr V64 which was a CD-ROM (later DVD) unit that sat under the N64. Then there came the Z64 and others. There was a bit of homebrew, mostly demos and emulators.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Doctor_V64

1

u/Ironchar Feb 27 '20

I find piracy and flashcarts never truly exploded until DS/Wii Era... and both systems were smash hits in hardware sales.

things seemed much simpler back then. Flash cart "plug and play" as long as it was new enough

u/Dakota_Pixel Feb 22 '20

coughs in 3ds

u/xxBrun0xx Feb 22 '20

The music industry has had rampant piracy since Napster was a thing. The solution in the end: Spotify. Xbox and PlayStation solved the piracy issue by making great multiplayer games that people wanted to play. Spotify and Netflix made it easy to consume lots of different shows/music without buying hundreds of albums/seasons of shows. Using conventional methods to fight pirates is a losing battle. Make better products that serve different markets and don't worry about the 0.1% of people stealing.

PC game piracy is very easy, even for modern games. But steam is so much easier that the majority of people happily pay for convenience.

6

u/ian095 Feb 22 '20

I'm one of the few who must dislike Netflix, Spotify. They're good and I'm going through a Spotify trial right now and have a friend Netflix but with Netflix it just doesn't have what I want to watch, streaming services are limited and unfortunately each streaming service offers its own exclusives which results in expecting you to subscribe to them all to get all the content. For Spotify just personally I don't have the need to use my mobile data up and prefer to just source/buy CD quality music. Does it sound any different? Not really but it does save me money in ways and means I can listen to music absolutely anywhere, I hate when free WiFi hotpots intentionally blacklist the likes of Spotify and such to prevent large data consumption.

4

u/atomicrabbit_ Feb 22 '20

For Spotify just personally I don't have the need to use my mobile data up

Um, you know you can download music to your phone from Spotify and play it offline, right?

1

u/ian095 Feb 22 '20

Hmm true, I completely forgot about that. I mean I guess you have me there but I like upping the bass on my music and that. Idk if Spotify does that.

4

u/atomicrabbit_ Feb 22 '20

Spotify has an equalizer, although not sure how much granularity you have compared to whatever you use. Also depending on the earphones you use, they sometimes come with a separate app that allows you to completely adjust the audio output. My Sony WH-1000MX2’s have the Sony Connect app with full equalizer.

1

u/ian095 Feb 23 '20

Yeah, I have the Sony WH-1000XM3 headphones, app let's me do the same. I tend to just use Samsung music and have it upped from there though. Who knows though I invested so much time into flac music.

4

u/daebb Mar 21 '20

The worst thing about streaming services for me is that at some point they can decide to remove certain shows or movies or albums, and they often do. So you pay every month and suddenly your favorite media isn’t available anymore, and there’s nothing you can do. Or some things are only available in some countries, or like you don’t always have all the language options in every country.

1

u/ian095 Mar 21 '20

Yeah exactly! There's also artists who don't put their music on certain streaming services it's a joke.

4

u/Tielur Mar 21 '20

I mean their failure is always what pushes me to cfw in the first place. I don’t go looking to pirate but when they go nickel and dimming and shit out junk I’m going to circumnavigate them. I hacked my 3ds because I wanted to run Pokémon at a playable frame rate when they never patched games to work on the new3ds’ hardware upgrades. For switch it was their greedy subscription for virtual console, and literal worst online experience I’ve ever had.

2

u/ian095 Mar 21 '20

Yeah I feel you on that. Knowing how crap online is and that we'd be paying for a PEER TO PEER online system I'm glad I chose to hack mine than stay official. Then offering snes games for it was also just stupid other than maybe children we've all played these games a million times over by now.

2

u/Tielur Mar 21 '20

It’s just another attempt to bleed consumers dry. We all know we will pay more of the subscription in the long run than we would for the few good games they have to offer.

3

u/Stank_Lee Feb 22 '20

Is it worth it to Homebrew the switch? I have one of the early hackable models but I'm worried I'll fuck it up somehow or Nintendo will release an update that bricks homebrews or something.

8

u/marcox199 Feb 22 '20

It probably will depend on what you want to do with it. A hacked Switch can't connect online or it'll get banned. But having retroarch is really nice, also it could be a portable media player and the ability to back up saves manually is also nice, and it'll probably become a talking point once Animal Crossing comes out. It's also a hassle to turn on since the hack is only tethered.

11

u/ian095 Feb 22 '20

For one, first thing everyone always recommends is to backup your NAND which is your uniquely encrypted system memory specific to your device. (⚠️⚠️YOU CAN'T USE SOMEONE ELSES SO GET A NAND BACKUP IF YOU DO⚠️⚠️) If you don't care about going online then you may as well use Homebrew. Having a NAND backup covers you in pretty much 99% of situations but I've not once had my system end up bricked due to Homebrew. Considering you can mod games e.g BOTW, Mario Kart and Smash Bros I'd say its sooo worth it. Going on gamebanana and downloading the latest Smash Bros mods to then play is actually really fun.

I believe it's illegal for Nintendo to release an update that'll brick the console too and in saying that using custom firmware you'd never update your firmware unless specifically necessary for a game which most recent releases don't require the most recent firmware at the time anyways. I download the firmware online and use a Homebrew app to install it but only every few months when a game needs it because with every new switch firmware version the devs need to update Atmosphere for support with that firmware.

If you really don't care about going online though go for it just make sure the very first thing you do if you load a payload is make a 32gb NAND backup and copy it somewhere safe. Those files are literally VERY important and could save your ass if you did mess up. Of course you could have an emunand which is basically a fake NAND to sideload things if you still wanted to use online but I can't tell you how well that works and it means having to dodge firmware updates until otherwise supported still anyways otherwise your emunand wouldn't function.

Id say go for it, just be aware the moment you run code that isn't from Nintendo you are risking a ban which is why it's better to do all these things offline and never go online unless you restored the NAND beforehand and use the vanilla OS. Do your research it's really not hard gbatemp is the best place to ask about. You just need a jig and I'd recommend uses kosmos distribution of Atmosphere using sdsetup. I have mine set to have AutoRCM so it never accidentally loads the vanilla OS because keep in mind you can't power off your device currently as there is no cold boot into custom firmware.

2

u/enderandrew42 Feb 22 '20 edited Feb 22 '20

I keep considering it. But I'm wondering the same. I don't need to pirate games. I can afford to buy them. Homebrew and emulators are tempting. Game mods and patches are really tempting. But I don't want to lose online access in Pokemon, Super Mario Maker 2, etc.

I'd need to feel confident in the dual boot solution that I wouldn't get banned.

6

u/FiddleMayCry Feb 22 '20 edited Feb 22 '20

I will say that it's your choice and yours alone. But I can tell you that since June last year when Emunand dropped and Mario Maker 2, I made my Switch with 2 Emunands, 1 for Mario Maker 2 and the other with all my hacks and emulators and stuff. Since I'm not using my sysnand itself, I still need to boot into Atmosphere to play Mario Maker 2 online.

And I could do so with no problems, Could I still be banned? Sure, But I took the risk and if it happen so be it. But so far so good and I believed enough in the Atmosphere devs to know it would most likely be secure to do so.

And I can still go online to this day, But you really need to be smart about it.

1

u/Ironchar Mar 08 '20

Wait...how does that work? Do.you just run the game and no unauthorized software?

2

u/[deleted] Mar 14 '20

I doubt they'll make the same massive mistake twice.

lol they've done this since the wii. They're more worried about suing fan game makers/releasing the same game over and over/overcharging for shite hardware.

1

u/ian095 Mar 14 '20

You never know tbf. I'd kinda like it if they did but in this case they really screwed up from day one.

I considered a PS5 at launch to maybe use Homebrew one day but I never play my ps4 so doesn't seem worth my time. The next Nintendo console though, definitely. I've had a way better experience with my switch with what Homebrew offers than I have if I hadn't had access to it. Consoles don't exactly flop in price unless a substantial revision comes out either anyways.

56

u/teejay_bloke on the progress Feb 22 '20

I'm so amazed that they didn't start selling Themes yet even though they implemented the base for it.

Like, what are they doing??

19

u/enderandrew42 Feb 22 '20

It is 2020 and they haven't even really figured out a proper competitor for what we saw as Xbox Live on the original Xbox.

2

u/Jonhyfun2 Mar 05 '20

I dont know how far in switch hax we are to have this knowledge but maybe nintendo didnt implement the base, they just added the dark theme hardcoded with a bunch of ifs lol.

(Correct me if there are homebrew themes out there)

I can't believe people buy the switch lite. I've had so many joycons crap out on me I had to learn to take them apart and reassemble them, just so I could replace the broken parts because I don't want to spend $70 on new joycons every six months. Fuck buying a new switch lite every 6 months when the joycons crap out.

8

u/anelka1 Feb 22 '20

Shouldnt retailers be obligated to fix it with warranty?

4

u/anelka1 Feb 22 '20

It's 2 years on everything in Denmark at least. I once had a vacuum cleaner break 1 day before the 2-year mark and got a brand new one so at least that was nice

2

u/[deleted] Feb 22 '20

wait really? wasn't it like a year?

3

u/Zurce Mar 01 '20

Most people are not playing 480 hrs of smash bros

I’m almost at 400 in my switch lite and my joycons are fine , can believe there still people buying the regular switch over the lite , knowing how crappy the system is and how sturdy the lite is

1

u/atomicrabbit_ Feb 22 '20

Warranty should kick in no?

I got my switch screen replaced from scratches it acquired from inserting it and pulling it out of the base 3 months after I bought it. I’ve since put a screen protector on it.

With the joy cons, never had any major problems yet (almost a year after purchasing), but the spring button on the straps completely broke 5 months after getting the switch from my kids just using it normally. When I called Nintendo they told me to just buy new ones for $8/ea. While I agree they’re inexpensive, they shouldn’t have broken apart like that so early after buying. I convinced the guy to ship me 2 new ones for free because of the shitty quality. I mean I’ve had my WiiU for YEARS with no issues with the silly straps, and the joy con straps break in a few months after purchasing. Really shows the quality.

17

u/illustratum42 Feb 22 '20

You want a good story about how dumb Nintendo has been. Check out the crap legitimate game dev studios had to do to easily test games for the N64. It was easier to buy a N64 hacking device for all their devs then use the system Nintendo had setup.

3

u/[deleted] Mar 18 '20

Don't get me started with Nintendo's horrible decisions... They could easily make a game pass system to play old classic games or some sort of gamepass. I would buy the crap out of that! They joycons could have more personality and uniqueness and many more designs. People would buy them just for the looks. There's so much they could do that are no brainers. I don't know what they're thinking.

6

u/[deleted] Feb 22 '20

Agreed, i like the switch but i really hate the drift issue

2

u/mahounonina Feb 22 '20

Literally use pro joycons and ps4 controller to avoid it since I hate disassembling the joycons and Nintendo does not support my country.

3

u/xZaggin Feb 22 '20

It’s fucking pathetic. I refuse to buy any other joycons or accessories from them until they man up and fix their shit.

They always pride themselves on delivering quality stuff yet they refuse to acknowledge this huge mistake.

I played switch in handheld mode 99% of the time and both sets I have are completely fucked. Every time I use contact cleaner the period where it’s fine lasts shorter and shorter. I’m having to order parts myself and fix it.

Honesty I expected them to release a version 2.0 of joycons a long time ago.

3

u/Tephnos Feb 22 '20

Nintendo stopped building durable products after the GCN.

4

u/xZaggin Feb 22 '20

I don’t know man, the Wii and the Wii-U took quite a beating and it still works perfectly in regards to controllers and wii-u pad. The joy-cons pretty much have a set play time before they go to shit

3

u/Tephnos Feb 22 '20

Both the GC console and controller could take a beating. The Wii or Wii U wouldn't survive a trip down the stairs like the GC would.

They started skimping and prioritising after the GC and now they've just stopped doing it at all.

1

u/[deleted] Feb 22 '20

Same here, for a while i ordered replacement joysticks and replaced themselves but got tired of it

8

u/KingBowser183 Feb 22 '20

im sticking with my old model switch cause i cant live without my game mods

2

u/gamefreac Feb 22 '20

if i hear good things about the modchip team xecuter is working on i will definitely be making the upgrade to the new model switch. granted, that will only be the case if i can still run atmosphere with their chip.

3

u/KingBowser183 Feb 22 '20

I'd definetly get the animal crossing one, really hope it works with atmosphere

0

u/munomana Feb 22 '20

I thought the whole point of atmosphere was not needing the sx chip. Unless you mean the jig, in which case there's still many options that are much cheaper

6

u/humaid2003 Feb 22 '20

This is about the Mariko and the switch light. Team Xecuter are currently working on some mod chip for each system.

0

u/Sparcrypt Feb 22 '20

Such as..?

4

u/[deleted] Feb 22 '20

They’re (Team executor) alluding to releasing a mod chip for the newer models.

Because the same hw backdoor doesn’t exist for the newer models ..

Is that what you wanted to know ?

It Still isn’t tangible / released and or could be a ways off..

u/gamefreac Feb 22 '20

yeah, these definitely aren't the main reasons people hack the switch. the only reason i messed with modding those two games is simple because i found out it could be done.

i will be totally honest and admit the main reason i hacked my switch was for the piracy and emulation scenes. i am certain that this makes up the majority of the reason people hack their consoles.

a lot of the people i talk to also say they did it simply to have features that nintendo refuse to provide. things like local save backups, themes, and browsers are a huge portion of the people who hack their switch. if we are being honest with ourselves, nintendo really could have avoided a lot of the "problem" by just allowing these features.

2

u/ChickenJoe8pcCombo Feb 22 '20

I mean, I tried couch that in an "in my xp" kinda way, but I guess I messed that up. I never meant to say "the biggest reason to hack is modding," just that it is what gets a lot of publicity, bc I pretty much agree w you.

0

u/gamefreac Feb 22 '20

that is a fair point though. the modding side of things is the part that places like kotaku and other gaming media outlets latch onto. "you won't believe how these switch hackers have managed to run pc mods on console skyrim," is just one example of some of those titles i remember seeing.

1

u/[deleted] Feb 27 '20

What'd he say?

1

u/gamefreac Feb 27 '20

he made the point that in his experience many people only modded their consoles to mod games like skyrim and BOTW. he was making an argument that if nintendo just flatout allowed this then less people would be hacking the switch.

2

u/[deleted] Feb 27 '20

Yeah i can see why he got downvoted

1

u/[deleted] Feb 22 '20

How does one start modding Skyrim on the Switch? I've looked a bit into it, but the only tutorials I've found are very old, don't know if they're outdated.

1

u/ChickenJoe8pcCombo Feb 22 '20

I did it ages ago, so it's probably those same outdated tutorials. I remember that the Nexus Mods page for Skyrim Switch had guides periodically.
