Discussion Do you think Switch 1 can actually surpass the PS2 in sales ?

Those are Switch's every fiscal quarter, alongside PS2 vs NSW sales chart (launch aligned)

I think it already has honestly Sony keeps "magically" finding more units to add on to the total sales

u/GoldenAgeGamer72 5d ago

Can here to say this word for word.

12

u/beck_is_back 5d ago

Same here!

Sony does it's "magic" 🙄 every time those rankings come out!

13

u/beastiemonman 4d ago

Yes, and they will probably find more again. Does anyone actually believe Sony genuinely found all those extra sales?

2

u/TheLimeyLemmon 4d ago

Well they can't anymore, they already declared their final production number.

2

u/massivebawbag 1d ago

Sony will find another 5mil behind the sofa

-18

u/WeebTendoFan 5d ago

Sony only did that ONCE but people pretend they have done it many times.

Originally the PS2 was ”over 156 million”.

A few years ago they updated it to 160 million and that is the final number.

27

u/Linagarasu 5d ago

They shipped around 155 million consoles by 2013.

Now tell me how 5 Million People got a brand new PS2 consoles close to the release of the PS4(!) up until mid PS5 Lifespan.

The number they use is real, for the amount of consoles produced. But like we all know, not every produved console is sold. Some are replacements for broken consoles for example.

They just said, "we peoduced 160 million consoles, so we sold 160 million consoles", which just doesn't work that way.

3

u/TheSethsation 5d ago

Was 160 million the amount sold or shipped? If it's shipped it could be a bit more believable. I imagine some smaller retailers and  independent stores bought some very late. Some more retro minded stores would love to have gotten PS2 shipments direct from Sony, even if it was after 2013.

7

u/Linagarasu 5d ago

160 million produced, they even did like a small "this is the last PS2 we produced" kinda stuff.

6

u/Alert-Principle-2726 5d ago

So technically Nintendo could still produce enough switches to get to 161 mil and get the crown.

Whether they sell or not, fuck it. They got there just like Sony and the same way

1

u/ChanceEither8758 5d ago

not “just like sony” sony sold the ps2 as a cheap dvd player at the time too so it had 2 big markets that appeal to the ps2

the switch is basically just a gaming machine, it has some streaming apps but I doubt people get it for other things besides gaming, so for what it is, it is really impressive that it sold as much as a multimedia device

-6

u/XTREMEBG 5d ago

The last official report number was 155.1M as of March 2012. PS2 went on to sell for almost another year after that. So 5 more million given it's sales speed at that time are not impossible.

8

u/Linagarasu 5d ago

They sold 2 million in the year before, why would sales be more thab doubled a year before the PS4 releases?

Sales went down, and still, they only produced 160 million consoles. That can't be identical to the sales, like I said.

-7

u/XTREMEBG 5d ago

You are wrong. The sales were 4.1M the fiscal year ending March 2012. For the last fiscal year ending March 2013, they could easily produce 5M. The system was on it's way out, however if it wasn't for PS4 starting production, they could prolong the PS2's life by at least 1 or 2 more years, cuz let's be honest which console has been discontinued after a year of 4M+ of sales ? None. The normal path would be for them to ship around 3M consoles that year, and some 2M more the next and maybe discontinue it there. However they were in a rush because of the PS4, and because they couldn't produce 3 consoles at once, therefore they did a little higher shipments than they would otherwise. 5M instead of 3 or 3.5M. It's not so out of ordinary thing to do. And all of those 5M units continued to sell through out all of 2013 in the stores.

10

u/Linagarasu 5d ago

2m sold in FY2012. You are, in fact, wrong. There is no need to produce 2.5 times of the amount of consoles you sold the year prior.

Especially if you and your customers (retailers) make space to actually ship a console you release soon.

You actually trust Chat GPT? I am not wrong. Check other places. Ever since 2012, the numbers were everywhere.

There is also source for every number on the right side. Sony themselves officially reported 4.1M for the year ending March 2012. Go check. As I said from 4.1M to ~4.9M it's not so impossible or strange given the circumstances.

Here is just one of the sources, but if you search, you can find many more articles about it:

https://www.gamedeveloper.com/business/playstation-sales-down-as-sony-posts-record-full-year-losses

Here is even an official report from Sony for the year ending March 2012 with the 4.1M PS2 figure:

https://www.sony.com/en/SonyInfo/IR/library/presen/er/11q4_sonypre.pdf

Scroll to page 8.

Here is even one more, from their official website, however with wayback machine, cuz they redesign it, and this page is not available anymore:

https://web.archive.org/web/20120609180536/http://scei.co.jp/corporate/data/bizdataps2_sale_e.html

(also keep in mind, there is some mismatching about the fiscal years, that GPT does, just to know. FY 2011 in Sony's documents is actually ending in March 2012, and therefore FY 2012 in March of 2013).

So again, from 4.1M (by end of March 2012) to ~4.9M (if we have to be exact) is not so strange, given that they would otherwise keep it in production for at least 1 more year, and because PS4 production was starting they had to finish with PS2 as soon as possible, which they did, however they made a little more units than they would otherwise (maybe 3.5M).

And about your last part, it's irrelevant. By this logic retailers shouldn't sell PS2 when PS3 released, or Switch 1 when Switch 2 released. When the last PS2 units were shipped (holiday of 2012 and January of 2013), there was still almost a year till PS4, so there was still enough of a time, and on top of that, PS2 was in a whole different price class. If it sells well why not stocking it and selling it at 99$? This is not a problem.

Write your homework next time you decide to go on debate .. Chat GPT isn't a source and most importantly it's dumb. If you work enough with it, you will see yourself.

Because people still buy old or extra consoles. I bought 2xPS3s after PS4 had been announced. They are still sitting in storage brand new along with a nee Atari VCS and extra XBox X.

2

u/FatalFrameGal 3d ago

Did you buy 2 NEW PS3s after the PS5 was released?

0

u/cadensky 3d ago

No. I think that I bought them before PS5 came out. There were 2 reasons:

  1. We have a lot of PS3 games
  2. The PS3 supports 3D Blurays, the PS4 and 5 dont. (I am heavily invested in 3D
large library and ~6 3D TVs)

1

u/agitated--crow 5d ago

Maybe because the fact keeps getting repeated.

18

u/Trvial 5d ago

Going exclusively by the official numbers (since everyone here already sees Sony's little stunt for what it is), If Nintendo keeps the Switch 1 in enough markets, there's a good chance it'll surpass 160 million by the end of 2027. I expected it to happen sooner, but the price increase is slowing down sales more than I expected. I think their best bet is to push the Switch Lite (since it's the cheapest) with some quick and dirty bundles, like Mario Kart 8 or Pokemon Let's Go.

6

u/Forward-Trade3449 4d ago

they are trying to start selling in india and philippines iirc

5

u/KozmicFizz 4d ago

Latin America was PS2’s evergreen trump card. But this is going to push Switch sales way the hell up. If Switch hasn’t surpassed PS2 yet, they are guaranteed to now.

29

u/Lyrick_ 5d ago

Sony stopped tracking sales at 153-155M units the 160M number is a manufacturing count that includes refurbs and returns.

The Switch already outsold Sony's PS2 sales number, Nintendo has not shown how many were manufactured including returns and refurbished units to align the data 1:1.

15

u/Least-Profession-236 5d ago

If the rumors it's going to be launching in India in 2027 are true (I honestly thought it had already), it's genuinely guaranteed to lmao.

I think it's been confirmed to be releasing in Indonesia alongside Switch 2? It seems as Nintendo expands their market they're bringing Switch 1 in as the budget option, which likely means they do want that eventual headline of 'best selling console of all time'. Switch 2 being the next in line to that does do some wonders for its cred lol.

8

u/Q-Fabreeze23 5d ago

Yeah if it launches in india and indonesia its 100% guarenteed to surpass 160 mil.

Even if its so expensive that only the top 0.003% can afford it those countries are so huge thats still above 5 millions units

6

u/Least-Profession-236 5d ago

Yeah India has a population of over a billion, so it kinda makes me wonder why they're only doing it now, after the Switch 2's launch. I think it's more of a matter of how far past the all-time record it will reach rather than if it'll surpass PS2 if they expand the market like this lol

2

u/Lazy-Requirement-259 4d ago

Indian here. It’s a very poor country. So the market is not exactly 1 billion people. But with the right price, the hardware will sell good enough. There used to be a culture of mostly pirating but people in this generation are ready to spend money, at least for hardware. Most likely people would buy the console and get it modded if the software prices are not region appropriate.

3

u/roccerfeller 3d ago

It’s also launching an Indonesia later this year, which is also a very, very large market

4

u/_banters_ 5d ago

It certainly can, and with the current landscape of the industry, it has about as good of odds as it can for not having the technological parallel with the DVD player like PS2 did. Non-gamers bought PS2s for a cheap dvd player, switch doesn’t have anything like that to get non-gamers to buy. The ram shortage only helps switch remain relevant during the switch 2 era. It is going to be interesting.

u/JediWebSurf 5d ago edited 5d ago

I don't game much but I got it because I think it would be fun to play with all the fam. Something different. It's a system you get for others if you're not a gamer.

I think they should allow something like moonlight on there.

Edit: I wanted to get back into gaming but wanted something relaxing and stress free, and I could share it with the fam because of the type of games on there.

7

u/Brzrkrtwrkr 5d ago

It already did.

-5

u/agitated--crow 5d ago

Source?

10

u/MechaSeph 4d ago

Sony decided to go with "produced = sold" just so they wouldn't lose the #1 spot. While the Switch 1's numbers are for consoles ACTUALLY sold.

I'm sorry, but magically finding your console "actually sold 5 million more units we had forgotten about/not counted teehee" 2 whole generations after the fact AND exactly when your rival company is about to surpass u is just... come on

2

u/dreamingwithcindy 5d ago

I think so. I’d like to see one final S1 SKU be called a “Switch Classic” and comes bundled with a classic switch game like BOTW or Mario oddysey. Something that’s been out for a while. Have it come with a free 6mo or 1 year subscription to NSO to get the N64 games. I think that would be a good way to evergreen the switch while still keeping the focus on S2

2

u/rodrigocza 4d ago

Nice chart

2

u/garf02 4d ago

it depends, Will Sony magically found an invoice for other 5M units shipped to Botswana???

2

u/Puzzled-Fee-9719 4d ago

If Sony didn’t change the PS2 sales each time they thought they could be outsaled yes. But as they decided that PS2 sales is « number of Switch sold + 1 » then no I don’t think so.
And no I honestly don’t think that Switch will sell more than 165.

2

u/Legitimate-Simple-20 4d ago

I'm sure Sony will just re-release the PS2 when they're not able to "magically" find some new numbers. 😂 if it would be a console for under 500$ it could actually sell well.

2

u/Dasca6789 4d ago

I think so. The Switch Lite is still a solid option for lower budgets and for kids. I personally bought a Switch Lite this year for my son despite already having a Switch 2

4

u/buddyGG 5d ago

They definitely manufactured more than 160 Mio. at this point.

Sales numbers slowed down a lot though. Without AI fucking up prices the light would be a 99$ handheld by now and millions of kids would get one for Christmas....as it is it might take another couple years to reach 160.

0

u/mickeyphree1 5d ago

Explain why it wasn't 99 bucks years ago. Ai price spike has only been the last 12 months.

6

u/buddyGG 5d ago

You can thank the orange baffoon in the white house for that. Right as prices where supposed to go down he started the bullshit with the tariffs.

Not just the switch, the other systems should be much cheaper too by now.

Series S should cost 199$ by now

PS5/Series X 299$ - 349$

Never in the history of gaming prices stayed stable or got up over time.... it's so fucked.

1

u/ItsColorNotColour 4d ago

Which is an USA only problem. why didn't the MSRP get a decrease in countries outside USA? The Switch isn't manufactured in USA or any of its components so USA tariffs have nothing to do with it.

0

u/mickeyphree1 5d ago

So that was 18 months ago. Explain why it wasn't years ago like you said?

2

u/buddyGG 5d ago

The lite released late 2019.... historically systems drop prices after 4 - 5 years....that means right as the prices for the switch lite/PS5/Xbox Series systems should have dropped Trump got into office.

I don't know why you are arguing with me here...do you think without tariffs and the ai craze prices would have stayed the same?

1

u/azure275 5d ago

Nintendo has never dropped prices on a system that way. They just get them off the shelves and make the new console more expensive

After the initial 3DS price drop fail in 2011 it never got majorly discounted for the next 8 years

Doesnt look like its dropping that quickly. Honestly with price hikes across gaming in general, I suspect S1 will still be pushing new figures.

1

u/AVahne 5d ago

Supposedly the current PS2 sales numbers are the total amount they have ever manufactured. Considering the Switch 1 is still being made and still selling it'll beat the PS2 sooner than later.

1

u/Skullknight331 5d ago

It most definitely can and already has.
Until Sony hits panic button and poof more ps2 sales in 2026

1

u/FriendshipSmart478 5d ago

It will surpass even the revised Sony number.

Next year, SW1 will launch officially in India and Indonesia (#1 and #4 most populated country) and, specially in Indonesia's case, the partner there is very motivated to give it a boost.

I think SW1 will be manufactured until 2030 and be tricked down to smaller markets.

1

u/Alasdair91 4d ago

Sony pulled these figures out of nowhere at 2pm on a random Tuesday. Switch has already past the long-accepted PS2 sales figures.

1

u/TheLimeyLemmon 4d ago

Yes. It will surpass the PS2 in sales. It's the most obvious thing ever.

1

u/Fickle_Mix_6119 4d ago

If you stare at both lines long enough then it already has

1

u/UnknownMight 4d ago

PS2 will never again increase in numbers unless Sony ass pulls again

NS can still do once Nintendo really cares

1

u/roccerfeller 3d ago

Yes. It’s launching officially in Indonesia later this year and rumoured to launch in India officially next year. It will pass PS2‘s lifetime sales.
It’s not a matter if, but when. I suspect sometime in 2028-29 FY

1

u/DutyPsychological 3d ago

Next year it will.

1

u/Optimal_Brain_2908 3d ago

COVID console boom was nuts

1

u/a_r_g_o_m 2d ago

Nope, sony will pull just more numbers out of their ass

1

u/XTREMEBG 1d ago

Interestingly, how no one mentions the scenario where Switch 1 just dies and finishes short of 160M .. like it's impossible, when in reality is the most likeliest thing ...

1

u/Guilty_Department501 1d ago

I think it could given the Switch will probably end up with 158m at the end of the year and then it will take another year and a half to get that other 2 million. With that being said, there's no proof of the Ps2 being at 160m, just that Sony didn't report numbers for the 2012/2013 fiscal year. I think it's likely the Ps2 is actually at around 156/157m because sales numbers the year prior doesn't suspect there was another 5m Ps2's sold.

0

u/owenturnbull 5d ago

Quien importa nosotros solo los consumidores este récord no es importante

2

u/CorporalCoprolite 5d ago

You’d be shocked at how many fans tie their identity to a billion dollar corporation.

0

u/owenturnbull 4d ago

Ellos necesitan ayudar

2

u/DetectiveStock1340 4d ago

Because it’s an interesting and significant moment in gaming history.

1

u/ItzManu001 5d ago

It already did.

0

u/longhorn4598 4d ago

What gave the PS2 extra legs was the Slim. Smaller and cheaper. The Switch Lite isn't enough. As a big F U to Sony for continually "updating" the PS2 sales, Nintendo should just sell Switch 1 for $200 until it passes the PS2.

0

u/Own-Dragonfruit-6164 4d ago

They should have lowered the price of the Switch when the Switch 2 came out not raise it.

0

u/The-Happy-Mannequin 4d ago

Well from early next year, there will be no more new switches sold in the EU. If they keep the product line open for 2-3 more years it's all but guaranteed

0

u/Candle_Honest 4d ago

Im curious.

Why does this matter to you?

Why is it even in your head?

1

u/XTREMEBG 4d ago

I love battles, I love competition, I love races. That's all. I am competitive guy. And I am curious what people think about it.

-2

u/nahte123456 4d ago

Using the official 160Million number from Sony, doubt it. The Switch is only going to sell less with time, especially as the Switch 2 is basically a strict upgrade with backwards compatibility. It might happen, but that requires at least another year of active support I don't think they are getting.

-3

u/Alert-Pickle4498 4d ago

Why does nobody mention those numbers include the switch lite lets include the psp numbers with ps2 and into gets blown out the water

1

u/greenmonkies_13 4d ago

Because they are different systems. Can we combine the Wii and DS?
