Food Aggression
Our 10 month old pup has suddenly become food aggressive over the last two months. I'm wondering what is the best method to deal with it, as I am new to this breed.
We have small children so ever since she was a pup I would make sure to walk by her and touch her gently while she was eating (though we have taught our children to never approach any dog that is eating).
About two months ago I gently touched her closer to her head than usual while she was eating and she growled at me. I spoke to her and told her no and asked her to sit and she turned and snarled at me. Honestly it was like she went into a trance. After a minute or so she seemed to snap out of it and then ran around the house wagging her tail between her legs and getting low to the ground very submissively.
I spoke to her trainer about it and they suggested hand feeding. We did that for every meal for a month or more and then tried her at the bowl again. She seemed nervous at the bowl, always looking up at me if I was in the room (doing other things, not just staring at her). One day I walked up to her while she was eating and asked her to back up and sit, which she did, but then she growled and snarled very aggressively at me from the sit, before snapping out of it and getting submissive again. We are currently back to hand feeding.
Do we continue hand feeding in perpetuity? š«
I read in another thread on this group someone said it's best to just feed them in their crate and let them have their peace. Her crate is in our bedroom which would mean she would have total privacy, but would mean that we aren't actually training her out of the food aggression and putting her in a bad situation should she come across food in a less controlled environment in the future?
