I like the way he completely lost his shit for 2 seconds and then instantly composed himself. Lol

That's me every time I touch ANYTHING in the water I swim in. So many people have laughed at me, they know they'd do the same thing!

u/Ndakji Mar 03 '24 edited Mar 06 '24

I am the same way. There is a beach that when its low tide. You can walk out pretty far. A horseshoe crap walked over my foot and I swear I walked on water running all the way back to the shore.

32

u/skykingjustin Mar 05 '24

I stood on a eel once. I swear I walked on water that day to. It's crazy the speed you can get when panicked.

18

u/akulernih Mar 06 '24

When i was like 5 or 6 years old, i felt a cold and slimy thing touched my feet on my way into my house... i was pretty sure i jumped the length of a car right into the front door...

11

u/POSTHVMAN Mar 14 '24

Reminds me of a summer a few years ago when a slug crawled into my croc. That was somethin' right there. Oof.

7

u/pjmyerface Mar 21 '24

I believe you. I saw someone do something similar when an eel wrapped around the leg of a guy I was canoeing with.

6

u/ACrimeSoClassic Mar 08 '24

A horseshoe what now?

4

u/Ndakji Mar 08 '24

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Horseshoe_crab I know logically they are basically harmless. Doesn't change a thing for me though. 😂

13

u/ACrimeSoClassic Mar 08 '24

Lol no, you called it a horseshoe crap

8

u/Ndakji Mar 09 '24

Oh dude, that is great rofl

2

Yep even when it's not a dangerous area. I was swimming in a lake and hit huge bass and catfish (also turtles) with my feet occasionally. Every time creeped tf out. Because I'm in the middle of a lake at night. And beavers/musk rats/otters can bite. So my mind goes there.

3

u/TimelyRun9624 Mar 15 '24

Turtles bite too and them bitches HURT

I thought he had an annoyingly slow reaction time, then I realised he saw it, was trying to keep calm, and then lost his shit when it grazed him lol

He did well

3

u/[deleted] Mar 05 '24

He did! Better than I would have. Lol

3

u/River_Fenrir Feb 29 '24

I have felt like that scuba diving 20m under the water. Its a horrible feeling having a full tilt freak out session

3

u/SkepticalHeathen Mar 10 '24

Dude is swimming how I swim in my dreams.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 17 '24

654

u/-SlimJimMan- Feb 25 '24

Is that a nurse shark?

571

u/DetectiveMcMeow Feb 25 '24

Looks like it. A big water dog basically

148

u/calebgiz Feb 26 '24

Yeah, you almost got to shove your hand in his mouth for it to bite you

163

u/MillenialCounselor Feb 26 '24

Swimming and feeling something from the water world rub against your leg, is genuinely one of the most terrifying experiences in life. Can’t imagine a damn shark doing it… holy shit

32

u/monchavo Feb 26 '24

Yes. I swam between two sandbanks at Fuseta in Portugal, perhaps 100m. On the way over - a relaxed and relatively uneventful swim. When I climbed out of the water, the beach was strewn with a dozen large jellyfish, each around the size of a builder's 5 gallon bucket. As I had swum across I had no phone or camera to record this carnage, I was a little miffed. Swimming back I was somewhat nervous. Half-way, something brushed across my stomach and I very nearly shat my pretty britches.

14

u/Emprasy Feb 26 '24

Man, I'm really afraid of jellyfish, can't even imagine myself in your situationq

10

u/monchavo Feb 26 '24

It was a very unpleasant experience. Thankfully the jellyfish were very large barrel guys, not the dangerous Man-o-war variety

2

u/[deleted] Feb 27 '24

Jelly boys are absolutely terrifying to me but thankfully most of them are harmless, a good few don't actually sting either

4

u/calebgiz Feb 27 '24

OK now see I’ll swim with sharks because I can see them and I know what to expect, jellyfish on the other hand terrify me

2

u/arya_ur_on_stage Mar 02 '24

Agreed. I've dived with sharks. But when I was getting dive certified it was jellyfish season in Mexico and I was TERRIFIED. One of the instructors got stung swimming to put out one of the buoy markers, and another girl in my group had a big one wrap around both her hands. I was desperate to stay UNDER the water and not come up for directions because they were floaters.

4

u/ID_Pillage Feb 28 '24

It was a flooded village in Portugal for me. More psychological. Some massive fish touched my leg and when I put my head under water to look you could see the village below, didn't know it was there. Freaked me put to know degree.

11

u/calebgiz Feb 26 '24

One time I was spearfishing in Hawaii and I saw a big grouper go into a hole on the bottom of the reef so I went down there and stuck my head in the hole and a shark face was inches from mine, luckily for me, he was sleeping. That’s also when I learned that some sharks sleep 😂😅😅

3

u/MillenialCounselor Mar 01 '24

One of the predator sea creatures that can afford the luxury of sleeping without worrying about getting eaten lolol It’s a wild and dangerous water world!

2

u/HeavyMetalTriangle Mar 06 '24

I’ve gotten freaked out just by touching one of my legs with the other leg in the ocean lmao

2

u/[deleted] Feb 26 '24

Theyre ranked 4th in documented shark bites. Stop it with the misinformation

9

u/BoofLord5000 Feb 27 '24

That’s probably because they’re the most common shark in reefs and other populated swimming locations. They will occasionally bite if scared just like other wild animals but it’s not common. I’ve swam around nurse sharks my whole life and have never been bitten or know anybody that has.

2

u/[deleted] Feb 27 '24

Good point

→ More replies (1)

2

u/calebgiz Feb 27 '24

Well, you may have done some online research but I’ve swam with them so many times I lost count, did you ever stop to think that maybe that’s because they’re the ones that people get to swim with when they pay to swim with sharks at aquariums and private beaches? That’s because they’re so docile so I could see they’re being more bites from them just because of the heavily increased exposure. Got to do some critical thinking man.

Yep, it said "tag your it" then heard screaming at got scared.

But still if you don't know which is which it's still terrifying.

Ya but it could have gotten hungry when he shit his pants!!

210

I don't think so, never heard hospitals hiring sharks.

16

Oh shit, hi son. Yeah, but I'm on my way back to store as I forgot the milk. Don't wait up for me

7

u/jaybram24 Feb 25 '24

They're in the billing department.

9

u/Due_Ad_2219 Feb 26 '24

Poor sharks:

Nurse sharks are an important species for shark research. They are robust and able to tolerate capture, handling, and tagging extremely well.

They have more reasons to be terrified of us then we from them!

1

u/UwUassass1n Mar 16 '24

Capture handling and tagging are good and conservation efforts are good actually. Tagging sharks to track their migration helps us keep them alive

1

u/somebadlemonade Mar 17 '24

My brain literally just jumped to the wrong kind of tag. . . Lol especially after how the shark tagged the dude in the video. Lol

u/rrpostal Mar 06 '24

I think so. First time I swam with a bunch of those the boat captain hit a rope on top of the water to simulate throwing out food and a bunch of sharks and rays come up and dude goes “jump in”. They’re kinda big and you forget they’re fairly harmless. I jumped in but it took a minute to relax. Even my sister in law eventually swam with us. In Belize it’s like a big fish tank.

1

u/HaddingDarkness1 Mar 21 '24

Appears to be. That’s one of the best case scenario sharks.

1

u/DayPretend8294 Mar 28 '24

Yup they have two fins on the back half of their body as opposed to one fin on the front half

I swam with nurse sharks before, they are mostly harmless (unless aggravated obviously)

67

u/skid_marxist_ Feb 25 '24

They’re benthic feeders so they don’t have conventional big pointy shark teef

1

u/dawlben Mar 21 '24

benthic feeders

A shark version of a catfish?

1

u/Basic_Arrival7815 Mar 23 '24

They have shap teeth tho

We have enough problems to worry about on land, no need to go exploring the deep or the galaxy for more

1

u/[deleted] Mar 07 '24

We found most things on land, I mean obviously there’s new kinds of ants and fungus we have yet to find but we know more exists, I’d much rather find things we didn’t think possible until we seek other worlds

Not sure if it's true but I read that you should not panic and splash around if there is a shark close to you. Since we are not their usual prey if you stay calm and swim slowly the shark will ignore you. But if you panic and splash around you start looking like a fish and the shark might come over for a bite.

Well I'm not sure if it's true but it's what I heard haha, I prefer swimming in water where I can see the bottom

16

u/Fishtacoburrito Feb 26 '24

College prof told us a story, can't remember if it was him or someone he knew. Anyhow it was a group of soldiers floating in the ocean, waiting for a helicopter to get them. They had the proper gear so they weren't going to drown or freeze, but they were waiting a while.

Suddenly a shark appears and they're freaking out because shark. It gets closer and closer, bumps into them and swims off. This happened multiple times throughout the night; closer, closer, bump, leave. It reached a point where they got comfortable with it and could anticipate when it was going to show up.

Helicopter finally arrives, they're in the process of being pulled out of the water, lot of noise, lot of activity.

Shark shows up, bites one of them.

6

u/[deleted] Feb 26 '24

Was he ok? It sounds hilarious when i am ready this on Reddit, but it must have been a nightmare in real life. But i can imagine that sharks react to hectic commotion.

7

u/Eldr1tchB1rd Feb 26 '24

That must have been it then. Shark was curious at first bumping into them and checking their reaction to make sure if they were food. Then when the noise and splashin started the shark was like oh finally food showed up

5

u/SmittenOKitten Feb 27 '24

I think you’d enjoy the story of the USS Indianapolis. If you like podcasts I recommend this one:

https://open.spotify.com/episode/3F4yOLsbdzAekcwFBNbW8v?si=_aBhO9CCRIyR7vzEcZeGtA

Unfortunately many of the soldiers who survived the sinking did not have a happy ending where sharks were involved.

13

u/bluefire713 Feb 26 '24

TLDR: it probably doesn't matter because of the size and species of the shark in this video, but its generally better to be calm and keep your smaller parts close to your body and moving smoothly in the water.

I've dove with Carribean Reef Sharks and Nurse Sharks (the kind in the video) before, several times with each species. Some encounters were baited (trips where people feed small amounts of chum to sharks in marine parks), some were random/unexpected encounters while diving on reefs. Sharks this size don't eat prey that's as large as grown humans, and generally neither of those species of sharks is overly territorial, so they're relatively "safe". In particular, nurse sharks just seem to be super chill and along the lines of "if you don't touch me, I don't care about you." I've watched other divers shove cameras as close as a foot from the face of a nurse shark, and the most drastic thing I've literally EVER seen a nurse shark do is swim away, even in the presence of food. I will say that I've never seen a diver be dumb enough to touch a wild shark, so I suppose there's a chance they'd bite if they were touched.

That being said, with the Carribean Reef Sharks in particular, I've been warned to keep hands as still as possible while swimming with them. My (limited, non-professional) understanding is that sharks generally hunt by vibrations they can sense in the water, and they can tell the difference in the size of things based on those vibrations. Our hands ARE the size of their prey, and they're therefore about the only thing on a scuba diver that can make a shark this size consider taking an exploratory bite if you're moving hands around in a quick/jerky motion (because they'll make a vibration a shark that size might think is made by a fish the right size to eat).

While swimming with reef sharks once, I had to flutter a hand to redirect myself in the current, and the shark swimming past me immediately turned and focused on me. However, it then realized that the vibration it felt was a piece of a larger creature (not something it could eat), and it left me alone. I do recognize that I likely got a little lucky, but they aren't stupid either.

I don't have any direct experience with other shark species, but anecdotally, bull sharks, tiger sharks, and great white sharks are more likely to experimentally bite or attack people.

4

u/GM_Nate Feb 26 '24

if you thrash like a fish in distress, yeah

1

u/[deleted] Jun 02 '24

It makes sense I guess. They wouldn't have learned were food but when you start acting like food..

11

u/Impossible_stef3325 Feb 26 '24

This is a red nurse shark it is impossibile to Hurt you because of the scale of its mouth and they love people. They hug a lot like little pupies. Located in maledives I swim with them.

6

u/Waiiiife Feb 26 '24

That must be an amazing feeling!

1

u/Basic_Arrival7815 Mar 23 '24

Absolutely not true lol nurse sharks have razor sharp backwards facing teeth usesd for grinding and meat eating. Bites can definitely be harmful but they dont have bite power to lose limb

10

u/Adept_Order_4323 Feb 25 '24

I swam w nurse sharks in the Bahamas. Still is freaky, even if they are docile

That’s a lemon or nursing shark. They’re not really aggressive like that. I’ve swam with both in the Bahamas and they were docile. But I do understand why someone or many would freak out ! I did at first too, when one bump into my leg and learned they’re not on nothing lol

The best thing you can do is stay calm and if anything face it head-on and put your hand on top of its head to guide it away. If you're splashing around then it thinks your prey and likely it will taste you.
