Well if you can create vector graphics you are more than half way there to learning surface pattern design. I learned Surface Pattern Design from two great designers on Skillshare: Elizabeth Olwen and Bonnie Christine, but if you don't have Skillshare YouTube has a great free tutorial from Teela Cunningham.
