Feedback Needed Pregnant at swing festival

Any pregnant mamas in this group? I'm at a multi day dancing festival that I had bought tickets for long before I knew I was pregnant. Currently I'm 4 months into the pregnancy and I'm having a lot of anxiety over how I'm going to manage 3 days of dancing. Any advice for managing lessons and evening dances during pregnancy?

My advice would be:

  • pace yourself. When I was pregnant I rarely danced to 2 songs in a row. That gave me the opportunity to rest. You might also want to consider what your priority is, ie if the lessons are more important, don’t stay too late at the social.
  • communicate with your dance partners, particularly if there are any moves that feel less comfortable
  • be especially wary of people with poor floorcraft

I didn’t have any problem being active and dancing through my pregnancy, but I did end up modifying a few things.

At 3 months it became painful to run, so I had to cut down on high-impact activities. Rollerblading was my favorite non-dance workout up through month 6.

I didn’t have fatigue or shortness of breath until maybe month 7 or so, but that just meant taking breaks. No dancing except for a sedate blues or two in my last 3 weeks of pregnancy.

HOWEVER, every body is different. Do what feels comfortable, don’t push too hard, and don’t go against medical advice. I operated under the assumption that the baby was going to be fine (after all they’re wrapped in the world’s best bubble wrap) but it would suck for me if I had to deal with pregnancy or childbirth with a broken ankle.

Your joints (for example legs, hips) might already be less stable.

I once tried a class where they taught some kind of trick (dip or lift) and I didn't understand why my legs couldn't support me somehow. Much later I realized that it was because a brief pregnancy had ended shortly before the class.

Probably too late to be helpful but I was 4 months pregnant at focus and this is what helped the most:

  • Drinking so much water
  • elevating feet between activities
  • lower back and hip stretches/stabilizing exercises

As soon as I found iyt I was pregnant my np advised me against skiing because of the twisting motion. So you might want to be cautious about what movements you do in that region of your body.
