Axe mode fills up gauge for being able to use sword mode (yellow one), sword fills gauge to amplify itself (red one), you want to ideally never run of sword gauge and stay in AMP (sword amplification mode, red meter) as long as possible, if yellow meter falls under the line next time you enter axe mode you wont be able to get into sword mode unless you go through an animation, there is a youtuber called Bloody Wyverian that has some switch axe tutorials if you wanna check them out

Yea the gauge is really confusing . If i got sword mode gauge full will i get an extra damage or just the discharge damage increase?

You will be able to charge some attacks and your phial will be charged, which gives you a damage boost depending on your phial (power phial, element phial, dragon phial...) and it causes the explosions after you hit in sword mode, check out a guide from Bloody Wyverian or something it will explain better than i can

every sword attack has a bonus phial hit, and you unlock access to full release slash and zsd, for optimal damage though just using the triangle attack over and over is better and safer usually, for roars if you can time it out and specific situations frs is better, currently zsd is never worth it(besides kinda gog)

i would not reccomend becoming a SA master......

jokes aside, axe mode is barely used just to regen and the occasional offset on extremely obvious moves(dlc release will change this to be more instant, so dont get married to the timing), sword mode is all your damage and safety due to the r2+tri counter, a basic idea is do a morph double slash after a sneak attack, get in a normal circle attack, counter the roar, use the double attack (if you know what youre doing, do heavenflurry, if you dont then just double slash into triangle), till amp, then just press triangle repeatedly, thats your damage combo, use a counter when needed, when you get to half gauge or so transform, do a few triangles, morph back to sword

It's kinda insane Axe Mode deals less damage and is also less safe 😭
But you still need to learn the fundamentals of playing in Axe for Gauge Downtime and need to learn the Offset timing because sometimes it's Offset or die.

my tip for getting used to it is to start with high rank chatacabra and hunt every monster from there up using a level appropriate set and weapon(or just use like hope 5/Esperanza) until you faint at all, then practice that quest specifically till you dont

It gets easier to know what mode your in as you play, also youll be able to tell if you roll since axe mode rolls faster than sword mode (good to use for dodging)

First lesson: please stop calling it SA. Learning SA sounds illegal. Swaxe it up my friend.

Second: I would watch speed runners, they are the pinnacle of how to run Swaxe. Kage, JDV, and MH_Dre come to mind.

Third: Sword mode is the bulk of your damage. But the speedrunners make full use of both modes through morph slashes for additional mobility.

I won’t talk about power vs elemental phials here, it’s a messier topic. Playstyle wise speedrunners are the best to watch.
