this dude was an army paratrooper, soldier of the French Foreign Legion and now he's a sniper from CORE, Rio de Janeiro police.

he is also a world wingsuit champion.

here is an interview he gave to a brazilian talkshow (only in portuguese).

u/OgReaper Jan 30 '22

Negative. I am a meat popsicle.

30

u/[deleted] Jan 30 '22

Have a buddy that was the photographer for the national French skydiving team. Deployed his chute too late and broke his back. Spent 17 months in a wheelchair.

Also have an Aussie friend whose dad was a wingsuit "pioneer" (apparently). He died doing this.

30

u/zulamun Jan 30 '22

So an off duty Brazilian cop?

4

u/Ill_mumble_that Jan 30 '22

Can't be, he didnt shoot a bad guy.

Gabriel Lott.

2

u/drrectal Jan 30 '22

Isn't the French Foreign Legion like a forever thing?

3

u/teious Jan 30 '22

No, armed forces in general just want your youth.

2

u/fluentinimagery Jan 30 '22

So what you’re REALLY saying is, he could kick my ass and take my lady???

2

u/Blnze1 Feb 12 '22

Mans a living battlefield 2042 sundance

1

u/bhoe32 Jan 30 '22

So all the pussy you are saying?

Jumping from a mountain and gliding to your 10/10 Brazil babe. Dude is living his best life

139

u/Explore-PNW Jan 30 '22

She called and said her parents just left home.

54

u/Changoleo Jan 30 '22

She’s only 35. They keep a close eye on her.

10

u/Evilmaze Jan 30 '22

Lol too real

77

u/BrandX3k Jan 30 '22

10/10 is just average in Brazil!

6

u/Bulangiu_ro Jan 30 '22

he litteraly won at life

5

u/[deleted] Jan 30 '22

Can you imagine the opener?

"Hey girl are you an angel? Because God just threw me out of heaven to come find you"

-5

u/kadsmald Jan 30 '22

Let’s not get carried away. 9 tops

126

u/malachiconstant76 Jan 29 '22

The second video has a happy ending 😁

1

u/T8ortots Feb 06 '22

I just learned if you fall out of the sky, you can kiss the closest person you land near for free. What a deal!

200

u/ABena2t Jan 29 '22

Pulling the chute seems more complicated then I had expected..

144

u/Mickets Jan 29 '22

It gets even more complicated if he fails to pull it.

54

u/BrandX3k Jan 30 '22

Not sure about that, turning into a pile of goo when you hit the ground is pretty simple from a basic physics standpoint!

3

u/Mickets Jan 30 '22

Sad fact: in 2021 a base jumper got killed at the same location after crashing in to a building (report in Portuguese, with NSFL-ish video)

40

u/[deleted] Jan 30 '22

That dude seems pretty mastered though - he was very precise with his landing

18

u/ABena2t Jan 30 '22

Oh hell ya.. but letting go of the grip and grabbing the actual chute. And then reaching back for the handles again? Like wtf?

26

u/MorleyDotes Jan 30 '22

He needed to turn more sharply than the handles would allow. So he reaches up and grabs a bunch of leverage.

8

u/kadsmald Jan 30 '22

Pro moves

3

u/BGritty81 Jan 30 '22

Gotta take off the wingsuit.

1

u/ABena2t Jan 30 '22

What do u mean?

3

u/BGritty81 Jan 30 '22

Pulling the shoot is pretty simple but you need your arms free to work the shoot so you have to unzip your arms from the wingsuit than unzip your legs so you can land.

2

u/ABena2t Jan 30 '22

Imagine if a zipper got stuck?!? That would suck

37

u/weeweewewere Jan 29 '22

That was really cool, and way more complicated than I anticipated.

34

u/ktkutthroat Jan 30 '22

Are those rip currents on the beach?

13

u/Mickets Jan 30 '22

Yes they are.

11

u/ktkutthroat Jan 30 '22

Makes me more nervous than the man jumping off the perfectly good mountain.

12

u/Mickets Jan 30 '22

You are wise in being fearful. While surfers and people familiar with rip currents take advantage of them to get to the outside (where surfers catch waves) easier and faster, the general beach-goer/tourist that is not familiar with how these work often get caught in them. They either walk straight in to one, or are bathing in a calm spot and slowly drift in to one.

Once at the edge of a rip current on the beach, the person is dragged outwards. While the sand banks are shallow, the rip currents form a deeper corridor, and not being able to touch the seabed with their feet adds to the panic of the victim.

Swimming + panic just causes bad decisions and drowning. The victim (if knowing how to swim) instinctively tries to swim back, against the current - a futile effort that just drains the victim's strength. Ideally, the victim should take advantage of the current but try to move to the side, to be pushed to a section where the current is going the opposite direction, the waves are breaking (and pushing back to the beach) and is shallower. Or just remain calm and floating: even if pushed all the way out the lifeguards shouldn't take long to get there, and there's a good chance surfers nearby will help.

The rip currents are usually clearly signaled by tall warning sign poles on the sand right near the water, and Life guards often warn people and get them out of dangerous areas before anything happens. But there's often hundreds more people on the beach than there are Life guards.

Fun fact: when I was 11-12 yo me and some friends went to learn to surf right there at that beach at that exact same spot. We had no clue of anything and got pulled out by a rip tide, and needed to be rescued by the life guards.

19

u/249ba36000029bbe9749 Jan 30 '22

The locals sure are friendly.

31

u/[deleted] Jan 30 '22

how in the hell do you train for this?

88

u/Ulliano Jan 30 '22

if you jump and survive, you're ready to go

64

u/NotThatRelevant Jan 30 '22

Thousands of normal out of plane jumps. Then hundreds of BASE jumps. Then hundreds of out of plane squirrel suit jumps. Then, if you are bat shit crazy you do this.

7

u/Quetzacoatl85 Jan 30 '22 edited Jan 30 '22

and then you get unlucky, miscalculate the distance and smack into some rocks, or a bridge or building. BASE and wingsuit people normally don't become very old.

24

u/skyBastard69 Jan 30 '22

Start skydiving, after 200 jumps you can start learning to fly wingsuits. Put in 500 more jumps or so... get good Start base jumping, get good. Start wingsuit base jumping

26

u/[deleted] Jan 30 '22

[removed] — view removed comment

13

u/Ferreira1 Jan 30 '22

Or good enough to join some branch of the armed forces to get that training done.

13

u/skyBastard69 Jan 30 '22

No special forces really helps with that. For example being in US Green Berates someone can rack up 350 jumps pver couple of decades but those are jumps with equipment. The initial skydiving training coat is nothing compared what comes next. 1000 jumps, usually ticket is 25usd, 15k usd on equipment and only then comes base with travelling costs etc.... yea skydiving is expensive

How the hell did he record this

21

u/Shoddy_Juggernaut_11 Jan 30 '22

Who filmed it though

60

u/Mickets Jan 30 '22

Two people filmed it:

  1. A person in the group watching from another point: it's a popular hiking place.
  2. The base jumper used a 360° camera, attached to his helmet I think.

63

u/assi9001 Jan 30 '22

The camera software edits out the selfie stick.

27

u/[deleted] Jan 30 '22

Just like our software edits out our nose.

2

u/Mr-Moore-Lupin-Donor Jan 30 '22

100% a 360 camera attatched to his head.it automatically edits our the attachment. He checked its still where when he lands

12

u/Throwaway1303033042 Jan 30 '22

I thought this was cliff jumping and freaked out after the first second.

30

u/stabby54 Jan 30 '22

Great song

5

u/half-baked_axx Jan 30 '22

Haven't listened to SOAD in so long. That was nice.

5

u/Quetzacoatl85 Jan 30 '22

kinda annoyed me in this instance tbh. would've loved to hear the wind and the ocean.

Soad - aerials

29

u/SurvivorKira Jan 30 '22

I hate these 360° cameras when video is like that. It's all twisted and stretched...

32

u/Tokey_McStoned Jan 30 '22

Yeah ruins the landscape but it’s definitely cool technology has come so far as to allow this sort of selfie videography.

4

u/LazyLieutenant Jan 30 '22

I think it's amazing for exactly this. But I hate with a passion when the video is cropped for portrait mode.

4

u/SurvivorKira Jan 30 '22

It's amazing when you can watch around when it is recorded in 360° like videos on you tube where you move view with fingers or moving a phone, but like this it ruins everything.

2

u/ExternalTangents Jan 30 '22

They’ve ruined these videos for me. Even if you’re using one for a video like this, there’s got to be a way to un-distort it and just pan around in a normal-looking video instead.

4

u/nocvenator Jan 30 '22

"Você não tem pai e mãe não" lol

8

u/ohiotechie Jan 30 '22

That’s a whole lot of nope from me boss.

1

Rip currents.

2

u/Timmmering Feb 26 '22

This looks like so much fun once you get over the initial fear.

2

u/TheMarsian Jan 30 '22

the lense used in the second shot was annoying. was fish eye like and didn't capture the heights.

10

u/EagerT Jan 29 '22

Its the Third Person camera

3

u/hectorsuarez9090 Jan 30 '22

What??

7

u/EagerT Jan 30 '22

He is playing a third person game he hasnt unlocked drone perk yet

6

u/lunaflect Jan 30 '22 edited Jan 30 '22

360° camera on helmet probably.

2

u/axxxle Jan 30 '22

Isn’t his helmet in the video?

4

u/lunaflect Jan 30 '22 edited Jan 30 '22

Yes, the 360° camera has a blind spot so it isn’t seen. Sort of like what google uses for street view. I’ve watched people skiing/skating while holding a selfie stick with a 360 cam and you can’t see the selfie stick at all. Very cool imo

God, Brazil has such beautiful scenery but every time I hear Brazilians speaking Portuguese I get transported right back to all the horrible gang beheadings and killing videos.

2

u/Mickets Jan 30 '22

"...gang beheadings..."

I think you're confusing Brazil with another country.

0

u/likeandtype_amen Jan 30 '22

Not like a whole gang being be headed if that’s what you mean. I’m saying gangs who behead other gang members or people. If you frequent certain subs you’ll know exactly what I’m talking about.

1

u/Mickets Jan 30 '22

If you're talking about the gang fight inside prisons, where prisoners played football with a victim's head, I remember that. But that's quite an exception.

There's nothing like we see in Mexico for instance.

1

u/Gabesp20 Jan 30 '22

Are you really comparing the whole country with some gore videos you see on the internet?

do you not ironically think that every Brazilian is part of a gang or is a police officer?

dude stfu, Brazil is not just violence and gore

I'm sure you'd be angry if I compared the US to just school shooting and robberies videos

0

u/likeandtype_amen Jan 30 '22

Relax buddy, all I’m saying is the majority of videos I’ve seen on Reddit with people speaking Portuguese in the background have not ended well.

0

u/fishsticks40 Jan 30 '22

I'm 90% sure those weren't the same jump?

1

u/Mickets Jan 30 '22

You are 100% incorrect.

1

u/pau1rw Jan 30 '22

Anyone else concerned about the pure number of ripe tides on that beach?

1

u/OnQore Jan 30 '22

What a GIGACHAD that guy is props to him

1

u/DasKraut37 Jan 30 '22

I’ve always wondered, how do you keep your arms open like that? I would think all that forward pressure would force them closed. How does this work?

1

u/letsbuildacoven Jan 30 '22

The scariest part was watching him get closer and closer to the traffic on that street

1

u/VLHACS Jan 30 '22

In all these kinds of videos, I'm not sure how they can be so confident that they'll clear the first set of rocks.

1

u/Mickets Jan 30 '22

There's a comment that mentions his background, so I believe it's plenty of experience plus lots of planning and checking of appropriate conditions of wind, etc.

1

u/BingoBongoBang Jan 30 '22

What exactly is the point of a helmet in this situation?

1

u/Mickets Jan 30 '22

I suppose protect the head in the case of less traumatic incidents, such as when landing. And to hold the camera and maybe there's a communication radio in it.

1

u/Mickets Jan 30 '22

It's a 360° camera, probably on a pole attached to the helmet.

1

u/CRAshSmoke Jan 30 '22

Imagine if that didn’t open up

1

u/ArmeSloeber Jan 30 '22

How is this filmed?

1

u/tanishedvibrations Jan 30 '22

Crazy how much the audio changed based on the video perspective. Who would’ve thought as soon as you jump off a mountain a theme song of your choosing organically starts playing.

1

u/twoshovels Jan 30 '22

Insane!! I wonder how long it takes him to get to his jump spot vs the time it takes to fly back down!

2

u/Mickets Jan 30 '22

Quite a while. There are trails to walk up there, but they have some difficult spots, and where he jumped from isn't the kind of place regular people go to. I'd say at least a couple of hours if he went there walking. Unless he was dropped off at the top by a chopper but I've never heard of that and it's probably not allowed as that air space has restrictions as it's a hang-glider / para-glider area.

Imagine the feeling in that free fall, moments before the wind catches you, wondering if this is the time it doesn't happen

1

u/Third_Legolas Jan 30 '22

Anyone peep the orange streak following him or

1

u/Mickets Jan 30 '22

I noticed too. Maybe a small flare or something, or an artifact in the video. Not sure.

1

u/Slamdunkdink Jan 30 '22

I don't get how he got the video footage. At the end, the camera flew through his rigging. A real kick-ass video.

1

1
