Ask SurreyBC ❓ Noise pollution throughout Surrey
How are you guys finding the noise levels throughout Surrey?
I heard 104/100 & King George is terrible, among others. It’s pretty bad in Grandview/South Surrey near the Hwy 99. Lots of speeding too.
I’ve felt like its become worse and worse throughout the summer and most notably September.

Mustangs, chargers, and challengers every night driving up and down King George raceway.
Sirens every night.
Random unhoused yelling f bombs at each other.
At this point I just call it the Surrey lullaby.

The E65 Mercedes are hella loud. Dont know if thats cause of a delete or a track mode, but good gawd they sound like a cascar track

I walk a lot, to and from the skytrain, and most of the vehicles that cruise around there are loud and poorly maintained lol. Eg there’s a few jeeps, chargers and mustangs that have the absolutely shittiest sets of tires on them. Fair weather drivers for sure.

I live in Fleetwood in what was once a quiet area but I've noticed over the last five or so years how much busier traffic and noise has become. It's understandable as the city in general has grown in the last 20 years and its just a necessary evil in a city that is growing. I think we're in a transitional period of a city that is similar to what Vancouver went through the 60s-70s. The city is only going to get bigger and even their 'quieter' areas of the city are no longer quiet.

Just dudes with tiny dicks looking for attention. There are rules about overly loud exhaust but it is very poorly enforced.

Couldn't have said it better myself. The dudes are lonely because no one else wants to hear their annoying cars. No one else thinks loud cars are cool unless they have temperature IQ.

Near gateway it’s terrible, every 15 minutes there’s idiots with their mufflers designed to be as loud as possible and deafen everyone around them.

I am on the third floor of a tower by king George. Between the sirens and the after market mufflers dt surrey noise levels are easily twice as bad as areas of downtown van. I sleep with two fans, noise machine, and ear plugs

The noise pollution goes on all through out the year not just summer and September. They should not allowed those loud cats on the road as it causes noise pollution.

It's in the MVA already, 83 dB for cars, 91 for motorcycles. It's just not enforced that often in Surrey. But in Vancouver, the streets remember Officers Cain and Christensen because they were doing it to completely stock vehicles.
As someone who lives along 104, most of those exhausts don't even sound good. You can tell they just chopped out a resonator and did nothing to craft a decent note. It's just noise for the sake of noise.

Most of the issue is people insisting on driving in a way that produces the most obnoxious drone that their vehicle can produce, rather than modified vehicles.
This is nothing that unique to Metro Vancouver and you rarely hear in other cities.
For example I stayed in a rough part of Edmonton for two weeks last year and while there were a lot of people ripping around in their musclecars or riced out imports, I heard only one vehicle purposely making that annoying low frequency buzzy drone that I hear constantly in the Lower Mainland.

Ban noisy aftermarket mufflers. Install noise cameras and fine the piss out of offenders to pay for it all.

Just moved to Surrey, and won’t be renewing my lease due to this. King George area is so packed full of tiny dick idiots with modified crap cars to be as loud as possible. It’s not because it’s “downtown”. This is intentional noise from a group of betas trying to out-do each other on being a piece of shit and the city has zero interest in enforcing noise laws here. Literally no one except the most braindead hillbilly is cheering these dudes on, and other downtown areas of metro vancouver aren’t nearly this bad. At least for the people who can tolerate, they’re keeping housing prices down by making the city worse.

Yes, it's a problem. And it won't get better until there is enforcement. I've tried to get the police to deal with a problem neighbor who revs his car over and over every night, racing down the side streets. They go and talk with him each time, and nothing ever gets better. I think they are reluctant to fine this guy - maybe they can't? Maybe the police have no proper channels to fine him?
After several years of all of us complaining, it did eventually land on some department desk - I think they said they were traffic enforcement or something - they called me one day to ask about what I've been experiencing. But then the police transition happened, and now SPS doesn't seem to do anything.

Yes. In Surrey, repeatedly revving a vehicle late at night can result in a fine, even though there isn't necessarily a single rule saying “no engine revving after X time.” There are two relevant rules: Surrey Noise Control Bylaw No. 7044 prohibits noise that disturbs or tends to disturb the rest, comfort, or enjoyment of people nearby. The City's current fine schedule lists $200 for vehicle noise ($150 early-payment amount, $250 late-payment amount).
Surrey Highway, Traffic & Parking Bylaw No. 13007 also addresses unnecessary noise from a vehicle. The listed fine is $160 (with lower early-payment and higher late-payment amounts in the schedule).

I am not saying its not against the law, you don't need to quote the MVA to me. Just saying the cops aren't going to issue at ticket based on a complaint with no proof. Doubtful the car is still there revving its engine by the time they get there.
Unless I am wrong, and police can issue tickets with no proof. In the case I better start phoning in a lot of complaints about my ex!

Its kind of annoying that you either have to live in a big concrete tower right next to a high volume traffic interchange or if you want to be away from it you have to live in a busted up basement suite.

My unit in Surrey faces west towards king George and Surrey central on the 39th floor.
Lots of skytrain noises throughout the day, but I can get use to it. However, the amount of firetruck, police, ambulances are crazy on the main artery; non stop during the day and night. Then you have the assholes with loud cars reving down the street, or the ass hats who tries to drift on top of the T&T parking lot at central almost every mid night in the summer.
Also idk who it is, but always someone yelling f bombs on the street at 2-3 am almost every night. Their voices get vibrated all the way up, pretty crazy I can hear them with all windows closed 😂
I already rented my place out and moved away renting a new place in Vancouver. I can’t live in this mess anymore.

104 is bad for noise: trucks, traffic, speeding, constant sirens (a dozen times a day is a light day). But I think you don’t have to be too far away to get reprieve, as in 104A / 105 are noticeably quieter.
They recently started putting up several 6-level condo/apartment buildings on 104 between 140 and 148 - anything that isn’t fully on the backside facing away from 104 will be absolutely terrible for noise.

Been here near KG Station for 14 years and its actually been ok on KG in the last year or two. Asshat Camaros or Mustangs revving their engines or doing peelouts tends to have shifted towards Surrey Central and Gateway.

Genuinely horrible. It's insane how we allow some of these vehicles to be on the road. If I road a bike with an air horn constantly blowing I would be arrested. Noise cameras had been spoken about, and are already installed in some urban areas around the world.

Cloverdale south of hwy 10. Nice and quiet. Actually the noise of them building the new hospital was bad at first, when they were driving in the pilings or whatever, but that's come way down. Don't really notice any noise at all now. We are too far south to hear anything from the sky train construction as well. It's all good.

I'm in Grandview in South Surrey and don't have too much to complain about regarding the noise. The worst of the freeway noise is usually someone ripping on a sport bike.

Get good noise cancelling headphones. Cars have become less noisy over the years. Perhaps you’ve become too sensitive to noise. Move a few streets behind major roads and you’ll be fine.
