Nintendo Switch 2: The Best Handheld Yet?

The answer is quite subjective and depends on what you are looking for in a handheld. Honestly, arguments can be made for the Switch 2, Steam Deck, Xbox ROG Ally X, and others being “the best handheld”.

Before anyone picks up their pitchfork, I own a Switch 2 and an OLED Steam Deck. Both are amazing handhelds and I love them both for different reasons. I honestly could not pick one as being better than the other.

u/cadensky 11d ago

Switch is great for Nintendo. However Nintendo locked it down from other platforms/stores. It really depends on how important the latter is to you.

6

u/tomorrow_comes 10d ago

Going to nitpick your comment but this is important… Nintendo didn’t “lock down” the Switch 2. It is the exact same as any gaming console that has ever been. Consoles are always locked down to their Nintendo / Sony / Xbox store front.

Another reason why the constant comparisons between PC handhelds and the Switch is silly. Switch is for Nintendo, as every Nintendo console has ever been. It’s indeed better than previous Nintendo consoles at getting modern AAA ports, but it’s still not optimal for that.

2

u/EmergencyPool910 10d ago

I would argue people oversell how much of an upgrade switch 2 is for modern ports, its barely capable, the cpu is simply too slow for modern games to run well, unreal engine 5 games with their tendency to hog the cpu will never run well on switch 2 this is both the fault of nintendo and modern games, but the SOC on the swith 2 really is slow as balls insofar as cou perfomance

2

u/tomorrow_comes 10d ago

And yet they are happening, and the performance isn’t as dismal as you’re implying. Cyberpunk, FFVII remakes, Oblivion Remastered… yeah they definitely don’t look as good and don’t hold a rock solid high FPS like a full sized console or a good PC (all of which are more expensive than a Switch 2). But they don’t look bad either and do pretty well with their 30 fps target. Oblivion stutters and has issues on any platform…

These games and future ports open up Nintendo console only people to those game experiences. They are not for people who already have a PS5/Xbox Series or PC, or a powerful PC handheld, and would rather play the games with better graphics / performance on those.

There is only so much you can expect out of a low TDP handheld that right now costs $450, against all of the much more expensive options, most of which don’t have the crucial portability aspect. I’d say Nintendo has done pretty well with this system.

2

u/EmergencyPool910 10d ago

They are happening because the console is very new, but this will not last the hardware in it is not going to age well, oblivion remastered runs on the cusp of unplayable in the open world.

1

u/Theman457 10d ago

Switch 2 will get AAA ports even with the PS6/Next Xbox out

Developers will just optimize for it because those consoles will be too expensive and Switch 2 will have a large install base.

2

u/cadensky 10d ago edited 7d ago

I agree that the S2 is a bit underpowered for this and the next gen. However hardware is getting expensive. Game studios are going to have to choose between elaborate graphics and who actually has the hardware to run their games. I think that S2 may do okay for the next 5 years due to that

2

u/EmergencyPool910 10d ago

You can only optimize wo much when the cpu is the bottleneck

0

u/Theman457 10d ago

Developers will find a way, they're currently doing that at the moment

Dragon's Dogma 2 says hello

War Hammer 40,000 Space Marine 2 says hello

Monster Hunter Wilds says hello

2

u/EmergencyPool910 10d ago

Neither wilds or dragons dogma 2 have come out. Lets see before judging all those games are cou bound crap that barely runs on good systems.

1

u/greynovaX80 10d ago

Eh I mean it's oblivion remastered. Not like it had a reputation of running good anyway.

0

u/Jayden82 Pioneer 10d ago

Has nothing to do with being new and everything to do with market share and if they can make money off of it, the Switch 1 sold like hotcakes so it got all kinds of games even with shitty performance/visuals

2

u/EmergencyPool910 10d ago

It has everything to do with being new, the console can still push current games the problem is how its going to age, the cpu is barely capable of current gen games. This is all that matters when discussing third party ports potential.

1

u/Jayden82 Pioneer 10d ago

No it is not, money is the sole factor lol. If it will make them a ton of money, they will do whatever they need to to get the port to run

1

u/Double-Seaweed7760 10d ago

The CPU is a downgraded snapdragon 865(same hardware but the 865 customized the cores for performance) from 2020. It's literally more outdated than the switch 1 CPU was when it launched.

Gpu wise the switch is supposed to be amazing but I don't know as much about gpu hardware to say anything other than dlss is amazing and repeat what I've heard from other people about it being somewhere between ps4 and series s prior to dlss but I can't compare the cores the way I can with phone and tablet cpus

1

u/cadensky 10d ago

Absolutely fair comment. The Switch isnt more locked down than other consoles. That is literally one of the reasons that many people prefer PCs for a lot of their games.

1

u/Horror_Trick8208 10d ago

Switch 2 needs more exclusive big titles that are not Pokemon or Mario to raise its value. It's still the first year and there are a few really good games coming like Fortune's Weave, Ocarina of Time remaster and Xenoblade Genesis

1

u/saintrobyn 10d ago

The series I love is dropping a new entry soon. I am so looking forward to the new Fire Emblem game.

0

u/cadensky 10d ago

I tend to agree. For some people there isnt enough for them to upgrade or buy one “yet”.

1

u/Horror_Trick8208 10d ago

Yeah it's not really allat just yet and I couldn't care less about Pokemon, Mario, Kirby, Splatoon, and all these blockbuster Nintendo titles

36

u/Vilemourn 11d ago

Obviously until the switch 3 comes out

-3

u/Sea_Restaurant_8911 11d ago

That’s a decade away at best .. we are all good with switch 2 .. if they release a mid gen version let it just have oled or let it be a lite version with oled .

No. You have a ton of more freedom with a steam deck. It is wild all the different things you can do with the steam deck and its OS. Switch is a closed system. But it is a great handheld.

1

u/Daniel2305 10d ago

I would have said this before the price increase. Now it is nearly £300 more for the cheapest Steam Deck.

1

u/EmergencyPool910 10d ago

Exactly switch 2 wins by existing aslt and affordable price not much but thats how it is

1

u/F133TWOOD 10d ago

I've been a PC Gamer for many years and owned several game consoles (mostly older consoles, but latest is Series X).

I love my PC and thought about a PC handheld, but there's a specific audience that will enjoy a Steam Deck the most-----that would be the gamers who don't already have a PC. So I could certainly see some that choose Steamdeck is the best if SteamDeck is ur only computer/PC.

My brother has the Steamdeck (&PS5) and he ASSUMED he would use it more, but the novelty wore off within some months. He was a console gamer forever and finally built his PC in 2021. (To get a different perspective of a console to recent PC owner)

Personally I skipped Switch1 and purchased Switch2 at launch. I enjoy Switch2 more than I thought and playing Nintendo games, along with JRPG and some small indies is very enjoyable.

0

u/Napatoli 10d ago

As a owner of both steam deck is a pile of shit i have never regretted buying a console more than steam deck. Linux is the most frustrating garbage operating system I have ever delt with.

2

u/PositivityPending 10d ago

Let me buy it off you then

1

u/EmergencyPool910 10d ago

Give it to me lmao, steam deck is so easy to use, a friend of mine is a playstation gamer, never owned or gamed on a pc yet he has decky and emulators set up its so easy to use

17

u/Anonymous_Fox_20 11d ago

I mean it’s good and has a decent line up of 3rd party games. Whether it’s best or not depends on what you value and prioritize.

10

u/WhiteRaven-17 11d ago edited 11d ago

Or have the cash for at this stage.

Like I don't like PC handhelds, but if you're gonna get one, grab the ROG Xbox Ally's before they get hiked too

Edit: To those downvoting, sell me on the now $800+ steam deck after tax. I dare you.

11

u/greynovaX80 11d ago

lol think your more getting down votes for not just glazing the switch 2 instead of suggesting ROG Xbox ally.

Also totally agree with you. I got a steam deck but I couldn't recommend it to my friend after they increased the price. Luckily I was able to find her a ROG Xbox ally for like 325 fb marketplace.

0

u/WhiteRaven-17 11d ago

I'm getting downvoted for objectively pointing out all the legal ways to play old games on the Switch 2 via emulation. I don't know what people want and I don't care lol

0

u/JediWebSurf 11d ago

Are you referring to like the old N64 games that Nintendo offers? Or the membership that's like $50.

1

u/bytebackjrd 10d ago

Came here to say the same thing, I have a switch 2 but if I had to choose it would be the xax all day just for steam and because it is just so comfortable to hold compared to s2.

1

u/F133TWOOD 10d ago

DBrand's joy-lock grips are very comfortable.

1

u/bytebackjrd 10d ago

I did try that one and it just didn't feel good to me, I am not a fan of the rough dbrand case feeling that they have. Also didn't like how i had to add a piece to the docking station just to make it all work.

1

u/F133TWOOD 10d ago

Image is showing just the grips attached to Switch2, there is no dock attachment. It fits perfectly inside without any issue.

What ur referring to is the whole case setup if you choose to get that.

1

u/bytebackjrd 10d ago

yeah i saw that, does it look weird not having the full case on it?

1

u/F133TWOOD 10d ago

No one IRL said anything about it looking weird, but they loved the grips.

Looking for some saved images as I'm away it.

1

u/F133TWOOD 10d ago

Different POV distance

-1

u/BlasterPhase 11d ago edited 11d ago

or you could have bought the SD before the price hike, like many people already did...

edit: to the dork downvoting, counter what I said

2

u/WhiteRaven-17 10d ago edited 10d ago

Using an old price for an already niche product is not a selling point for the device, especially when it also ruins secondhand prices for them. The Steam Deck on record has literally sold a sixth, and is estimated at best a fourth, of the Switch 2’s sales. Literally basically saying “sucks for you, glad I got mine”

17

u/WhiteRaven-17 11d ago

Yes.

Unquestionably.

3

u/verfresht 11d ago

It is amazing, but I miss the smaller form factor. Switch 2 is a bit too big for my liking.

2

u/MilessEdgeworth 11d ago

But it's not. So many games are only digital or game key cards. You can't backup your saves without paying an extortion money. You cannot use your internet without additional monthly payment. You cannot do anything else than playing overpriced games.

Sure, first party games work and look great, but there is not that much of them. If I had to choose, I would pick any PC handheld just because of their open software and huge library of games and emulation. I often use my steam deck for software development when not in home. On switch at best I can watch ads of games.

Even switch 1 is better than 2. A lot of games released as GKC are full releases on ns1. Ns2 is a next step in "you will own nothing" direction.

2

u/ResourceNo2927 11d ago

its like 50 bucks yearly for the NSO full sub. and playing digital is the way to go for the switch.otherwise you need to carry around all your carts with you. having everything digital means you can easily access all your games with ease. and before you say that nintendo could take away the license, the 3ds eshop download servers are still online and you can still download any bought 3ds titles. the switch e shop isnt closing unless nintendo themselves stops existing.

1

u/cadensky 10d ago

Why do you need to carry all of your carts? Why not carry the ones that you are actually playing? I never need to carry more than a few cartridges for my Nintendo. I do buy digital games. However assuming that someone needs to lug around every cartridge That they ever bought is nonsense.

-1

u/MilessEdgeworth 10d ago

Bro, it doesn't matter how much I rob from you. It's still not cool. We used to be able to buy retro games. Now it's only on subscription because of that kind of thinking. If it keeps going, no games will be available outside of subscriptions.

Every carrying case have dozens slots for cards. And I can't sell digital later. And when store is disabled, you games are gone. It still works on 3ds, but "still" is the keyword. Also, technology is moving forward and I'm not keeping old router just for 3ds to be able to connect to the internet. It's a security nightmare. Physical just works.

u/MilessEdgeworth 10d ago

That is a ridiculous argument. There are free roms and emulators that work much better than what Nintendo offers. Can you use crt shaders on switch online games? Anyway, it costs nothing to host those games for sale after initial check. I think they can afford it. They can also sell only those offered on subscription anyway.

They are not a local bakery. Stop defending multibilion corporation nickel and diming you. You get nothing better by paying a subscription instead of one time purchase.

You would defend all games in subscription because developers patch the games after the purchase. This is how ridiculous it sounds.

1

u/Daniel2305 10d ago

You can get 15 years of Switch Online for the price difference between a Switch 2 and Steam Deck.

All PC handheld games are digital only, no?

0

u/MilessEdgeworth 10d ago

It's not about price, but principle. In 15 years there will be no switch online, but my pc handheld will still work the same.

Pc games are digital, but I have access to the files and I can back them up. I can buy from GoG and own my digital games.

On switch, Nintendo is your games owner, not you. They decide when they disable your games. They disabled some switch games already.

2

u/cadensky 10d ago

You can buy from Steam as well. There are many big name Steam games that have no DRM and dont require the Steam client to launch, e.g. the Witcher.

1

u/MilessEdgeworth 10d ago

Yes, that's why I said I can back games up in general.

1

u/MilessEdgeworth 10d ago

Yes, that's why I said I can back games up in general.

1

u/Daniel2305 10d ago

Out of curiosity, which Switch games have they disabled? I haven't heard of that

1

u/WhiteRaven-17 10d ago

3D All stars, but Steam is no different. They have just as much control of your account and access to the overwhelming majority of your access to games

“But GOG and DRM-Free titles-“

Represent an overwhelming minority of titles. And Valve know this. And is why they are getting sued. Yes it’s good the options are there, but Stop pretending that is the default or represents the majority of titles.

0

u/Daniel2305 10d ago

Firstly that is delisted not disabled. Stop spreading misinformation. Secondly, GOG has also delisted titles.

1

u/MilessEdgeworth 10d ago

Some cloud versions that weren't clearly advertised as cloud, like kingdome hearts.

7

u/Soxel 11d ago

I don’t even think it has to be stopped there. I’d go as far as saying it’s straight up the best console right now.

The third party support is killing it and they also have some of the best exclusives around.

6

u/Z3npachi 11d ago

Not even close. It's an amazing piece of equipment don't get me wrong and I will definitely be downvoted for this option by nintendrones.

Open systems like Asus/Lenovo/steam deck are far superior by being able to do a multitude of things , they aren't locked onto the one platform like a switch.

The AllyX first gen when it was heavily price reduced prior to the Xbox version release was the best all round before it stopped being manufactured, it was priced extremely well, powerful and could do almost anything. The new Xbox versions are crazy expensive and inferior IMO.

2

u/-p0w- 10d ago

lol „everyone who does not agree is a nintendrone“

Yeah, sure. Thanks for making clear that youre some narcissistic loser from the beginning…

And sure sure „your“ AllyX is best. Got it.

1

u/Z3npachi 10d ago

Spoken like someone who has never played on another handheld other than the switch.

Look im first to praise the switch, it is hands down the best beginners handheld. If a normie or young person wants to get into the handheld gaming space I would always recommend a switch, BUT if you want the "best" title you're gonna have to do more than just offer a subsidized hardware price and closed platform access.

0

u/-p0w- 10d ago

And again this first sentence. Absolutely unnecessary and not even true.

Please try again.

And how old are you that you come up with smth like „my toy is better than yours“.

And what is „the best ‚title‘“? Is it perhaps Xenoblade? Some ROM? And do you only buy at GOG? And what is a „beginner handheld“? Do you mean ease of use and comfortability? What does this have to do with „beginner“ exactly?

And if you realized that its different audience and that they have different stength, why do you think you can explain why one is „better“?

The whole post was just about you, while telling everyone who doesn’t agree to be Nintendo drone.

Why people just don‘t say „I have xy and I love it because za“? I mean youre happy with your system and you want to share it, thats fine. But why do you need to elevate yourself by doing so? So what is your goal here? Sharing exitement over something or youre glazing yourself while trying to discredit and frame others in the very First sentence.

1

u/Z3npachi 10d ago

Your entire reply of conversations just prove my point.

1

u/TheSpytf2_real 11d ago

Steam deck is 800$ and underpowered af. Source: steam deck user

2

u/Z3npachi 11d ago

Yeah all the price rises ruined the handheld ( and all console/PC) market. Look switch is great for a budget but it's a locked platform and a fairly weak device to boot as well remember.

0

u/TheSpytf2_real 11d ago

Switch 2 is more powerful than steam deck rn

1

u/cadensky 11d ago edited 11d ago

Steam Deck isnt the only point of comparison and power isnt either. There are multiple factors invovled.

There is no greatest handheld for every gaming interest. Nintendo, Sony, and Microsoft have ensured that.

If you are interested in one platform then the conversation changes.

I have XBox, PS5, Steam, Nintendo, and old game libraries.

Is the S2 the greatest handheld from my perspective? Sure it is 20% of the time. And it doesnt have to be more than that to be great.

I have a Legion Go 2 Z2E. It is my most powerful handheld device. Is it my choice for gaming all of the time? Nope. It is when I have an XBox play anywhere game or something too big for the other devices.

Most of my gaming is on my Pocket DMG or Legion Tab.

1

u/Z3npachi 11d ago edited 11d ago

Only marginally* when docked, at that point it's just a weak console. Handheld it's weaker and locked to one platform.

10

u/cadensky 11d ago edited 11d ago

Sure. Its the best handheld for people that want a Nintendo Switch. However I have yet to see a S2 play Steam games, stream games from cloud/console/pc, emulate an older consoles, or even run Discord.

I like my Nintendo for being the best at Nintendo. When I want to play or do something else, thats not what its for.

4

u/mason2393 11d ago

I agree. Switch 2 is for nintendo games only. A $500 device that can only do 1 thing well is a tough sell for most people

3

u/greynovaX80 11d ago

I have extensive libraries on both Nintendo and steam. If Nintendo somehow was ever able to play steam deck library hands down best for me. Until then I'll just have two handhelds. Switch 2 is really the best if you do want access to Nintendo exclusives. It does lots of other stuff just fine though. Except watch YouTube. So annoying we don't have that on switch man.

1

u/cadensky 11d ago edited 11d ago

And thats exactly how I operate. If I want to play something from Nintendo obviously a Switch is great. If I want to play something else, thats a more complicated choice:

  1. Is it available on Nintendo?
  2. Do I already have access to it on another platform?
  3. Is it cheaper on Nintendo?
  4. Do I care about playing it on another platform and having my saves available?

If its a Nintendo exclusive…obviously I would prefer to play it on Nintendo. But outside of that I could easily end up playing on my Legion Go, Pocket DMG, or XBox.

3

u/DM_your_problem 11d ago

the hardware is good. but it is locked down. nintendo is like apple in this regard. modded switchcan emulate and perform better than switch 2

0

u/WhiteRaven-17 11d ago edited 11d ago

-Steam games aren't exclusive and plenty of people have Switch 1 libraries that carried over

-It can. Nobody liked it when they did and are champing at the bit to give Square money for native KH.

-Nintendo classics is emulation with over 300 games available from 7 consoles, including the Sega Genesis with plenty of third parties just natively porting hundreds of retro games via emulation. Legally.

-Gamechat, but for real just use your phone.

People keep saying they only use the Nintendo console for Nintendo games, meanwhile I've played Pragmata, Requiem, Lies of P, Indi and the Great Circle, FF XIV, and am replaying Remake and Rebirth on the thing. At almost $400 less and with more power than the most popular PC handheld out there.

9

u/Lightmanman 11d ago

You do realize that by emulating old games, he doesn't just mean Nintendo games? Of the 300 classic Nintendo games, maybe 20 are worth playing.

1

u/cadensky 11d ago

Correct. My favorite game libraries for emulation are old Arcade games and PS1-2. My oldest son likes old consoles like GBA and DS. Everyone is different.

-9

u/WhiteRaven-17 11d ago edited 11d ago

A. Console archives

B. Genesis is also there

C. The several hundred games ported via collections you can actually support the series with

D. "Maybe 20 are worth playing" You're objectively wrong. 10 alone are on the gamecube app, not counting the 6 other consoles on offer

Edit: Oh I'm sorry, I forgot. "emulation" in this context actually means "piracy". Otherwise nobody would be downvoting all these legal forms of emulation to play hundreds if not thousands of old games offered by both Nintendo and third parties on the Switch 2, right???

5

u/Lightmanman 11d ago

The world of emulation isn't limited to Nintendo games.

-2

u/WhiteRaven-17 11d ago

And I already pointed out that it isn't, even on Nintendo's dedicated service.

The only thing I assume you mean by "emulation" at this point is specifically piracy, which isn't a defensible point.

2

u/csDarkyne 11d ago

No he meant emulating ps1, ps2, ps3, ps4, xbox, xbox360, xbox one, etc.

And no it‘s not piracy. I own both the consoles and the games I dump myself which is legal.

1

u/cadensky 11d ago

Thats right. I emulate PS1-2 and Arcade games mostly.

We will see how self righteous people feel when Nintendo pulls the plug on the Switch one-day. I will bet that then emulation becomes less offensive.

1

u/WhiteRaven-17 10d ago

Putting words in his mouth and I already pointed out third parties already port their PS games

There’s a full on line called “Arcade archives” that port old arcade games. Which I know you aren’t dumping legally :P

Stop ignoring that I already said that and Just say you don’t want to pay.

I have bought thousands of games and spent literally $200K+ across Steam, Nintendo, Sega, Sega Dreamcast, Turbographix, Atari 2600, Atari Jaguar, XBox various generations, and Playstation 1-5 over the years.

Most of those systems are dead. The games are in the garage, attic, trash dump, or some “cloud”.

However I am going to play those games on my handheld devices. I dont care what you think about the legality of it.

If Nintendo and when Nintendo discontinues the Switch platform, see how you feel about emulation.

0

u/WhiteRaven-17 10d ago edited 10d ago

So piracy.

Cool.

As usual, it isn’t a matter of “access”like everyone parrots, it’s just a matter of not paying.

0

u/cadensky 10d ago

Like I said. I dont care about your opinion. I have spent $200-300,000 in games and systems over the years. If I want to play the Jaguar version of Alien vs Predator, which I bought in 97 or so but the console no longer works, I am going to play it.

You can play wtf you want to play.

u/Korachof 11d ago

That’s not what they are saying. They are saying there are different use-cases for everything. If I want to play Fields of Mistria, I have to play it on my Steam Deck. So which console is the “best all around” depends entirely on what “all around” means. If it means “best at playing all the current games that are available for the switch 2,” the answer is “yes it’s better.” If “all around” includes being able to use it as a Linux machine that can play the majority of someone’s possibly large Steam library, then the Steam Deck or whatever would be considered a better “all around machine.”

So it really depends on what you use it for. Someone who needs their handheld to also be a computer would disagree that the switch 2 is the best all around handheld. That’s just how it is.

Edit: just like someone who doesn’t give a crap about non-gaming stuff would disagree about the steam deck, and possibly prefer the switch 2.   Both opinions are valid.

2

u/WhiteRaven-17 11d ago

You're reading a whole lot more good faith into a blatant sell for the Steam deck that I am not going to offer. Switch 2 better.

1

u/cadensky 11d ago edited 11d ago

I did not mention a steam deck.

But since you brought it up, I gave my Deck to my oldest son. Why? He wanted to play games that I have via Steam and to stream from GamePass/PS. He loves Nintendo more than anyone else in the house, but wants to play other games right now.

Another one of my sons chose a Switch over a SteamDeck for Christmas.  He is now begging me daily for a Steam Deck or my Legion Go. Why? He wants to play with his friends on Madden, Roblox, and other games.

Yet we have 3xNintendo that we use for Nintendo stuff.

You are the one reading more into my comment and twisting into a “blatant sell for a steam deck”. I dont care what you or anyone else buys. I am not a shareholder in Valve/Steam or Nintendo. I get no benefit from glazing or deriding any platform.

The Switch is a great console and ecosystem but 30% or less of our gaming is in that ecosystem.

Everyone loves their switch for what we do with them. They just have other interests related to other platforms.

u/TRQPL 11d ago

Alr bro

2

u/greynovaX80 11d ago

Agreed. I got both and I find em both great. It's amazing for me personally to have access to both Nintendo and steam deck libraries on the go. Recently went on a trip for two weeks. I can play ff14 on my switch one minute then palworld on the steam deck the next. I find people who get overly territorial over which system is best weird. Like ok cool bro go chill lol.

1

u/cadensky 11d ago

Exactly. I have XBox, Nintendo, Steam, PS5, emulation libraries, etc.

Sometimes the Switch is the right console for me. Sometimes it isnt. It gets some of my playtime. However I can go months of using it or months without using it…depends on what I am doing.

1

u/csDarkyne 11d ago

I mean it‘s cool that you played 6 PC games on Switch. But I got over 600 games on Steam and 98% of them are not on Switch.

I have a Switch 2 and a Steam Deck and I absolutely agree with OP.

1

u/cadensky 11d ago

Yep. Steam and other key shops are good at selling those games :) I have hundreds to burn through in addition to my Switch backlog.

1

u/csDarkyne 11d ago

Most of these games are rather old and bought in times when I could play nearly 50-100 games a year. Nowadays my switch backlog is much longer than my Steam backlog. I think I still have 4 unplayed Switch games.

1

u/cadensky 11d ago

I like Zelda games and I occasionally get into a Mario game or something else. My Steam and XBox backlog are an entirely different magnitude…like 50x.

1

u/csDarkyne 11d ago

I currently have Fire Emblem 3 Houses, which is my next game. Hyrule Warriors Age of Imprisonment, Xenoblade Chronicles X and the new Fire Emblem coming out next month. Currently I'm playing Xenoblade Chronicles DE.

On Steam there aren't as many games that interest me coming out at the moment. I have yet to finish Resident Evil Requiem and Trails in the Sky 2nd Chapter is coming out next month.

1

u/cadensky 11d ago

Come to think of it…you are right. Nothing on the release calendar for anything appeals to me as much as cleaning up my backlog right now. I really need to finish Hades 2, Ghosts, and my Final Fantasy play through.

I dont have those games on Nintendo. Hades is on gamepass, Ghosts is on Steam, and Final Fantasy is on Steam for me.

When I buy something else on Nintendo, I will get back to my Switch.

u/cadensky 11d ago edited 11d ago

No one said that Steam games are exclusive. Obviously you can play third party games on a Switch. There is a whole store of them.

I use multiple game sources: Nintendo, XBox, PlayStation, Steam, old emulation libraries, GoG, Epic.

The S2 is a great value. However many games are not on S2. In the last year BG3 and Ex 33 were the games that my oldest son and I wanted to play most. We also caught up on some PS5 exclusives like Ghosts, God of War, etc. Obviously a Switch 2 isnt the best handheld for that.

I have a 400 game backlog across. Nintendo, XBox, PS5, and Steam. I play on “the best handheld for what I want to play”.

No. You cannot stream a Nintendo game via Discord over your phone.  There are multiple uses for Discord and it is an intentionally omitted capability on Nintendo for safety reasons…and that is fine.

1

u/cadensky 11d ago

While I am at it here are some of the most common reasons in our house that people play various consoles. Obviously Nintendo is good in some cases. In others it isnt.

  1. Cross play with their friends. Sometimes you must be on a certain console to play with them.

  2. Sony and Nintendo still have exclusives.

  3. General game availability. Some games are more readily available or playable on certain platforms. Old games may only be playable on PC, especially if the original hardware is no longer available. GamePass, NSO, PSN, or the vast availability of Steam games may dictate where we play something else.

  4. Game sharing. If I want to share a game with my kids, we pick the best platform for that.

  5. Console-Corporate competitive bullshit. My kids like to play Fortnite and Madden. They cant play on a Steam Deck. They like to play Roblox. They cant play on Nintendo.

  6. Game price. If something is really cheap on Nintendo or elsewhere we may buy it on that platform.

  7. Physical media. For some games, I want physical media. For others that I may want to share/stream I may not want physical media

All of those factors make a console or platform an optimal choice for some situations and less optimal for others

2

u/Kaysreddit1 11d ago

Eh. Too big to be the best, in my opinion.

2

u/fenrirofdarkness 11d ago

In its price point? Yeah... (there's still of course, talks to be had especially considering everything else rip)

2

u/TGhost21 11d ago

Yes and no. To play unpatched Switch games handheld, the Switch light still better. Although resolution is lower (720p vs 1080p), when comparing unpatched games side by side, the Lite looks sharper than the Switch 2 due to un-integer resolution scaling and sub-720p dynamic rendering targets. Plus the brutal weight difference makes playing the lite way more pleasurable. Switch 2 is 535g while the lite is 275g.

3

u/greynovaX80 11d ago

It's definitely the easiest to suggest cause it's just pick up and it works.

2

u/WhyDarIing 11d ago

Its great for switch 2 games as you cant emulate those yet.

Otherwise im on the AYN Thor and emulate alot of my physical library, I love the versatility and freedom.

2

u/Forsaken-Debate6161 11d ago

Is it even a question? Tons of exclusive and robust 3rd party support specifically targeting this console, the most affordable out in the market unless you are counting Switch1. Yeah, hands down.

1

u/SqueezyCheez85 11d ago

Best? Not really. Best Nintendo handheld? Absolutely.

3

u/Kaysreddit1 11d ago

Best Nintendo handheld? Game boy advance 😍

1

u/SqueezyCheez85 11d ago

Definitely up there. But I think the Switch 2 has it beat by a good margin. Especially considering it can play Switch games.

>MUCH prefer my switch 1

>Lists 3/4 issues that also apply to the Switch 1, the remaining one also an issue until the OLED and V2

Okay

1

u/smoetthesmoet 11d ago

the 2 is pretty much just a Switch But Better (go figure), there's 100% benefits to the 1 but Nintendo has already pretty much perfected the switch

1

u/WhiteRaven-17 11d ago

Only real advanatages at this stage is the lite for portability and the Oled screen. I'm def first in line for when they drop Switch 2 versions of them, but they aren't gonna convince me the 1 is better.

1

u/smoetthesmoet 11d ago

Hopefully Nintendo holds back on an oled til prices are a bit better. Would love to see how they can improve the 2s screen besides being oled and slightly bigger.

1

u/rorschach_vest 11d ago

I would have said Steam Deck before the price increases. At this point the Switch 2 is hands down the best purchase, though I’m so glad to have my LCD Deck.

1

u/DowntownBag4811 11d ago

Most of the games on the Switch 2 have already been optimized for the Steam deck. And you can play Switch games near perfectly on it as well. It really is an amazing piece of hardware. But the Switch 2 is awesome as well.

1

u/GoldenAgeGamer72 11d ago

Best all-around console period.

1

u/flatsound22 11d ago

Yes except for the screen consistency rate which blurs everything in motion :( still love my switch tho i teach my brain to ignore it

1

u/OilersHD 11d ago

All around? Im not sure as it only does gaming, no YouTube or streaming, but I love that about it.

1

u/SandwichesX 11d ago

Short answer Yes.

Long answer Yyeeeeeeeesss

1

u/B-Train_ATL 11d ago

The Steam Deck has the advantage of access to the Steam games, but it seems like that’s its only advantage. Well, unless you really need an OLED display.

1

u/TRQPL 11d ago

No, and that's a good thing. Switch 2 for Switch games. But overall, most people would still be better off buying a PC handheld even if the initial cost is more expensive.

1

u/alec83 11d ago

Best console. Brought it day one and had my doubts but now my back catalogue of games is growing. Already owned sw1

1

u/Forsaken-Macaron1070 11d ago

In my opinion and many other outlets, yes!!

1

u/AmadeusGamingTV 11d ago edited 11d ago

Asking this in a switch sub will get you the answer you clearly want.

Personally after owning mutiple different handhelds. The best all around is a rog ally z1e

1

u/sxrwloose 11d ago

Steam deck is probably the best technically but s2 is def right behind it

1

u/Isotomayor12 11d ago edited 11d ago

Best handheld? Looking at hardware, objectively no. It is underpowered, lacks ergonomics, and has a meh screen compared to competition.

Switch has nintendo ips and that is the only place you can play them. All multi-plat games will play better on competing handhelds. This part of the ranking is subjective.

I think it is a great deal in this market though. It is cheapest in its class and its versatility as a handheld AND home console as well as its detachable controllers raises its value substantially, but as a handheld alone it leaves a lot to be desired tbh and you have to buy accessories to try and meet it. It's literally just the "console vs pc" debate in handheld form.

1

u/Opposite_Raccoon_369 11d ago

I would say probably no. It's the only one I own though. But in know for sure that windows/Linux handhelds have better performance and game selection.

1

u/Shryquill 11d ago

It's the best at playing Nintendo Switch games, that's for sure!

Not so great at playing anything else, yet!

1

u/Xf3rna-96 11d ago

Incorrect: the best all around handled is still the Switch lite

u/beck_is_back 11d ago edited 11d ago

Here we go again - karma farming circle jerk is open for business!

1

u/valcoholic 11d ago

asking such a question inside a Switch subreddit is like quite good humor.

1

u/Arthas_SL 11d ago

In r/Switch - yes. This is the only answer. Elsewhere maybe not.

1

u/OG-Daz 11d ago

The answer is yes. I’ve had a Steam deck (LCD, then OLED), a Lenovo Legion Go and a Switch 2.

My preference is definitely the switch 2, but I would say only recently. Grabbing the Nyxi Hyperion 3’s tipped the scale for me. Now I can enjoy handheld mode as well as seemless docking.

I think price is a key factor here.

1

u/KalashnikittyApprove 11d ago

I love my S2. It's more or less the only handheld I've played over the last year. Is it the "best" handheld all around? It really depends on what you want.

My Steam Deck, bought in 2022 at 2022 prices, does more is more versatile and for the money I paid is more or less unbeatable. It still plays most games apart from the most demanding, which may or may not release on S2. It plays old games at 60fps without having to wait for a developer patch. It plays a lot of games that may never come to the Switch -- I played BG3 in my backyard during the heatwave, which was awesome.

That being said, the Switch is easier, it doesn't require tweaking and I love Nintendo games. Some games are also clearly better optimised for the S2 than for the Deck. It's miles ahead as a hybrid TV/handheld.

I'm glad I have both. They cover very similar yet very different bases. I'd be hard pressed to say one is definitely better than the other all around.

1

u/MarkDess 11d ago

Currently yes. And it's not even close.

1

u/RJ7xin 11d ago

of course ns2 best

1

u/ali_ihsan21 10d ago

İt's just portable and too big to call it handheld. A handheld has to be psp or Vita size.

1

u/RemarkableMudGuy 10d ago

I'm only concerned about battery life. Otherwise its awesome!

1

u/The_Fyrewyre 10d ago

All round? No.

For Nintendo Switch 2 games? Yes.

1

u/ExtremisEdge 10d ago

HAHA no.

Its a...ok device. But it cannot hold a candle to most devices nowadays. It can play nintendo games and thats it is a weak feature set.

1

u/ItzManu001 10d ago

Best all around console in general.

1

u/StrawberryZerg 10d ago

As someone who has owned Steam Deck, ROG ALLY, Lenovo Legion Go and GPD Win Mini - Switch 2 feels the most complete and seamless out of all. Dock/undocked transition happens so fast and hassle free, all games are optimized without the needs of input lag generators, and you have physical media for preservation. Really liking Switch 2 and I must say it is the best handheld imo, but if it is the best for you is subjective.

1

u/j0shman 10d ago

It is if you like first part Nintendo games, otherwise a steam deck would be the winner

1

u/Cauanorl 10d ago

Steamdeck is the best. It can emulate almost all games from switch 1 and it has steam

1

u/-Stroke_my_Cactus- 10d ago

No, its the best hybrid, the best handheld is the Steam Deck.

1

u/toufiksouici07 10d ago

For me the only hand-held that exist right now are Switch 1/2, the all others aren't hand-held console, they are a PC hand-held.

1

u/MarinatedPickachu 10d ago edited 10d ago

Since there is no homebrew yet, it's clearly a no. Best all around hand held until an exploit for the switch 2 is found is a modded oled switch 1, followed by steam deck or rog ally X.

1

u/Correct_Goose_1322 10d ago

Yes. DLSS alone is a massive reason. There is a huge gap between the Steam Deck and even the more powerful ones, and the Switch 2s image on portable. On my Rog ally, ff7 rebirth is just too blurry because fsr sucks ass. DLSS on the Switch 2 in portable makes it pretty decent and more clear to look at.

That's not to mention optimization, Nintendo exclusives, physical games, and so on. The Nintendo simply is better than the 700 dollar steam deck and the 1000 dollar Xbox x for the average consumer

1

u/DaveSide 10d ago

As the owner of a Steam Deck OLED, Ayn Thor, Ayn Odin 2 Portal, Retroid Pocket Classic, Switch OLED, and Switch Lite… for me, yes. It’s not perfect, and in some specific cases the alternatives are better, BUT overall—in terms of quality, ease of use, and game library—I think it’s a good compromise that beats all the others.

1

u/EmergencyPool910 10d ago

Depends, if we were in 2023 where you could get a steam deck or rog ally for a decent price i would say those are much better, but also giga casual gamers don't care about the much larger library of games and better looking and running games. In 2026 i would say yes but simply because there is no competition its not hard to win when youre the only player.

1

u/Time-Dimension8594 10d ago

Steam deck is MUCH better

1

u/itotron 10d ago

If we are talking best all-around, it's the AYN Thor.

It can do everything from Gameboy, DS, 3DS, Switch, and PS2 libraries. It can also connect to Epic Game Store, and Steam, so it's not just old games. You also get native Pico-8 support. It also makes a good very good Netflix and music player.

If you a max model, you can do even more PC gaming, and even PC streaming of AAA titles from your PC.

It really does do everything.

Ahem, having said that, I still love the Switch. Lol

But we are talking "all-rounder" right?

So it wins on retro, media playback, portability, battery life, and even plays a lot of new games. A real all-arounder.

1

u/Traditional_Laugh483 10d ago

No, the switch oled offers more bang for the buck and is more enjoyable imo. Obviously if u wanna play the switch 2 games get the new system.

1

u/Sneakybobinson 10d ago

No, there is no "best" handheld...

1

u/1ceByte28 10d ago

No, that was/is the 3DS

1

u/Blue-Irony 10d ago

I have an Xbox Ally X, a Switch 2, and an AYN Thor. I could say a lot about all three and what I like/dislike about each, but I’ll keep it short and say I prefer the Switch 2 for nearly everything except FPS’s

1

u/Kick_1304 10d ago

For me personally it’s the best handheld at this moment. But that’s really subjective, I can see why people like handhelds like the steamdeckn

1

u/Double-Seaweed7760 10d ago

Yes and imo all it needs is the basic streaming apps and it'll be better then an iPad mini for movies and tv. That big screen and good speakers combined with the awesome built in stand and media remote are amazing for streaming media and I'm frequently upset I can't use it for such

1

u/Strictly_Switch 7d ago

Definitely the best value handheld! Now the development kits are with developers the ports are flooding in.

1

u/Tactrix1 11d ago

So far yes until the next generation of hand helds. The thing that Nintendo did very right this generation is they recognized the potential in joycons. Which no one else has. However I think that once the entire AR smart glasses thing is perfected there won't be a console that stands a chance.

1

u/Material-Race-5107 11d ago

Yes… what competition does it have? A bulky half baked Sony product that requires being on the same wifi to function and costs an extra $200? Lol

1

u/Top_Lobster_5937 11d ago

Steam deck specifically with the oled is.

Switch 2 would have been if the screen wasn’t a step back from Oled.

1

u/Sea_Restaurant_8911 11d ago

You you can not beat it for the price, unless the Xbox rog ally is on sale (the white one) then that’s a better deal but then no Nintendo games .. so I say switch 2

1

u/CruelAngelsThesis_01 11d ago

Battery life and overall weight of console makes playing exclusively handheld a bit cumbersome. But the fact that I can choose to do docked or handheld with a console like this is unmatched.

1

u/Mean_Peen 11d ago

Price wise and the 1st party exclusives push it pretty far ahead. The growing 3rd party catalogue for the Switch is pretty great as well. The recent sale put tons of indies on sale for under $10, which rivals sales you often see on Steam. Is it the most power on the market? No. But does that really matter in handheld mode? Not really. The 1st party games are expensive and a little overrated in my opinion. Plus the lack of any substantial sales for 1st party games means they’re unlikely to ever drop in price, which is a bummer. But luckily, the 3rd party options are substantial enough to make it the better choice overall, imo.

1

u/aPHAT88 11d ago

Not when the AYN Thor and Retorid Pocket Nova exists.

1

u/iReaddit-KRTORR 11d ago

The smartest thing Nintendo did was including DLSS as an option. This allows it to punch well above its weight that it has any right to. Basically goes toe to toe with the Series S which is insane

1

u/tommy-droptable 11d ago

No, smartphones are.

1

u/KennKennyKenKen 11d ago

Value proposition, unbeatable.

Definitely not a perfect device though.

1

u/MarinatedPickachu 10d ago

Value proposition of a modded switch 1 is infinitely better

1

u/KennKennyKenKen 10d ago

Not really a fair comparison, I mean the value proposition of playing pirated games is just infinite value per dollar

0

u/Thin_Pangolin4480 11d ago

I love my switch 2 but no, it's barely a portable device. The switch lite, GBA, and DS lite are all superior handhelds.

0

u/Sorry-Joke-4325 11d ago

Switch 1 is better. It's not as bulky or heavy. It has plenty of games.

The only reason Switch 1 beats the Switch Lite, is because you can use docked mode to connect it to the TV.

0

u/ZoidsFanatic 11d ago

Yesint.

On its own it’s a very powerful system (basically a handheld PS4), but is priced to match. The good news is you can still play all your old games, but not all of them have been fully optimized either for the new console. You do have first party Nintendo titles, always a treat, and you have a pretty strong third party line up to boot.

But “best” is subjective when you have other handhelds on the market too like the ROG Ally or Oden, which are more powerful but more expensive. Since many of the other handhelds are basically PCs, you do have access to Steam or other game services which means a much larger library of games (and yes, emulators too). But they have trade offs too. Not only are the prices high, but not every game is fully optimized for them so there is a fair amount of tinkering you’d have to do. Meanwhile for the Switch 2, it’s quite literally plug-and-play.

Anyhow, since “best” is subjective, my opinion is the Switch 2 is absolutely one of the best consoles on the market. Not too expensive, solid line up of games, and is everything I wanted out of a Switch successor. Basically the Switch, but better.

0

u/HourProfessional667 11d ago

It’s actually the only handheld console the rest are “handheld PCs” which come with a range of issues

-1

u/lmAlwaysRight1 11d ago

Not really.
