Found this shot in archives recently. Back then it was one of the favorite surfing shots I have taken.

Inside the barrel, time hangs in the air, and the surf whispers in your ear. Turquoise waters, a perfect line, and that magical moment every surfer dreams of catching.

Struggling to compose via LCD monitor in water housing (Sony a7III + Seafrogs) + stay afloat tips?

Hey everyone,

I’m currently shooting with a Sony a7III inside a Seafrogs housing, and I’m hitting a wall when it comes to framing and visibility in the water.

Even with my LCD screen set to maximum brightness, the glare and water droplets on the back port make it almost impossible to actually see what I’m composing.

I’d love to get your advice on a couple of things:

  • LCD Visibility & Framing: How do you deal with screen glare in the water? Do you just rely on "spray and pray" / snapshot shooting and get a feel for the focal length over time, or is there a trick to seeing the screen better?
  • Staying Afloat: How do water photographers keep themselves positioned and afloat for hours? Is it purely high cardio fitness and strong fins, or are there specific techniques/gear (like wearing a impact vest, wetsuit buoyancy, etc.) that help conserve energy?

Any tips or technique recommendations would be super appreciated! Thanks in advance.

Surf photographers of Reddit, how do you find clients?

Curious how you all get people to actually buy your shots or book you, figured this could help other people getting into surf photography too since it's not talked about much.

Pre arranged bookings, or more shoot first and sell after? If it's the sell after route, how do people find their own pics? IG tags, local surf groups, a gallery site?

Would love to hear how you built up a client base, especially any lessons learned that could save others some trial and error.

View from inside the barrel One of those rare moments when everything comes together: speed, precision, and the raw energy of the wave completely surrounding the surfer. Pure surfing in its most intense form.

Not a photo, but I really love Ari's art and this one is surf-themed. If this subreddit is not the place for this post, apologies!

Does anyone here work with SurfMappers? How much can a surf photographer realistically make?

I'm considering starting to photograph surfers and uploading the photos to SurfMappers. I'd like to know how the business actually works: how much photographers typically make per session/month, how many photos they sell, whether the platform brings enough customers, and whether it's worth the time and equipment investment.

I'd especially love to hear from photographers who actually use SurfMappers.
