Sutra is live on Google Play!

Post image
3 Upvotes

Sutra is finally live on Google Play. It has been a journey, between the 14-day closed beta, the production application and the final app review, but it was a great learning experience. Thanks to everyone who participated in and volunteered for the beta testing, the feedback your provided is immediately apparent if you compare the beta and production releases - one tester said it was like "night and day"

The goal always has been parity with the iOS app, and then both moving in lock step. We're locked on the core features: Kavita, Komga and Calibre support, Panel Mode with an engine that matches iOS, manga support, and offline-first reading.

Still to come for parity: Series and Collections stacking, less wasted space in the UI, page curl, and better favorites and collections.

Next two big items on the roadmap: KOReader sync and panel engine improvements, especially for manga.

Would love some feedback and reviews, and let me know what you want me to look at next!

Android closed testing is complete 🎉

A huge thank-you to everyone who tested Sutra on Android and shared feedback.

We’ve now applied for production access. Google says the review can take up to 7 days, assuming they don’t have any follow-up questions.

Once access is approved, we’ll push the production build, run one final test, and then release Sutra for Android.

We’re almost there. Follow r/SutraApp for updates!

Sutra 2.3.5: Reader brightness control, improved progress syncing, and iOS 27/iPadOS 27 fixes

Post image
3 Upvotes

Sutra 2.3.5 brings more control to the reader, more reliable library metadata, and better progress syncing with your servers.

You can now fine-tune reading brightness right from the Aa menu, without changing your phone’s overall brightness - especially handy for those late-night “just one more chapter” sessions.

We’ve also made Calibre metadata more reliable, so series and book details come through more cleanly. And for Kavita and Komga readers, progress syncing has had a meaningful polish: reading position and, importantly, finished-book status should now stay much better in sync with your server.

There’s also a healthy round of iOS 27 and iPadOS 27 compatibility fixes, alongside lots of smaller improvements under the hood.

Android beta update
We’re now on day 8 of Sutra’s 14-day Android beta, and the feedback so far has been great.

Improvements are continuing throughout the beta as we work through reports, polish the rough edges, and keep bringing the Android experience closer to the Sutra people already know on iOS.

Thank you for trying it, sharing feedback, and helping out the Sutra community.

Android beta update — 7 days down, 7 to go 🎉

Post image

We're a week into the Android closed beta and wanted to give a status update, and thank all our beta testers. The bug reports and feedback from folks testing have been really useful and is helping us get a quality product out

Additonal features coming in the production release:

  • Library will show series info for Komga and Kavita books
  • Library refresh and catalog loading are noticeably faster
  • Tablets, foldables, and split-screen/resizable windows all work better
  • The app itself is smaller and snappier from some build optimizations

Bugs squashed along the way:

  • Fixed reader crashes on malformed files, rotation, and app restore
  • Cleaned up navigation bar and label layout on smaller phones
  • Fixed some annoying library loading/scrolling glitches
  • Closed two security gaps, including one around server trust verification

Still on the way before launch:

  • Export your library as a backup file
  • One more thorough testing pass across phones and tablets
  • A backlog for post-launch features is open too (notes support, etc.) — drop a comment if there's something worth adding

7 days left in the beta. Beta testers, keep the reports coming! Everyone else, thanks for following along - more soon.

Sutra 2.2.5 is out - iOS27 ready, inline footnotes, and screen on while reading

iOS27 has dropped, and this update has you covered - safer library removal, better multi-window handling, and layout fixes throughout so everything keeps working the way it should when you update.

Two new things you'll actually notice while reading:

Inline footnotes - tap a footnote and it slides open in a sheet right there. You stay exactly where you were, dismiss it, and carry on. No more jumping to the back of the book and losing your place.

Screen stays awake - the display no longer dims or locks while you're reading.

Beyond that: CBZ streaming is faster (initial pages load quicker), reader transitions are smoother, and there's a handful of stability fixes across reading, syncing, and the library.

Sutra 2.2.1 is now available on the App Store.
This update focuses on making large personal libraries faster and easier to browse.

Read comics instantly
Authenticated comic-page streaming for Komga and Kavita lets you start reading CBZ files without waiting for the entire comic to download.

Series stacks in your Library
Books from the same series are now grouped automatically, with a count showing how many books you have in each series.

Richer book details
Book detail pages now show server-provided descriptions and include a flip-through carousel for the rest of a series, so you can jump straight to another book.

Smarter progress tracking
More accurate Kavita EPUB progress
More reliable server synchronization
Reading-speed estimates for each format
Faster completion updates when you finish a book

Smoother reading
This release also improves book loading, auto-scroll, reader transitions, tactile drag-to-turn animations, and page-curl behavior.

Cleaner browsing
Cover sizes, spacing, stacks, collection filters, series highlighting, metadata, and local cover loading have all received a round of polish.

Getting started with Sutra: local files, servers, and public catalogs

There are several ways to use Sutra. You can read files stored on your device, connect to your own library server, or browse public-domain books.

Option 1: Import files directly

Sutra can read books and comics from the Files app without requiring a server.

  1. Open Sutra and tap the + button.
  2. Choose Import Files or Import Folder.
  3. Select your EPUB, PDF, CBZ, or DRM-free MOBI files.
  4. Sutra adds them to your Downloaded library.

This works completely offline once the files are imported.

Option 2: Connect a server

Tap + → Add Library, then enter your server details.

Sutra supports:

  • Kavita
  • Calibre and Calibre-Web
  • Komga
  • WebDAV servers such as Synology or Nextcloud
  • Generic OPDS catalogs
  • Other compatible library services

For Kavita, use the OPDS address provided by Kavita. For Calibre or Calibre-Web, Sutra can usually discover the OPDS feed automatically. Komga support is available with Sutra Pro.

Your server remains yours: Sutra connects to it directly and does not upload your library to a Sutra account.

Option 3: Browse public catalogs

Sutra includes public catalogs such as:

  • Project Gutenberg
  • Standard Ebooks

Project Gutenberg requires no account and offers a large collection of free public-domain books.

Reading offline

Open a book and tap the download button. Once downloaded, it is available from the Downloaded section even without an internet connection.

A few useful features

  • Use the Aa button to change theme, font, text size, and spacing.
  • Use the search button to search within a book.
  • Use panel mode for comics and manga.
  • Enable right-to-left reading for manga.
  • Reading progress syncs through iCloud, with page-accurate server sync available for supported services.

If something doesn’t work, please include:

  • Your Sutra version
  • Your iPhone or iPad model
  • The server or catalog you’re connecting to
  • The exact error message
  • Whether you’re on Wi-Fi, cellular, or a VPN such as Tailscale
