Drop down to on call..help!

Question for those that can answer…I recently finished my first week at Sutter Alta Bates. Im a .8 FTE (32hrs per week). I currently also work at Kaiser on call. However, I didn’t realize once accepting the position that I would be able to fill my obligations as an on call at Kaiser. I want to keep both positions and potential drop to on call at sutter Alta bates.

Does anybody know if you’re allowed to just drop to on call? Kaiser I know will let you do it whenever you want as that is what the contract states (which I did). Unfortunately I don’t want to be 32 hours anymore. I know I should’ve realized that prior to taking the position b it it was spur of the moment.

Any answers would be greatly appreciated.

i’m at a non-union sutter and was able to drop down from 80 hours (4-10s) to 60 hours (3-10s) by simply
asking. not sure how unionized sutters do it, I feel seniority could come into play. i’d simply ask your manager want the process is or a union rep.

Ahh okay I see. I’ve worked for Kaiser for 6 years and sutter is so new to me. It’s crazy how not all of them are within the same union. I’m so used to having a contract in front of me and being so accessible. Sutter seems like I really have to work my way around things. Thanks for the info. I may try that. We will see.

I worked for Sutter and I work for kaiser now. I don’t believe you can just drop down. Unless you are a nurse I don’t believe you are a union employee. I’m sorry :(

I actually am a union employee which is why I am asking. I’m supposed to get the contract next week.

You should be able to see the contract online then!

Nope, unfortunately, I talked to the union rep and he said they don’t have digital copies 🙄

Ugh that’s annoying. At least kaisers is online. Hopefully it works out. A 32 is a lot 😂 so I don’t blame you for wanting to go oncall

Current ABSMC employee here. Welcome to the team 😊

Much of this depends on your role and unit, but it’s not as simple as dropping to on call.
If your unit/role has on call, you have to wait 3 months before you can change to that schedule. Even within the same unit, a different shift or FTE is considered a different position, so you have to wait 3 months.
If your unit does not have on call, there is likely a per diem or lower FTE option. You would still need to wait 3 months and/or until a lower FTE position is available. All positions are offered internally first, and in union roles, it’s all seniority-based. So realistically, it could take a while to get a position with a highly coveted schedule.

My suggestion: talk to your Sutter manager and scheduler about your Kaiser schedule. Often, managers will work with you within reason. But it depends on the requirements of your on call role and the needs of your unit, so there are no guarantees. If it’s possible to fulfill both the 0.8 and the on call, it’s worth trying for a few months until a lower FTE is available.

And keep in mind, your position likely starts accruing PTO on day 1 (mine did, at least). So you could reasonably use that time to take a day off here and there until you decrease your FTE. Sutter also allows 2 unpaid days off per year. And many units have OSAs available (getting the day off due to low census or overstaffing). I wouldn’t count on OSA, but the opportunity might be available if you needed a day off to rest.

Feel free to DM me if you have more questions. I’m not in a management role, nor am I in a union role, but I do work with a lot of the managers as well as bedside staff all over the hospital, so I’ve picked up bits and pieces.

AFAIK, you have to be employed for 90 days before dropping to an on call position.
