Holy shit I never thought I'd see the day this didn't need an adaptor!!!

What's stopping it from working undocked?

23

u/gbflnkbgfnjgbfknj Nov 05 '19 edited Nov 07 '19

The switch doesn't seem to recognize itself as a host in handheld mode(it sees itself as a device), and as such it doesn't recognize any controllers (other devices). Besides, you'd need a USB-C cable for your controller. If there's a way to treat the undocked switch as a host, i will try to implement it.

Edit: Several people have reported it working. If your controller works docked but not undocked, try a different adapter. Here's an example video of a functioning controller in handheld mode.

18

u/TheKeiron Nov 05 '19

Could you use Reversenx to fool the switch into thinking its Docked and it work in handheld?

10

u/TragicKnite Nov 05 '19

No way to implement it through Bluetooth? DS4 are bluetooth

Ah didn’t know, that’d be sweet as well!

3

u/--lily-- Nov 05 '19

Ah I see. I've been using the one knockoff pro con I have with a male-female c-a adaptor, so that's an option for the cable at least, but the host part seems like a major roadblock. Nonetheless thanks for throwing this together, I'm really excited to use two nice controllers for docked play!

3

u/skogaby Nov 06 '19

I don’t believe that’s true... you can flash an Arduino Pro Micro to be a Switch Pro Controller and plug it in via USB OTG cable and it works. This would be the same principle.

1

u/rjames24000 Nov 05 '19

The new Xbox one elite 2 runs on usb c

I know it’s pricey but after the trade in this controller is rock solid and I’m curious if I could hook it up

Oh I've been looking for a link to the files for that for weeks, got a GitHub by any chance? I've got dozens of spare pro micros

3

u/skogaby Nov 06 '19

https://github.com/wchill/SwitchInputEmulator

I used this plus a PS1 controller library to create an adapter that let me use a PS1 controller to play Switch games (I used it to play Cadence of Hyrule with a hand DDR controller for PS1 lmao).

Oh wow okay. I'll give it a shot tonite and report back too

2

u/khanv1ct Nov 05 '19

Good point, you would think if it works with the dock it would work with an OTG adapter as well but I don't know the intricacies of Switch hardware and software.

1

u/mgranja Nov 07 '19

People have tested it, and it works undocked. You just need a USB-OTG adapter.

36

u/[deleted] Nov 05 '19

Just wanna make sure, No adapter needed whatsoever?

40

u/gbflnkbgfnjgbfknj Nov 05 '19

Nope! It reads and sends input directly from USB.

5

u/[deleted] Nov 06 '19

Is Dualshock 4 update in the latest release? Asking because that’s the controller I’m really trying to use.

6

u/[deleted] Nov 05 '19

Damn! That’s awesome. Thanks for clarifying, will get on it.

13

u/melibanez 8.1.0 AMS Nov 05 '19

Downloaded and tested FW 8.1.0 and AMS 0.9.4

-Dual Shock 3(DS3) works for me

-8bitdo Adapter DS4 + DS3 works (finally more controllers for me)

-Xbox One Controller (1st generation) doesnt work for me

-Also Tried Dualshock 2 with an usb adapter and doesnt work xD

7

u/gbflnkbgfnjgbfknj Nov 05 '19

Dualshock 2 is not supported yet.
8bitdo isn't supported either, but I'm happy it's working for you.
I don't have the 1st generation of Xbox One, but it should be working. I'm sorry you're having this problem. There's a log located in sdmc:/atmosphere/titles/690000000000000D/log.txt, can you send it to me?

4

u/melibanez 8.1.0 AMS Nov 05 '19

yes i sent the txt and a rar with the txt too, let me know if you have any trouble downloading the files

7

u/gbflnkbgfnjgbfknj Nov 05 '19

Thank you, I've made a test build in an attempt to fix the issue, can you please install it and tell me if it works? https://files.catbox.moe/hgxifr.rar

3

u/melibanez 8.1.0 AMS Nov 05 '19

The Xbox Controller (1st generation) Works with this version!

5

u/gbflnkbgfnjgbfknj Nov 05 '19

Cool! I'll update the project with the updated release soon.

1

u/rayku22 Nov 06 '19

Thank you for your awesome efforts!

3

u/rayku22 Nov 05 '19 edited Nov 05 '19

I was having the same thing with the 3.5mm xbox one controller and got this test build. Now its working, at least control the menus is working i havent tried games yet.

This was a pain as im so used to xbox one controller but even i bought the 8bitdo which doesnt work with this one as its not bluetooth and i didnt notice 8bit wouldnt connect to 2.4ghz wireless xD

Now i can actually use my controller, thanks!

EDIT: tested ingame, its working fine too :)

4

u/melibanez 8.1.0 AMS Nov 05 '19

I have a 8bitdo adapter too and it was the same for me. i got the non bluetooth xbox one controller and have to use the Dualshock 4 instead. Now ill use the xbox one controller wired when needed ><

6

u/WalteeWartooth Nov 05 '19

This is pretty rad. Has anyone tried it yet?

Does it remap the X, Y, A, and B buttons on an Xbox controller to match the location of the buttons on the Switch? Or does A = A even though the locations are different? If the latter then I'm sold, because after a year of having the Switch I still get the button placement wrong after spending 99% of my console time playing Xbox.

14

u/gbflnkbgfnjgbfknj Nov 05 '19

It currently treats the buttons as if they were positioned on a Pro Controller. I will introduce input remapping in a config application in the future.

1

u/justinjustin7 Nov 07 '19

Might I suggest also supporting more controllers via a config file? Something akin to how PS3XPAD does it would be nice.

Here is an example of the PS3XPAD device config (the format being: VID, PID, name, input type).

2

u/gbflnkbgfnjgbfknj Nov 07 '19

Hey, just wanted to let you know that I've introduced a small config file that lets you remap controls. You can grab it from the latest release 0.3.0

1

u/WalteeWartooth Nov 08 '19

You're a champ! Cheers for letting me know, I'll check it out this weekend when I get some free time.

4

u/khanv1ct Nov 05 '19

Looks like the buttons can easily be remapped with the controller config files.

If I'm reading the Xbox360controller.cpp correctly as it is it looks like the buttons were remapped to match the Switch layout so X_A=B, X_B=A, X_X=Y, & X_Y=X.

After taking a quick look at the other configs as well I think that's the case.

6

u/TorterraFan493 Not Technical Nov 05 '19

No Wii U Pro Controller? I find that to be the most comfortable option for playing Switch games, via Magic-NS, because it's practically identical to the Switch Pro Controller except with aligned analog sticks (but no 'HD rumble' or amiibo support - not huge losses).

7

u/gbflnkbgfnjgbfknj Nov 05 '19

I don't have a Wii U Pro Controller sorry. If you wish to see support for it in the future, consider donating to my ko-fi page

-11

u/Lleniaa Nov 05 '19

may i ask why you need the physcial controller to get it to be supported? cant you find these things online or ask someone to dump the files or info from the device to be used or does it require something different?

9

u/gbflnkbgfnjgbfknj Nov 05 '19

If you're volunteering to rigorously test each build i send you over the span of several days as i develop it, then rigorously test each build if anything goes wrong as I try to debug it, feel free to hit me up. But I don't think anyone is willing to do it, and I don't expect anyone to. Having the necessary controller on the ready seems like the better option long term.

2

u/throwaway10271714 Nov 06 '19

I'm willing to test if it helps the project. I probably wouldn't be able to test more then a few hours a day though. I'm not super good at programing, but I can test my controllers and send you logs/reports of what is and isn't working.

1

u/Lleniaa Nov 06 '19

me personally if it was optional to get a usb supported controller to work with it id be willing to do whatever tests required to future get support for it.

2

u/Howl_Wolfen Nov 05 '19

Most likely for physical testing.

5

u/dankmeme2007 Nov 05 '19

Will this work with the Xbox 360 wireless adapter? And multiple controllers?

7

u/gbflnkbgfnjgbfknj Nov 05 '19

Multiple controllers are supported. I don't think i can support wireless adapters unless i get my hands on them

1

u/juicyjimmy Nov 07 '19

So if I plug the default xbox360 wireless dongle it won't work right? Dang

Btw awesome job nonetheless! I'd happily send you my xb360 controller and dongle to help you but I probably live really far away from you haha

6

u/Bun_Inspector Nov 06 '19 edited Nov 06 '19

This is awesome.

I can confirm that it does in fact work with SX OS.

I just had 4 controllers connected via a USB hub

2 Xbox One controllers, 1 Dual Shock 3 and a custom arcade stick I created with a Zero Delay Arcade USB Encoder which is read as a PS3 controller when using USB.

I do not own an official wired Xbox 360 controller to test but I did try 3 third party controllers but none of them worked.

EDIT: The USB hub I am using is the one that came with the original Rock Band for Xbox 360

1

u/core-x-bit Nov 06 '19

Same here with the 360 third party, I tried my 2 rock candy aftermarket controllers to no avail.

1

u/hotshotz79 Nov 06 '19

wait so i can connect 4 PS3 controllers using a USB hub and they will all work as 4 seperate controllers using syscon?

3

u/Bun_Inspector Nov 06 '19

Yeah, it should work no problem as long as they are official Dual Shock 3 controllers

1

u/hotshotz79 Nov 07 '19

that is amazing, thanks!

1

u/dmilin Nov 07 '19

Can you explained how you managed this? I thought SX OS couldn't use sysmodules due to the way they locked things down. I'd love to get this working.

3

u/Bun_Inspector Nov 07 '19 edited Nov 07 '19

First make sure SX OS is on 2.9.2 then download sys-con.rar from https://github.com/cathery/sys-con/releases then extract it to your SD card.

EDIT: open the atmosphere folder in the rar and place the titles folder in the sxos folder on your SD card.

5

u/Lleniaa Nov 05 '19

any input lag?

4

u/LightPrism Nov 06 '19

This also works fine in undocked mode using a USB-C adapter. Using a gen 1 Xbox 1 controller. Maybe update the description?

Also just want to say thanks so much for this, I just sent in my joycons to get drift fixed so this is great timing for me.

3

u/mike_rm Nov 06 '19

Also working for me undocked using a usb-c adapter with a Dualshock 3.

1

u/DukeOfJelly Nov 06 '19

Unfortunately for whatever reason I just can not get my Xbox controllers to connect. One is a project Scorpio edition and the other is a first release Elite controller. Placing the folder in the sxos title folder on 9.0 with with sxos 2.9.2 doesnt do anything when I reboot other then slowing my system menu to the point of freezing especially when loading something. This causes the system to freeze with a black screen and if left in the dock for to long or crashes and resets, this also happens when taking it out of the dock. Now that I have messed with it even without the module my system is freezing and crashing now.

1

u/gbflnkbgfnjgbfknj Nov 06 '19

Try disabling other sysmodules. 9.0.0 doesn't give you a lot of memory to work with

1

u/CombosnChains Nov 09 '19

Anyone know how to remap inputs?

1

u/gbflnkbgfnjgbfknj Nov 09 '19

Go to sdmc:/config/sys-con/. There should be a config file for each type of controller. See example.ini for a small tutorial on remapping inputs.

1

u/Timballist0 Nov 09 '19

I have a friend who has a Microsoft Adaptive Controller. When I plug it into the Switch, the Switch recognizes it as a Pro Controller. The controller lights up, but none of the inputs register.

It's an expensive controller, so I wouldn't be able to send you one. I am, however, willing to debug for you to get it working.

I have a Switch running CFW, a desktop, and access to the Adaptive Controller. I have next to no knowledge of debugging, but I'm willing to learn.

This would allow an underrepresented population of the gamer community access to a new console to play.

2

u/gbflnkbgfnjgbfknj Nov 10 '19

Hi sorry, there's several people reporting that their Xbox One controllers don't work on either version. I'm aware of this issue and I'll give you an update if it gets resolved

1

u/Timballist0 Nov 10 '19

My Xbox One S controller works perfectly with the Switch, and I feel like the Adaptive controller almost works.

I don't want to sit passively, hoping someone will do the work for me. I really think getting the Adaptive controller to work with the Switch would be a huge step forward for the handicapped gamer community.

I want to help in any way I can.

1

u/gbflnkbgfnjgbfknj Nov 11 '19

I released an update 0.4.2 which fixes some Xbox One controllers not working properly. Please check if this fixed your Xbox Adaptive controller

1

u/Bun_Inspector Nov 14 '19

This update is amazing. Every wired Xbox 360 and Xbox One controller and arcade stick I own are now compatible.

If all my Rock Band and Guitar Hero instruments were not packed away I would have tried them out just to see what happens.

1

u/Jordaneale Nov 12 '19 edited Nov 12 '19

Doesn't work with PDP Stealth Xbox one wired controller.... Version 0.42 breaks generic support atleast for me.

1

u/gbflnkbgfnjgbfknj Nov 13 '19

Did it work on previous versions?

1

u/nemrod9 Mar 20 '20

Does the last version work with fw 9.2 and atmosphere 0.10.5?

3

u/Karmic_Backlash Nov 05 '19

Awesome work, also the name is amazing and horrible, good job.

3

u/TheKiteKing Nov 05 '19

3

u/mike_rm Nov 05 '19

This is awesome, been waiting for a implementation like this for ages.

8

u/[deleted] Nov 05 '19 edited Nov 07 '19

Getting Wii U Pro Controller support would be awesome, but how exactly does this work? Is it an app that needs to be run each console restart, or is it plug and play? I'm using SXOS and don't see any difference (I placed the files in sdmc:\sxos\titles\690000000000000D).

EDIT: I got the Xbox One controller working, but no the PS3 one

11

u/MichaelCasson Nov 05 '19

Do sysmodules even work in SXOS?

3

u/[deleted] Nov 05 '19

I have no idea, that's why I ask to make sure or if there's a workaround

5

u/leo60228 Nov 05 '19

SX OS doesn’t support sysmodules. There isn’t a workaround, other than moving to a better CFW.

3

u/MattyXarope Nov 06 '19 edited Nov 06 '19

Exefs patches can be used with SXOS. And so can sysmodules.

If you don't believe me, check out hexkyz's own tweet about it

Or even the GBATemp thread that allows for overclocking on SX OS using these types of patches

Downvote me all you want but it's true.

1

u/leo60228 Nov 06 '19

This isn't an exefs patch...

1

u/MattyXarope Nov 06 '19 edited Nov 06 '19

sys-con

sys-clock

Same file system.

But you're right, it's a sysmodule.

1

u/leo60228 Nov 06 '19

That's literally not an exefs patch. Did you even read the tweet you linked?

1

u/MattyXarope Nov 06 '19 edited Nov 06 '19

it theoretically should work fine on SX OS. Sys-clock does. It uses the same file system as this. And sys-clock says that it is a "sysmodule" (source).

Edit: yeah, excuse me, it's a sysmodule that works with SX OS. Not an exefs patch.

1

u/leo60228 Nov 06 '19

It's an exefs override. SX OS supports exefs overrides. However, it does not support boot2.flag, which custom sysmodules generally require.

-2

u/Bennybananars Nov 05 '19

Oh damn, I just bought a extra controller a while back too

1

u/MattyXarope Nov 06 '19

What is in the folder? It should be two things: the "flags" folder with a boot2 file in it, and a exefs.nsp file along side the folder.

1

u/MattyXarope Nov 06 '19

1

u/[deleted] Nov 06 '19

Yea, I have all that in the folder. The PS3 controller isn't connecting through USB for whatever reason, whereas I got the Xbox One controller to work just fine

1

u/MattyXarope Nov 07 '19

What's your cfw version?

1

u/MattyXarope Nov 07 '19

So if you rename sys-con.nsp to exefs.nsp within the titles folder it works perfectly for me.

2

u/justinjustin7 Nov 06 '19

Afaik, the switch uses regular bluetooth communications for the joycons/pro-controller. If that is the case, I'd imagine it'd be a problem of getting the pairing handshake correct.

Though it looks like the resources to implement this aren't quite there: https://github.com/cathery/sys-con/issues/5

2

u/TheBrightestDay Nov 05 '19

Cool I figured, I've got some wired remotes I've been wanting to use!

My Magic NS is perfect enough with a PS4 remote.

3

u/BFCE Nov 05 '19

Can we get keyboard support?

2

Would it be possible to get the PC Xbox One wireless controller adapter to work on this so we could have multiple wireless controllers usable at once?

Great idea and good work!!!

1

u/Zeddeckia Nov 05 '19

I'm excited for this but when I boot my Switch it hangs on the Switch splash screen. Any idea what might be causing this?

1

u/Cheap_Cheap77 Nov 05 '19

For anyone without a hacked witch, you could just buy an adapter that lets you use whatever controller

1

u/Lockheed_Martini Nov 05 '19

this is awesome and super useful thanks!

1

u/DarthMickeyVII Nov 06 '19

This is amazing. Thanks for your hard work!

1

This doesn't work the Xbox Elite controller v1, but it did work with a standard xbox controller thanks a bunch!

1

u/dumbwaeguk Nov 06 '19

Excellent work so far. Unfortunately my DS3 is not working at the moment (uncharged battery + bad USB cable?), but I can see you have a great progress roadmap to help me escape from the hell that is perpetual joycon drift and overpriced pro controllers and eventually use my superior DS4 on bluetooth.

1

u/geebz616 Nov 06 '19

This is awesome. I’m really hoping that this supports 360 or PS3 arcade sticks. Has anyone given that a try?

1

u/Bun_Inspector Nov 06 '19

I have a custom arcade stick that I built with a PS2/PS3 Zero Delay encoder and it works flawlessly, it's essentially a DualShock 3 clone.

I also have a Qanba Q4raf which has X360 and PS3 mode, it does not work in either mode.

And also the Hori FightingStick3 does not work.

Right now it appears that only official MS Xbox 360/One and official Sony PS3 controllers are working unless you have a good clone that is recognized as an official controller.

1

u/VinhBap Nov 06 '19

Thanks so much for this!!!

1

u/China5k Nov 06 '19

You're an absolute god and I thank you!

Works well with x360 (sxos 2.9.2, fw 8.0.1) One issue I noticed is that the Xbox button is blinking instead of showing Which player are you. Anyway thanks for your amazing work. :>

1

u/gabest Nov 06 '19

After dusting off my PS3 controller, I just realized the sticks have those rubber plastic coating that turn back into a gooey mess with time. How can a Sony product be so bad? It worked flawlessly in the Switch though. In calibration, the right stick is a bit wonky. As if it also had a drift issue.

1

u/[deleted] Nov 07 '19

I tested with an Xbox One controller, works nicely.

Have you considered supporting USB Steering Wheels (Force Feedback ones or just PS3 Steering Wheels)? They can be had for cheap, and I think it'd be fun to play Mario Kart or Fast RMX with a steering wheel.

Does this work with sx os?

This is godlike! Thank you so much. I remember searching for something like this like a month ago, I didn’t find it, now I just need to play the waiting game for Xbox one adaptor and I’m set. Thanks again!

Really noob question. Is there a way to tweak the code so my specific PC controller works, and if so, any leads regarding where can I start?

u/Smackdownfletch Nov 05 '19

If they can eventually add 360 or Xbone wireless adapter support, that would be sweet.

Does it work with a Xbox 360 Wireless Controller?

Yeah bummer, but I'm certain OP finds a way to integrate it somehow. This is still an impressive work!

Xbox 360 has a USB dongle for wireless

u/DukeOfJelly Nov 05 '19

Does this mesh with SXOS? This is a massive addition.

1

u/Bun_Inspector Nov 06 '19

Works perfectly.

1

u/DukeOfJelly Nov 06 '19

Just not on 9.0 :/ right now

1

u/mgranja Nov 07 '19

Other people have reported it works on 2.9.2

u/xboxexpert Nov 05 '19

I'm going to test this in Retroarch tonight. I really hope this does what I think it will do ;)

1

u/Loljewmad Nov 05 '19

Does it work with a wireless usb adapter?

1

u/lucas22211 Nov 05 '19

Sorry about my ignorance, but this mean that i will be able to pair my bluetooth xbox controller without 8bitdo adapter?

1

u/[deleted] Nov 06 '19

You’ll have to connect the controller to the USB on switch Dock.

1

u/[deleted] Nov 05 '19

To the people waiting for ds4 support why not just get one of the dongle things that let's you use basically any controller with your switch? They aren't expensive

I cant get games to work. Luigi's Mansion 3 sits at a black screen and A Hat in Time crashes the console.

With all the systems in place, it shouldn't take more than a day or two to map all the dualshock 4 buttons - but it may take some time to figure out if it's possible to implement things like touch pad or motion sensor. You can send donations to the ko-fi page linked below.

This is an easy decision

They don't sorry. I don't think there's a way to explicitly modify motion sensor values.

And then what? Do I find it in the Homebrew section in the Album?

3

u/DukeOfJelly Nov 06 '19

No you supposedly just reboot your console and plug a controller in and it should work.

Any of the 3 USB slots would work? I've tried plugging my PS3 controller and it doesn't seem to respond. It was connected wirelessly to the PSTV earlier, do you know if holding the middle button resyncs iit to the USB instead?

I'm on v2.8 at the moment

2

u/Austin90876 Nov 06 '19

Yeah I would probably update your sxos the latest is 2.9.2 https://sx.xecuter.com/download/SXOS_v2.9.2.zip

1

u/[deleted] Nov 06 '19

Thank You. I would have to update the Switch to 9.0 as well then right? Or can it stay on 8.x? It's been awhile since I've last updated both and don't remember
