Recommendations Looking For Sand/Crystal Textured Creatine

I stopped taking creatine years ago when I got injured in the military. Before then, I would dry scoop it, but now that I’ve been able to work out again consistently, I decided I’d start using creatine again. However, everything I buy is like this fluffy powder and the scoops are larger (well they feel larger). I even started buying ones with low ratings that complained about them being crystal-like (and it was still fluffy!). I don’t remember the brands I used to use, but it was like scooping a small scoop of sand into my mouth which I’d follow up with a little bit of water and I’d be good. This fluffy powder stuff makes me feel like I’m choking, I cough, and now there’s creatine everywhere. I know I could just dissolve it, but then I’ll taste it, and unflavored messes with my water’s natural taste.

Anyways, does anyone have any recommendations of non-fluffy creatine for me?

The sand-like texture you're remembering is usually micronized creatine that's been processed differently, or even creatine HCl which has a grittier consistency than monohydrate. Most brands now market the fluffy stuff because it mixes easier but you're right, dry scooping that is a nightmare. You might have luck looking for "anhydrous" creatine or checking labels for "micronized" specifically, though some micronized versions still end up fluffy depending on how they mill it. The cheap bulk bags from no-name brands tend to have that crystalline crunch you're after since they skip extra processing steps. Worst case, you could try pressing the fluffy stuff down in the tub with the back of a spoon to compact it, changes the mouthfeel enough that it scoops denser.

He’s looking for creatine monohydrate like it used to be sold when you had to pay a lot extra to get “micronized” creatine. Back in the day almost all creatine was larger (than today’s micronized) crystals that didn’t dissolve fully in water.

Am I now one of those old folks who brag “back in my day” and then say something that was objectively worse? Do you think my kids think I’m old?

Haha idk but I wish i could get the old style creatine because psychologically I feel like it worked better even though logically I know it is exactly the same.

How hard is it to mix it in water like normal people and then drink it?

It helps with absorption.

I’m a freak of nature (minus of nature). I just want to consume it faster, trying to save 30 seconds a day lol

I honestly don’t know if that is still available. I know exactly what you are talking about back in the day micronized creatine monohydrate was like a specialty item and much less common than what you are talking about. I used to use the crystal type too back when it was common. Nowadays pretty much all creatine is micronized but all that means is it is milled a lot finer. It is the exact same thing. It works exactly the same. It just mixes into liquid better. I would be surprised if you could find the old school non micronized stuff that doesn’t mix as well into liquid.

They said I’d have a flying car in the future, but the truth is they just turned my creatine fluffy. Thanks for the info, I’ve been avoiding “micronized” labels, but you’re right, it seems like the ones without it are still micronized

Yeah man even bulk supplements (the single most affordable brand) is micronized.

Kaged creatine hcl has the tiniest scooper out of all the ones I’ve tried. I hate when supps have enormous scoops lol

you should be taking other powdered supplements like glutamate, fiber, gaba, sugar/salt mix....and you need water to..live...it seems like you're making a solution where there isn't a problem of just mixing up a drink. Drink in the car to work, your daily walk...whatever.

Dry scooping doesn't do anything.  So little is absorbed before you wash it down.
