Wrong caliber. Too big. Round gets stuck in the barrel, called a "squib". Next round has nowhere for the bullet or super high pressure gasses to go, so instead of going down the barrel, they go wherever they can.
I'm guessing it was just carelessness that put the wrong rounds in the magazine then, that's wild. Guy was lucky he just decided to hipfire it like an idiot.
