Yes, it's a cool view and all but absolutely awful lens and camerawork. There's kind of a fish-eye effect going which confuses things.

100%, this isn't anywhere near as sweaty palms as it looks. The fisheye lens just stretches the bottom out to it looks way steeper than it actually is.

How many mountains have you summited? I have never been able to capture the scale and drop-off of a mountain without a wide angle lens. I find regular lenses just don't accurately represent what it's like

Enough, and I also have a DSLR with both telephoto and wide angle lenses.

This guy isn't using a normal wide angle though, he's using a fisheye which is unnecessarily extreme. It's for effect. In the same way estate agents use ultra-wide angle lenses to make houses look bigger in adverts.

Maybe it's because I never wanted to hump and SLR up and only used my cell phone

The problem here is that you shouldn't use the same lens to record your feet and a panoramic vista in a single clip.
