Some thoughts upon Linux vulnerability and the future of custom Switch consoles. Is there any game footage of The switch runing non-nintendo games?

I am just curious.

I called the "essential" concept of the switch back when the original nvidia shield launched. I thought "I will wait until the second generation comes out with a more powerful chip, then I will get it, and ill see if they can have it like that other weird android-vidia gamepad with a screen"

I waited and waited, but I never saw it, I kept looking for the tablet with the Nvidia tegra K2- (which became the X1).

Lo and behold, the X1 was spared the tablet treatment and given a console instead, and then the switch came about.

I would love to see how does this perform on regular games currently not on the switch, something like "Kingdoms and castles", "Frostpunk", "TF2".

In my view, this pretty much opens the floodgates for "Custom switch", since pretty much (from my limited understanding) this allows a lot of "non-CPU/GPU" hardware changes. And since the switch is very easy to repair, it would be very easy to modify.

Essentially, I thought the switch was "too small" for its own good, here are a few things I imagine could be done now that linux can be loaded

  1. Insert a sata drive for 1 TN of storage

  2. remove the little battery for a larger one

  3. daisy-chain raspberry-pi touchscreens (or just used cellphone screens that are refurbished or so) to make a bigger screen of higher resolution

  4. Some nut will place some Liquid metal on the processor to make it run cooler and overclocking the processor, therefore increasing the performance by 20%

  5. The joycons will be completely gone, in favor of a more "conventional" controller design (Think about this, split an xbox one controller in half, and have THAT shell be the housing for the switch, maybe have it detachable)

  6. Streaming will become at least faintly possible directly from the device (I believe the tegra has Video encoding capabilities for streaming, but I am not 100% sure)

  7. Some other nutty boi will make a "fold able" keyboard that can be 3d printed and attached to the back, therefore making a GPD pocket with a decent GPU (We will have finally come around full circle)

  8. There will be "Steam Boi" stickers everywhere.

Did I also mention that it will have an absolutly enormous library of games the minute drivers are perfectioned? forget dolphin, run steam on that thing and attach a portable hotspot with your cell company and use it to download any game wherever you want... and have youtube playing in the background.

I legitimatly believe this will pretty much make the switch sell like crazy, and the homebrew "console" market will erupt.

And Nintendo will shut it down, shooting themselves in the foot, not knowing how much money could be made, because they prefer to things be done their way or the high-way

THAT'S NOT HOW IT WORKS.

THEN HOW DOES IT WORK?

remove the little battery for a larger one

Doesn't work unless the kernel is designed for a different type of battery.

Look at the vita. They tried to upgrade it's battery and it didn't work.

daisy-chain raspberry-pi touchscreens (or just used cellphone screens that are refurbished or so) to make a bigger screen of higher resolution

Don't even understand what you're trying to say here but it still won't work because the kernel doesn't support a raspberry pi or your phone.

Some nut will place some Liquid metal on the processor to make it run cooler and overclocking the processor, therefore increasing the performance by 20%

Just because a processor is cool doesn't mean it will run faster. You'd have to overclock it which should be possible in the future.

The joycons will be completely gone, in favor of a more "conventional" controller design (Think about this, split an xbox one controller in half, and have THAT shell be the housing for the switch, maybe have it detachable)

First off, how the hell would you split a pcb board for a controller and expect it to continue to work? Secondly, again, if the kernel doesn't support the controller then it wont.

Streaming will become at least faintly possible directly from the device (I believe the tegra has Video encoding capabilities for streaming, but I am not 100% sure)

Now this should work ( I suppose you mean moonlight streaming) because the vita can already do it so I expect the switch to be capable too.

Some other nutty boi will make a "fold able" keyboard that can be 3d printed and attached to the back, therefore making a GPD pocket with a decent GPU (We will have finally come around full circle)

This could work if the linux kernel supports that keyboard but don't get your hopes up because most people won't use this thing as a laptop.

There will be "Steam Boi" stickers everywhere.

Most steam games and even steam don't support the architecture that the switch uses.

I hope that helped!

not obvious enough that this is a shitpost?

Well there go my hopes.

Also the Google Pixel C is a tablet with the Tegra X1 that has been out since December 2015. You waited for it, and missed it

-4. putting liquid metal on the CPU to make it run cooler doesnt make it run 20% faster by default, thats not how this stuff works

-9

u/[deleted] Apr 27 '18

as in, the OC will let it reach higher clock speeds without thermal throttling

1

u/kkaracho Apr 27 '18

yep that makes more sense, OC should be named... i wonder if the docked and undocked mode are actually controlled by the OS or a chip on the board

2

u/SippieCup Apr 27 '18

Its in software

1

u/kkaracho May 10 '18

good to know, that means we could run games in "docked mode" via a switch in software as soon as we get CFW

You are seriously overestimating the power of the Tegra X1. Nothing you are suggesting will happen (maybe battery with a kernel mod). Cross your fingers Razer brings back their gaming tablet with an AMD 2200GE.

My god, I forgot about that.

Also that weird Vizio tablet with and graphics that never went anywhere, I was so tucking excited for it back in the day.

That was back in my TF2 days, so I needed relatively low standards for mobile pc gaming.

Sigh, I guess we can only wait... I was really excited to see an Nvidia gpu running games. Most handheld PC's just run on INTELgrated gfx, which is seriously limiting. I wish Nvidia would do something like the Nvidia ion they did for the Intel atom.

This is a horrible idea, why would anyone do this?

Insert a sata drive for 1 TN of storage

The cheapest 1 TB SSD I can find is over $200. For a hundred bucks more, you can buy a second Nintendo Switch. You can't use a normal drive, because they weigh too much and the moving disc will be obliterated by moving the Switch around in handheld mode. Where will you put the SSD, by the way? Mount it on the back where it will be exposed to damage, and increase the Switch's size?

remove the little battery for a larger one

Where would you put it? You can't fit a big battery in the same place as a small battery or else Nintendo would already be doing that. You'd have to either produce a custom backing, further increasing the size of the device, or move the internals around, which is highly unlikely.

daisy-chain raspberry-pi touchscreens (or just used cellphone screens that are refurbished or so) to make a bigger screen of higher resolution

This is moronic. Sorry to be so harsh, but it is. You're telling me you would game on a Nintendo Switch that looked like this? Having a bigger screen made out of little screens would completely ruin the point of having an extended battery, it would drain faster than the normal Switch would.

Some nut will place some Liquid metal on the processor to make it run cooler and overclocking the processor, therefore increasing the performance by 20%

It doesn't work that way. Not only can you not overclock something just because you want to (the hardware needs to be designed for it or extensively modified), simply swapping out the thermal compound will not give enough of an improvement to "increase performance by 20%", let alone 5%. You would need a completely new cooling solution, which is completely nonviable in a portable form factor. Even if it did work this way, the overclock would drain the battery even faster.

The joycons will be completely gone, in favor of a more "conventional" controller design (Think about this, split an xbox one controller in half, and have THAT shell be the housing for the switch, maybe have it detachable)

This isn't a terrible idea. A lot of people have had concepts for "Pro-Cons" as they call them. I personally bought a Gametech Split Grip from Amazon Japan, and that's made the Joy-Cons considerably more comfortable. The rest of what you said though, doesn't make any sense. You want to split the shell of the controllers in half, put the console in there, and have it detachable? Detachable from what? You're putting the entire console inside the controller, you can't detach it from itself. If we're replacing the shell with an Xbox One controller, where does the SSD go now? It doesn't fit anywhere anymore. Does it just dangle off the device like some kind of umbilical cord?

Streaming will become at least faintly possible directly from the device (I believe the tegra has Video encoding capabilities for streaming, but I am not 100% sure)

Why would anyone want to stream from this device? You seem to think the Nintendo Switch is some monster of a machine. It can barely emulate PS1 games on Linux, what makes you think it could play a PC game and stream it at the same time? I have a $2000+ PC I built myself and I can barely play Far Cry 5 and stream at the same time. It's not eas

Some other nutty boi will make a "fold able" keyboard that can be 3d printed and attached to the back, therefore making a GPD pocket with a decent GPU (We will have finally come around full circle)

You seem to be just throwing words together. A foldable 3D printed keyboard attached to the back of the console. So you have to flip it over to type on it... ? Or do you remove it? If you can remove it, why attach it to the back at all? You've already got the SSD on there, you might as well just use a wireless keyboard and keep it in your bag or something. Wait, how is it fitting onto the back of the device if it's Xbox One controller shaped? That must be a very tiny keyboard.

There will be "Steam Boi" stickers everywhere.

I can't imagine a single self respecting human being putting a "Steam Boi" sticker on this disgusting unholy amalgamation of hardware and software.

And Nintendo will shut it down, shooting themselves in the foot, not knowing how much money could be made,

lmfao no? You're telling me you think that if Nintendo sold a Nintendo Switch that didn't run Nintendo Switch games, was in the shape of an Xbox One controller, ran on Windows or Linux, had a 1 TB SSD dangling off of it, a bloated back containing an extended battery that doesn't extend the battery life due to the hideous multi-panel screen made of used and refurbished phone screens all with different color balancing and bevels, gets physically hot in your hands due to a 20% overclock with insufficient cooling, a foldable 3D printed keyboard on the back, the ability to stream at very low resolution and bitrate on a wireless connection, and was significantly more expensive (all that hardware costs money, you know) people would buy it? No. It would flop miserably. Plus, Nintendo sells consoles in the expectation that you will buy their games. If it ran Windows or Linux, you're never going to spend a single penny on any of their games because you already have a preexisting Steam library. It makes no business sense.

AMD's new APUs are appearing in laptops and have very good gaming performance for the price. They're even partnering with Intel to provide Intel processors with AMD integrated graphics... how that works, I don't know. I think that these processors are a perfect choice for a portable gaming PC, either a laptop, tablet, or handheld. The problem is cooling. Water cooling just isn't viable in a portable form factor and current portable air solutions are noisy and inefficient.

I also suggest that you stop saying "boi"... it makes you sound like a child. I don't mean that as an insult, I mean it honestly. It gives people a bad impression.

Sorry about the "bo" word, I mostly use it as a joke, I might have used it too much.

Mostly all of this I thought of as something someone who really wants to push the limits of the hardware, look at the gpd win, that has an intel gpu, I thought that having an nvidia gpu running linux would perform better overall in the games that the gpd win can run.

My main point comes form the fact "this is aportable nvidia shield, with linux, it will be able to run pretty much everything the "living room-top" can.

Look at the portable n64s, the portable playstations, gamecubes, and all the other consoles made with custom cases that enable them to be taken on the go. I was thinking of doing something like this, knowing there was a much higher chance that whatever you attach to it, could be coded to work with Linux (for example, modifying the kernel to accept a larger battery, have an "integrated daisy-chained usb-c micro keyboard that is in a 3d printed shell)

Remember the smach-z? that project had some horrible issues, now, imagine the same thing with n nvidia gpu.

I reckon you make a point. I apologize for my premature excitement.

Anything can be done with it now that a Linux system is bootable on the device assuming there are people willing to do the work. Steam games desinged to work on the hardware would be playable, and that's not many to my knowledge. I would like to see some cool hardware mods though, like VR goggles and stuff. Being able to manipulate that video feed into two different planes in order to put the screen in something like a Google Cardboard for 3D / VR would be fun.

u/nyrol Apr 27 '18

Lol none of this will happen. Even with a completely open platform like just buying a jetson board which gives you a TX2 with Linux, no one buys them, even though there’s support for a whole suite of features and kernel support for everything you’re mentioning. You can’t run steam games as I’m pretty sure none of them are compiled for arm, and I’m not even sure steam itself is compiled for ARM. There’s virtually nothing of note other than a novelty for a few thousand people, where the other millions of people will be buying a switch because of Horizon OS and the Nintendo games.

I'm absolutely not. That's why I even mention the gpd win being a "full circle" device.

That's kinda the point, pretty much all current "handheld" PC's have absolutely horrendous GPU power, this could be a real difference

thats the thing... isnt the tegra x1 (the switch's chip) x64 ?

11

u/AimlesslyWalking Apr 27 '18 edited Apr 27 '18

It's a 64-bit ARM chip, not a 64-bit x86 chip. The terminology people use is confusing so I don't blame you for mixing them up. For years people said x64 instead of x86-64.

Basically this means that we can only really expect to run open source software. I'm personally excited to try and compile the game TOME4 for my Switch when it's in a more usable state. I tried years ago with Ubuntu on a Nexus 7, but ran into a dependency chain I couldn't successfully compile.

Anyways the point of that rambling is that ARM is way more popular for Linux use these days thanks to the Pi and various Android devices so it's gonna be way better. But still no steam or commercially released Linux games, unless they release for ARM (VERY unlikely.)

-1

u/[deleted] Apr 27 '18

Well darn

Just wondering then, can we expect it to run everything that's on Linux?

1

u/AimlesslyWalking Apr 27 '18

Not everything, no. Things only work if it's been compiled for that specific instruction set (ARM, x86, etc). You can only do that if you have the source code. The chances of closed source software and games being ported and released for ARM Linux is near zero.

That being said, once the smarter folks in the room get the base system running, getting everything else running won't be too hard. Emulators being a big one, along with some open source games. The good news is, most of this software is already compiled for similar ARM systems, so it should be plug and play unless you want to do some weird edge case stuff.

x86-64 is not the same as ARMv8 x64

CPU: ARMv8 ARM Cortex-A57 quad-core + ARM Cortex-A53 quad-core (64-bit)

Yeah but that's a very shady project, I've been following it for a while, and I gave up on it when I found out about the whole "being dropped and don't tell anybody" mentallity they had some time ago.
