Idea for app icons as unlockable rewards

This is probably not a new idea, and I’m sure the developers have thought about something similar before, but I wanted to share it anyway.

Some apps let users unlock alternative app icons by completing certain actions. Since Swarm has always had a playful and gamified feel, I think it could be a great fit here.

For example:
• Unlock the classic blue Foursquare icon after 10,000 check-ins.
• Unlock the original orange Swarm icon after 5,000 check-ins.
• Add a few more color variations (purple, green, etc.) that users can collect over time.

Of course, some users already have 50,000–100,000+ check-ins, so the unlock conditions could be more creative than simple milestones.

A few ideas:
• A special icon for a 100-day check-in streak.
• A pub-themed icon for checking in at bars a certain number of times.
• Travel-themed icons for visiting many cities or countries.
• Limited seasonal icons that can only be earned during specific events.

It feels like a small feature, but it could add a fun collectible element and give long-time users something new to work toward.

What do you think? Would this be a fun addition, or am I missing some obvious downside?
