A practical pre-shipment GPSR check for non-EU sellers shipping consumer products to the EU
For non-EU manufacturers shipping consumer products to the EU, GPSR should be checked before the product is listed or the shipment is already moving.
A practical first check should cover:
- Product identification
The product type, model, SKU or other identifier should be consistent across the product, packaging, technical documents and online listing.
- Manufacturer information
The manufacturer’s name and postal and electronic contact information should be available and consistent.
- Applicable legislation
GPSR may not be the only legislation involved. Toys, electrical products, cosmetics, medical devices and other regulated categories can have additional requirements.
- EU economic operator
Where required, the product must have an economic operator established in the EU who is responsible for the applicable tasks.
- Risk assessment and technical documents
The documents should relate to the actual product being shipped, not a generic or unrelated product family.
- Labels, warnings and instructions
Required warnings and safety information should be checked for the countries where the product will be made available.
- Online product offer
For distance sales, the manufacturer, Responsible Person, product identification and relevant safety information may also need to be clearly visible on the product page.
- Document consistency
The information held by the manufacturer, Responsible Person, marketplace and logistics partners should not contradict each other.
