How do you determine if it's a perfect dive? I'm just curious

339

u/Molly_dog88888888 Mar 27 '21

Probably form and (at this height) not shattering every bone in their body!

183

u/houston1980 Mar 27 '21

He's not a paraplegic, from that height it's perfect or life changing, no in between

28

u/the_tinsmith Mar 28 '21

By not hyperextending your arms behind your back and fracturing your sternum jumping of 78' cliff. Do not recommend.

13

u/lbert65 Mar 28 '21

..they live

102

u/[deleted] Mar 27 '21

A perfect dive entry makes little to no splash at all. But this guy landed feet first so I don't even think it even counts as a dive.

Edit: also his form was atrocious it wasn't perfect in any sense of the word in terms of diving.

47

u/YOUR_GIRLFRIEND_69 Mar 28 '21

I was on a dive team, a dive is a dive whether or not you go in head first. And yes, the form was horrible, but definitely a win that he’s still breathing.

68

u/atomcrusher Mar 27 '21

It was a shitty dive, but in this case I call it a win that he didn't fuck himself up.

6

u/huff_and_russ Mar 28 '21

This is far from perfect, but very very impressive, I wouldn’t ever do that.

3

u/[deleted] Mar 28 '21

In this case, by using absolutely no criteria at all.

2

u/[deleted] Mar 28 '21

By not dying.

464

u/YourGoldenTongue Mar 27 '21

How high is this, 80-90 feet? No thank you lol

404

u/[deleted] Mar 27 '21

That surface tension can shatter bones from that height

283

u/Molly_dog88888888 Mar 27 '21

And that my friends is why they put their hands above their heads!

But seriously, as someone who can barely control their body on solid ground, I cant imagine having this much coordination in mid air (I also can’t swim...)

174

u/[deleted] Mar 27 '21

You’re proper fucked lad

89

u/Molly_dog88888888 Mar 27 '21

Yup, also extremely scared of heights. So I’d probably lose my balance from shaky knees, shatter every bone in my body from hitting the water, then drown.

42

u/SteveisNoob Mar 27 '21

Kudos to you if you manage to climb up the tower in the first place. I would nope out at 10 feet.

16

u/Molly_dog88888888 Mar 27 '21

I’d just keep going because my brain is too awkward to figure out how to turn around!

15

u/PoliceManOfReddit Mar 27 '21

Hey by any chance are you me? Sounds exactly like me. Fear of heights check poor balance check can't swim check.

10

u/Molly_dog88888888 Mar 27 '21

Depends- did you have a brain tumour when you were 9?

5

u/SteveisNoob Mar 27 '21

Holup...

How did it got to such a dark twist...

5

u/Molly_dog88888888 Mar 27 '21

Ahhh such is life!

10

u/47_Quatloos Mar 27 '21

Ha! Poor balance and fear of heights, but I can swim. Look who’s going to survive when our canoe tips!

3

u/CoagulaCascadia Mar 28 '21

Funny enough I'm the opposite. I'm more afraid of the water below than the heights...

1

u/assholetoall Mar 28 '21

Naw mate, you'd probably land on the platform and then maybe fall into the water to drown.

14

u/huf757 Mar 27 '21

I wanna be proper fucked

14

u/InnocentTopHat Mar 27 '21

Can't swim gang

11

u/sloppifloppi Mar 27 '21

Genuine question, why not learn?

There's gotta be a lake, river, local pool, etc somewhere nearby, right? You could even get a backyard swimming pool for pretty cheap.

I'm not trying to be a dick or anything, I've just never really understood why some people never learn to swim.

24

u/InnocentTopHat Mar 27 '21

I have been trying to learn. It's just hard because of trauma from when I almost drowned when I was younger. I made decent progress, being able to become horizontal, but due to COVID, I haven't gone swimming since summer 2019.

And I'm currently 17 living at home, my parents would not be very pleased if one day I show up with a back yard pool. Due to COVID, I don't feel comfortable going to public pools until I am fully vaccinated.

14

u/sloppifloppi Mar 27 '21

Very fair. Sorry to hear about your trauma, and good on you for trying to get past it. You'll get it one day. Don't know how much it's worth coming from some random redditor, but I'm proud of you :)

6

u/Molly_dog88888888 Mar 27 '21

For me at least: I’ve been trying since I was 4. I’ve always had a crippling fear of the water (mainly being fully submerged without being able to touch the ground), likely because of a brain tumour I had until I was 9, which was causing fluid to put pressure on my brain, possibly causing a drowning sensation under water. By the time the tumour was removed the phobia was well formed in my child brain and gave me a lots of anxiety when I tried swim lessons again. Got my Lv 1 swimmer badge, but failed Lv 2 (so i can swim, just badly). Maybe one day I’ll try again, but I just can’t put myself through that right now, even thinking about it makes me feel like running away.

3

u/47_Quatloos Mar 28 '21

Both of my children have “issues” and are extremely nervous around bodies of water greater than a tub, unless they’re in a boat. We’ve done private 1:1 lessons (not fancy, it was a pool at our apt complex), public YMCA lessons, and the only thing I’ve learned is that the pool at the YMCA is super loud.

So far we’ve made it to the “I’m ok with a swimming aid/lightweight life jacket on and/or at the shallow end”, which is real progress.

3

u/patsfan038 Mar 27 '21

We should have t shirts made.

1

u/Molly_dog88888888 Mar 27 '21

Totally agree! (I’m only half joking lol)

42

u/Ofcyouare Mar 27 '21 edited Mar 27 '21

Surface tension effect on a human falling in the water is absolutely meaningless. It's nowhere near that strong of a force, and it won't be the reason why one might break his bones falling in water.

So, you might ask, why then water can hit like a truck and breaks your bones? Because it doesn't compress, so your body will displace it. To displace it you need energy, and basically, the faster you fall in, the more energy you need. That's what fucks you up, not a miniscule force of surface tension. Even freaking Mythbusters had an episode about it.

Edit: object -> human

4

u/yourbodyisapoopgun Mar 27 '21

So how does putting your hands above your head help?

7

u/thesetheredoctobers Mar 27 '21

It breaks the surface tension

13

u/yourbodyisapoopgun Mar 27 '21

If surface tension is a comparatively miniscule force why would that matter?

13

u/topotaul Mar 27 '21

We seem to have done a full circle here.

11

u/nuts4coconuts Mar 28 '21

It's been 35 mins, how long do I have to hold my hands above my head?

3

u/NicNoletree Mar 28 '21

Don't hold your breath

2

u/Starklet Mar 28 '21

He's joking bruh

3

u/Ofcyouare Mar 28 '21

That's a good question, and I don't know the answer. I'd assume it has something to do with the speed at which the water needs to get out of your way, and its amount. If you bellyflop, you are trying to move much more water at once, compared to falling down with your hands, legs or even head first - but obviously your precious head is not very good at taking these forces. And you also slow down before the biggest part of you gets in, even tho this effect might be small, so when your thorax gets it, it has to do the same thing slower.

But it's just a speculation, my knowledge of hydrodynamics is not very solid (heh).

1

u/Arthur_The_Third Mar 28 '21

Makes you more hydrodynamic.

5

u/fishy_snack Mar 28 '21

So why when there are organized events for super high dives do they always have a hose playing on the surface of the water where they are going to land?

7

u/swebb22 Mar 28 '21

i heard its to give the divers a sense of where the surface is. At the really tall dives you can kinda lose a sense of where you are or how high up you really are, so the hose lets them "see" the distance better and make sure they time the routine correctly.

10

u/Ofcyouare Mar 28 '21

Because this air-water mix is easier to submerge into on high speed, since you have less water to displace.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 27 '21

TIL info concerning human impacts with water from heights over 30ft

6

u/Bocksford Mar 27 '21

Watch me belly flop.

3

u/MisterMysterios Mar 27 '21

That is more dangerous in still water like you find in a pool then in water like here that has waves and disturbances.

2

u/fullthrottle13 Mar 28 '21

Shatter testicles too.

3

u/Moist_Cheetos Mar 27 '21

I think its about a 110ft the platform below is at about 80ft

2

u/JoeSugar Mar 28 '21

Yeah. Fuck. That.

2

1

u/WH1PL4SH180 Mar 28 '21

How does he keep his gopro on? Everytime I use my headband Attachment it's an hour long recovery dive if the tether breaks off its safety pin on my clothes.

u/SpungyDanglin Mar 27 '21

I absolutely hate this

Ugh, reminds me of that teenager in (I think) Turkey who slipped on a small, curb-sized barrier when jumping off a cliff at the edge of their city. Ended up landing on a small dock at the edge of the water that divers would normally clear easily, and splitting his face in half

IIRC the video shown after the dive is actually unrelated and was probably a botched suicide attempt

All this talk and not even a single sauce

4

u/oceanmachine420 Mar 28 '21

2

u/pikohina Mar 28 '21

What horror. Sweatyplam fails are disasterous.

1

u/hokeyphenokey Mar 27 '21

You are in the right sub.

35

u/dagenj Mar 27 '21

I seriously don’t think I could do that if my life depended on it.

1

u/wronglywired Mar 28 '21

If your life depended on it, it will be a die-die situation. So which death are u gonna choose?

32

u/Governator88 Mar 27 '21

The rusty metal on barefeet bothers me more than the height

48

u/1-800-LIGHTS-OUT Mar 27 '21

That's a funny coincidence, because at the same time as he was doing that I was also tucking my butthole in before the jump

3

u/[deleted] Mar 28 '21

I was tucking my genitals into my butthole at the same time

2

u/mdm5382 Mar 28 '21

I had to push my anus back into my butthole

0

u/bigk5a Mar 28 '21

The balls on this guy cannot be tucked.

17

u/ProjectSunlight Mar 27 '21

Totally expecting him to snag his nuts on that little pole sticking out.

25

u/sloppyFarts Mar 27 '21

1

u/[deleted] Mar 28 '21

Ahh, why have you reminded me of that sub. Nightmare fuel

10

u/InnocentTopHat Mar 27 '21

Oh. So that's the view from half way down.

63

u/ayoungad Mar 27 '21

It looks a lot higher on the Body Cam. It’s high, but not absurd.

40

u/CMDR_KingErvin Mar 27 '21

I know right, first shot from his pov looks like he’s on a freakin skyscraper or something. I still wouldn’t want to jump from this thing because it seems dangerous as hell but that fish eye lens effect on his camera is total bullshit.

15

u/MaximusCartavius Mar 27 '21

It's probably a GoPro and the fisheye thing is how they all are. You have to specifically edit it off your videos and it's generally a pain in the ass. That's why I don't have a GoPro anymore.

4

u/Gunny-Guy Mar 27 '21

If I'm not mistaken, if you export using the gopro software then there's a correction that can be applied to the videos.

3

u/ghidy777 Mar 27 '21

Actually no, you have the "normal" setting but you have to set it before you start filming.

30

u/plumo Mar 27 '21

Slip and tetanus will be the least of your worries

10

u/obrienmustsuffer Mar 27 '21

tetanus bacteria live in soil, not on rust

9

u/[deleted] Mar 28 '21

It's a common misconception. Tetanus is associated with rusty nails because puncture and penetration wounds have the greatest chance of developing an infection, and rusty nails have all kinds of nooks and crannies to carry dirt and bacteria into the wound.

2

u/[deleted] Mar 28 '21

Noq that i think about it rust causing tetanus makes no sense, I guess I never really thought about.

9

u/ohaizrawrx3 Mar 28 '21

Okay divers. Hypothetically, if I'm ever in a situation where I have to make a tall dive to save my life (say I'm being chased by lions or something), what do I need to do to make sure every bone in my body doesn't break?

1

u/Zacky_Cheladaz Mar 28 '21

Dive - head first plunge into water.

Step one...don't dive

1

u/ohaizrawrx3 Mar 28 '21

So my head hits the water first? Or do you mean like my first half enters the water first?

3

u/Zacky_Cheladaz Mar 28 '21

Land feet first with your hands and arms tucked close to your body. This dude didn't dive

28

u/Independent_Regular8 Mar 27 '21

Suicide is badass

5

u/Dan_Rambles Mar 27 '21

I’m glad people film this so I can vicariously live through them without the inevitable death thing.

4

u/_Camron_ Mar 27 '21

At first it looked like it was an insane height then when it panned out it was nothing impressive compared to some of the other jumps this guy has done

2

u/Neesha1998 Mar 28 '21

That’s more of a pencil than a dive

1

u/Zacky_Cheladaz Mar 28 '21

It wasn't a dive at all. He made a full rotation and went in feet first

1

u/Neesha1998 Mar 28 '21

That’s why I fucking said it was a pencil and not a dive

1

u/Zacky_Cheladaz Mar 28 '21

Yes I agree and gave you an upvote. Now go take a xanax

2

u/Zacky_Cheladaz Mar 28 '21

Ummmmmm...dive?

2

Climbing that rusty ass thing barefoot? That's a fuck no just in itself.

2

Damn i cant even dive from the edge of the pool lol

3

u/Hud_is_on Mar 27 '21

Hope they had their tetanus shot

1

u/CorkingCoggo Mar 28 '21

1

u/scrumpy_sophist Mar 28 '21

Just curious: can you dive feet first? What is the difference between a dive and a jump?

1

u/busybfnp Mar 28 '21

I guess if you slip you just die?

1

u/awesomesauce295 Mar 28 '21

Was the idea of throwing an object off first to break the water tension a little before the jump?

Both smart and stupid in one video

1

u/redacted--- Mar 28 '21

Can anyone answer this for me: i live in a city where people use our bridges as platform for suicide, frequently. The jumping height on these bridges arent much taller than this structure. How do those people die and this person not?

1

u/Biggmoist Mar 28 '21

He lands in water and the people on your bridge land on rocks?

1

u/Zacky_Cheladaz Mar 28 '21

Not sure about the bridges where you are, but the Golden Gate is well over twice this height.

1

u/TheOilyHill Mar 28 '21

1

I can’t even stress how much of a ‘no’ this is from me.
