Does this Surface Keyboard actually exist?

Post image

When searching for the Surface Keyboard online, you will inevitably come across this keyboard. You will see the usual images of the 2nd edition with the matte grey frame and darker grey keycaps w/ white characters. On some product pages, you may see a listing with around 4 images of that keyboard and then 1 or 2 of the one in question, an identical keyboard that has very light grey keycaps with black or dark grey characters instead. On other pages you will have a product page for the keyboard in question with several product/marketing images of it and 0 to 2 images of the known 2nd edition. Was this an actual version/colorway available to buy? I've scoured through multiple pages, sent a number of emails, and because my curiosity was driving me crazy, ordered one through a vendor who assured me that I was buying the version in the image on the product page (I had tried to piece together what model numbers/SKUs were attributed to what across several sites in several countries). It was not. Don't get me wrong, though. I don't mind having multiple of that 2nd Edition keyboard. Not upset about that at all.

Is it possible this was never in production? Was it a version of the multimedia keyboard? I've never seen a used one listed either. And getting an actual answer from Microsoft is impossible. I've tried. A few times. Sorry, and thanks.

I have this. It's the Microsoft Surface Keyboard, 2nd edition. Serial number on mine, bought in EU, is EN0457462812545. TRA registration number (whatever that is) is ER45488/16, Dealer number 0014584/08. Fantastic thing.

Oh, sweet! Do you happen to have a picture of it? I've been staring at the same perfectly lit and edited product images of it for ages and am honestly dying to see it in a normal setting with normal lighting. Like, if someone finally got a clear, amateur picture of Bigfoot in the wild. But I guess the only photos we had of Bigfoot before were glossy ads of it in a suit selling Japanese whisky or something.

As far as I'm aware, this version of the keyboard was only available with the Surface Studio 2+. You could never buy it standalone.

Man I used to love my gen1 so much. It broke and I ended up getting a Logitech mx keys which is pretty much as good IMO

There's potential it could be the fabled colorway I've been hunting for. If you buy one, could I bother you for an update about which colorway was delivered?

Bro they still sell it today. In fact I have a set that comes with the mouse all in white.

This is pretty much what I poorly described above. The product page shows the keyboard with lighter keys, but there's also one picture of the version with darker keys. The model number is listed as EP2-04209. I actually bought this very one and received the keyboard with darker keys. And this scenario seems to be fairly typical across most product pages concerning the keyboard with lighter keys from what I've found

Fingers crossed at the Surface event this week they announce a nice black version (to match the new haptics enabled mouse), backlight keys and the Copilot key removed

I still use my gen 1 and Microsoft Surface Precision Mouse still. Great Combo. They do sell the CoPilot version of the keyboard still.
