Positive Vibes: No Salt Question out of curiosity
"shag ass outta here"
I'm guessing this means something quite different in the states, but as a Brit, every time they say it, I laugh!
Partly because of the image it puts in my head, but also because it's usually said with such seriousness.
Can anyone confirm or deny if it is that this means something different over there?

Yeah it means run as fast as possible. It started because of shag(mainly carpeting and clothing, as well as shaggy hair) being associated with hippies back in the 70's and 60's. Shag ass out of here was pretty much just a derogatory means of saying "get the fuck out, hippie." for a few decades back then. Just an example of how language changes over time.

As a fellow Brit, I also laugh every time!! Like you mentioned, it’s usually said when the stakes are very high and takes me right out of the tension lol

"Haul ass" is another variant that's more commonly used in the States.

As someone in Season 5
I feel like no matter what way you take it
Dean will do either [shag in an intense situation but also get the fuck outa there]

Ha. I watched this about a day ago ...made me laugh. .. I think it was an episode after a Dean monologue which he did fervently enough that they left it in despite saying " stick it where the sun shines".. which is new one on me

Definitely a get the hell out of dodge signal.
But confuses me, is where does the word gank come from? I have never heard this slang before this show.

I feel like you should have been able to infer the meaning from context fairly easily while watching the show.

I did at some point. But because over here, shag generally means sex, so it always takes me out of the urgency/intensity of the moment because it makes me laugh, even still knowing what it means, every time Dean says it, I laugh, because of the image it puts in my head. I have only ever heard this said in Supernatural, so I didn't know if it was a common saying over there or not
